1. Mongol ruler Kublai Khan kept 5,000 dogs.
2. Domestic dogs walk in a circle before they lie down, as their wild ancestor would have done, to flatten the ground.
3. A Dalmatian puppy is born completely white. The first spots appear after about three weeks.
4. Greyhounds have been recorded running at 45 mph-that’s nearly twice as fast as top human sprinters.
5. All dogs have a see-through third eyelid that gives their eyes extra protection.
6. Puppies are born blind, deaf, and toothless.
7. A dog’s wet nose traps chemicals in the air, helping it to smell them.
8. Dogs have up to 300 million scent glands in their nose.
9. Dogs have 18 muscles in their ears.
10. Dogs drink water by forming the back of their tongue into a cup to scoop the water up.
11. The tallest breed of dog is the Great Dane. The biggest of all, called Zeus, stood 4 ft from paw to shoulder-as tall as an average five-year-old child.
12. About one-third of all homes in the world have a pet dog. That’s about half a billion doggie homes.
