why i love platonic heathney so much

most duncney/courtney-centric fics i've read have bridgette as her best friend and i've seen very few where that role is given to heather. as someone who is weirdly obsessed with the idea of a heathney friendship, here's a little ramble about them because that's why i got on this platform in the first place:

i get why bridgette is a good contender for the role of courtney's best friend. cmon, she's literally known for being one of the few td characters everybody can get along with bc she's just really nice and chill overall.

however, i've always felt there was some really interesting potential with heather. if you think about it, courtney and heather are similar in many ways: they're both driven and ambitious, strategic, hot-headed, they like to get shit done, they have a lot of accomplishments behind their back (heather is mentioned to canonically have a ton of awards and trophies and courtney's whole thing is being an overachiever so). not just that, but heather also has family problems and it's widely believed by the fandom that courtney's home life isn't too great either. plus, they both seem to struggle to form actual bonds with other people. in a way, i can see these two connecting on a more personal level than i see courtney connecting with bridgette.

i know you might say "how would that happen if they both clearly don't go out of their way to make friends and have never been buddy-buddy in the show?". well, heather has a few moments of genuine kindness, so she may be a massive bitch 99,99% of the time, but she's not heartless. she was the one comforting courtney after duncan cheated, for no strategic reason. and considering she helped sierra after losing her hair because she has gone through that as well, i'm guessing heather might at times feel compelled to help people who she can relate to. and then there's her being happy with alejandro after they finally get together officially. of course all stars is very unreliable for proper characterization but would it be so odd for heather to crave a deeper connection with someone deep down? especially with someone she can relate to like alejandro?

heather and courtney have more than one way in which they can relate to each other. i think a friendship could be born out of that. i personally imagine that courtney had a really hard time after all starts aired because on online hate, and since no one knows online hate better than heather, that could be the catalyst for the friendship. it would definitely take time and effort for them to be able to open up and trust each other enough, i imagine they would be reluctant to show affection in the beginning, but as time passes they could work through it all and help each other grow as people, whether it's intentional or not. they could both learn to value genuine emotional connections more instead of just chasing praise and acclamation.

basically, even if bridgette is clearly the more obvious and easy pick, i feel like it's mainly because she just gets along with everyone. i'm sure they'd be very different in their dynamic with courtney (bridge would be calmer and more gentle and help court be more in tune with her emotions and work through them while heather would be more blunt and give more practical and rational advice), so ofc people will prefer one over the other. i personally like heathney more bc it's more engaging and compelling to me.

TLDR: i like bridgette as courtney's bestie but i feels like she'd be friends with courtney because she's friends with everyone. heather isn't so obvious but if it happened, it would be more interesting imo.

so i think A LOT about adult duncney and what a duncney reunion would be like in general (btw shameless self plug: i have a duncney reunion fic called lightning strikes twice currently in progress on ao3 and i really like how it's turning out so far so go check it out if you'd like!!) and honestly i think they're one of those couples that could never stick to being friends. like they could try but the tension would be there and eventually it'd snap and they'd do smth that crosses the friendship line. then they'd either have to go no contact again or get back together. they can not stay friends.

COURNWEEK Day 1: Party/On a Date

AU(-ish) that takes place 2 years after TDAS. It’s the 5 year anniversary of Total Drama Island so Chris threw a party for all the old contestants. Out of just sincere good will? Not very likely.

Gwen doesn’t like parties so she didn’t want to come, and Courtney found her work to be much more interesting than this. But because Chris made a fuck load of advertisements for the “TDI Reunion Party, Live on Camera this June 23rd!” Gwen’s mom found out and insisted Gwen should go. Courtney’s boss also found out and decided to give her the day off for it before she was able to refuse, he said it could give them good publicity. So they were both forced to go.

And here we see a pic of two girls totally not enjoying themselves ;D Gwen decided to get some alcohol at the bar to kill time, while Courtney is looking for hidden cameras. That’s the moment Gwen spots Courtney, whom she hasn’t talked to or seen since their fight on TDAS. And, well, what happens after that and if they approach each other or not is all up to your imagination 

(Also! You probably noticed the cute bartender at the left, who is looking suspiciously at her OTP ;0 This cutie is my friend Bailey, who’s birthday is today!! So this is also a gift to her<3 I HOPE YOU HAD A LOVELY BIRTHDAY BOO)

The way ayato was just so in awe and proud of Yui for helping him in solving math problems is SO cute and not talked about enough 😭

And the reason he started studying in the first place was for Yui, and this makes it even MORE cuter I love them so much 😞😞

Courtney drunkenly hooking up with Duncan and spending the night and going to the bathroom in the morning and finding a bunch of press on nails, makeup, yanno girlypop shit and being like on God. oh fuck. and loses sleep for a few days before fully abusing her lawyer resources to track Gwen down and ominously message her to meet up somewhere with no witnesses and Gwen's like sure sounds fun so they go in a shady back alley and then Courtney just starts fuckin sobbing like I'm so sorry I had no idea he had a girlfriend and Gwen's like what. who and Courtney's like your boyfriend Duncan and then Gwen laughs so hard she pukes

“I’m coming with you.” 

