SPOILERS FOR TOKYO BABYLON. DO NOT READ IF YOU PLAN TO EVER GET INTO TOKYO BABYLON. DO NOT CLICK TO ENLARGE THAT IMAGE. SERIOUSLY DON’T. JUST SCROLL ON BY.

…
Short Tokyo Babylon-related rant rant discussion: So, okay… I totally understand and agree that Subaru and Seishirou have an obsessive relationship. Beginning with the nature of Seishirou’s “bet,” to Subaru’s realization that he’s fallen in love, to the brutal destruction of his trust (accomplished by Seishirou murdering his sister), and finally their semi-ambiguous ending in X, there is nothing about their relationship that isn’t completely obsessive. With this in mind, I understand why, even after Seishirou claims to care nothing for Subaru, their relationship is still viewed as a romantic pairing.
What I do not understand is why anyone actually ‘ships this. How, after the completely unforgivable act of murdering Hokuto, anyone would still actively wish that Subaru and Seishirou could somehow end up together as a couple. That they sort of do (in a “life-long self-destructive universe of two” way, not a “picking out curtains for the house” way), despite Subaru’s best efforts, is undeniable (and heartbreaking, and dark, and a whole bunch of other things that make for really compelling storytelling), but when I see posts that seem to celebrate them as a pairing I am utterly baffled.
I can’t get past Hokuto. I can’t. And I am pretty sure that Subaru’s ongoing self-loathing indicates that he can’t either. The kid hates himself for continuing to obsessively pursue Seishirou while simultaneously convincing himself that it’s just for revenge. This is not a good relationship. It’s gorgeously written and I love that, but I can’t actually love the ‘ship.
Someone, anyone, explain?

The relationship between shipping and fanfic is so much more than a binary choice between "niche ship where it's impossible to find anything" and "popular ship where it's impossible to find anything readable". There's also "niche ship that has thousands of fics because it's captured the imagination of an extremely specific kink subculture that you're not into at all", "popular ship whose writing community became established during an early hiatus and never incorporated any subsequent developments, instead diverging into an alternative canon that's unrecognisable to fans of the actual source material", "moderately well-represented ship where literally everything seems to have been written by a single impossibly prolific author whose grammatical quirks drive you up the wall", etc.

this is just me and the fanfics I have going
minus the "energy" part of course
What's the fic you would write if you had the energy for it? Ambitious, complex, novel-length—the fanfic you'd make if you could.

This was the one tidbit of "lost translations" I was missing, but our wonderful fandom has pulled through.
We love you, Subaru, you've been entertaining us with your terrible ability to communicate for 34(?!) years now.
English Translation
CLAMP News #7: First Place! Exclusive Interview with Sumeragi Subaru - CLAMP Newspaper Character Best Ten
In the CLAMP News #7 issue, October, 1991, it was announced that Subaru Sumeragi had won the top place of the "Character Best Ten", and the prize was a cover shoot and an exclusive interview.
Once upon a time it was translated on LJ by iamsocool12345, but the blog was deleted. So I dug through the internet, found an image, and transcribed the raw text.
My English translation of the "interview" is below:
First place! An Exclusive interview with Sumeragi Subaru CLAMP Newspaper's Best Ten Characters
"Are you really sure you want me receive this award?"
Interviewer: Congratulations on winning 1st place in the "CLAMP Newspaper's Best Ten Characters"!
Subaru: T-thank you very much.
Interviewer: How did you feel when you heard about the award?
Subaru: Um, umm... h-happy. Interviewer: Anything aside from happy?
Subaru: Um, umm... I thought, a-are you really sure you want me to receive this award?
Interviewer: Modest as always! As the Grand Prize 1st place winner of Character Best Ten ranking, you are featured on the magazine cover. How did you feel about the photo shoot?
Subaru: The bouquet of roses was a bit heavy.
Interviewer: Did you choose your clothes?
Subaru: No, it was all Hokuto-chan.
Interviewer: Do you ever buy or style your own clothes?
Subaru: Hokuto-chan always gets them for me.
Interviewer: All right, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you some quite personal questions. What is your favorite food?
Subaru: I'm not too picky, but anything Hokuto-chan makes for me is delicious.
Interviewer: Favorite color?
Subaru: I don't really have a favorite one…
Interviewer: What do you do on your days off from work?
Subaru: Often I will read books.
Interviewer: How is school going?
Subaru: I want to attend school as regularly as possible, but becasue of work, I have frequent absences. Interviewer: Which school are you going to?
Subaru: I attend CLAMP Academy High School with Hokuto-chan.
Interviewer: What subject are you best at?
Subaru: Well, I can't say I'm best at any particular subject…
Interviewer: What is your special skill?
Subaru: Well, I can't say I have any special skills…
Interviewer: Is there anything for you that's, like, "hey, if nothing else I can brag about this one thing"? Subaru: What? No, I wouldn't brag. Interviewer: .........You are so incredibly humble. Subaru: No, not really… Interviewer: Okay, last question. Precisely what is the relationship between you and Sakurazuka Seishirou?! Subaru: He's my neighbor, I guess… Interviewer: Everyone, this was the first place winner of the CLAMP Newspaper's Best Ten Characters, Sumeragi Subaru-kun! He is "very modest" about his "humility," he is "not too picky," and also, he seems to be a "natural airhead".