Duncan turned around on the steps of the bus. “You’re not coming with me, Princess. Go home.” 

The doors began to close and Duncan went to find a seat. The space between the doors got smaller giving Courtney little time to make a decision. Impulsivity wasn’t a trait she thought she possessed but it must have been what made her wedge her shoulder between the doors and run up the steps. The bus driver gave her an odd look but began driving the vehicle away from the bus stop.

Duncan raised an eyebrow and huffed at Courtney, who stood with her hands on her hips looking determined. “Now what are you gonna do?”

“Uh, I didn’t get that far…” Courtney dropped her arms. Duncan just shook his head at her stubborn nature and looked out the window. The seat slightly dipped with her weight. “Where are we going?”

“We, are not going anywhere.” The bus came to it’s next stop. “You’re getting off.”

Courtney stayed firm in her place.

Duncan whirled on her, his face serious, and his voice tense. “What part of leave don’t you understand? I don’t want you here!”

The bus resumed traveling, the few people who entered gawking at Duncan’s outburst. It was silent between the two teenagers for a while save for Courtney tapping her foot.

“Will you cut that out!” The tapping stopped and Duncan went back to watching the city lights pass through the window.

“So you were just going leave in the middle of the night and not say anything?” Courtney prodded gently, her lowered voice had an edge of concern and Duncan swore she sounded hurt.

“There’s no reason for me to stay. Besides, this town sucks.”  Courtney scoffed at him.

“What about Geoff and Dj? You’re just going to leave your best friends?”

“They’ll be okay.”

Courtney brought up another argument, “Your parents are going to be worried sick when they realize you ran away.”

“I’ll be long gone by then, besides,” Duncan lay his head back against the seat. “they’ll be happier without me.”

“That’s not true.”

“Really? ‘Cause according to my dad I’m ‘incapable of doing anything right and a nuisance to everyone around me.’”

Courtney’s eyes softened and suddenly she understood what brought on this sudden departure. She knew that Duncan didn’t get along with his parents but she didn’t know it had gotten this bad. She rested her hand on his shoulder and he turned his head towards her, his eyes conveying nothing about what was going on through his head.

“You’re not a nuisance.”

Duncan snorted. “You of all people know what a pain in the ass I can be.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t want you around.” A slow smile began to form on Duncan’s mouth and Courtney’s eyes widened.

“Aww Princess, are you trying to say you’re gonna miss me?”

“No!” A blush began to cover her cheeks and spread to the freckles on her nose.

“I didn’t know you cared that much, I’m truly touched.” Duncan continued to cause Courtney’s face to heat up, which she covered with her hands.

“Ugh! Shut up!” Duncan pulled one of her hands away from her face and held it in his, giving Courtney a new reason to blush.

“Okay. I’ll stay.”

“I’m not so sure I want you to anymore.” Courtney said while narrowing her eyes but still held his hand. The bus halted at it’s next stop and Courtney started to get up; a tug on her hand stopped.

“Can we ride along for a little longer?”  It was hard not to give into him when he rubbed his thumb against her hand and looked up at her so vulnerably. She settled back down next to him and her head leaned against his shoulder. The movement of the bus lulled them, both of the their eyes falling closed.

The bus jolted to a halt and Courtney blinked open her eyes and squinted at the bright beams of sunlight.

“All right you two love birds, this is the last stop.” The bus driver yelled back to them. Groggily, she took in the position they were in.

Duncan had his back against the window and sat sideways in the cramped bus seat. At some point she had ended up in his lap, using his duffle bag and her coat as pillows. Some time in the night she must have kicked off her shoes because she was barefoot. Duncan’s head lay against her leg, his breath tickling her thigh. Courtney stretched and checked her watch, panic taking over when she saw the time.

She started so violently Courtney almost kneed Duncan in the face. Duncan adjusted his position and nosed her shoulder.

“Duncan! We have to get up!”

“Five more minutes…” He mumbled into her sweater.

“I’m going to be grounded forever!”

“It’s not so bad, you get used to it, besides,” He snuggled further into her shirt, “wasn’t it worth it to get to spend the whole night sleeping in my lap?”

This time she did knee him as she got off of him and stormed off the bus.

“She loves me.”
