             Ferb raised his eyebrow once more.  This day was filled with surprises and it was only two in the morning. Still, he was grateful for the gesture - even if he intended not to use it. His rebel days were over ( or he hoped they were ) he just needed to fix everything, and usually FERB WAS GOOD AT FIXING.  ❛ I’m hoping I won’t need to as well. Only got a month and a half left in Danville, after all… oh, do you mind if I continue to sleep on your sofa until the morning? I don’t want to walk home right now…  ❜ his parents still hadn’t regained their trust in their son - if he at least stayed here - he would be able to show he was trying to follow the rules.

“Good.” a small smile found it’s way to Candace’s lips, and she unfolded her arms as she added “And feel free, but make sure you call Mom and Dad from the house phone before you go home. Let them know you were here all night, babysitting Amanda.” It was against her nature, but he’d be leaving very, very soon, and she wanted to repair some of the bridges she’d burned.

                       Ferb was shocked ( you couldn’t tell ) but he was. No rant? no comments? then again -he had just told her he would be leaving. He didn’t know whether that was a good or bad sign, but it was appreciated. He could understand if she was happy for his departure. It would mean no more bickering between the two, no more worrying on her part. She deserved a break, and he was trying to make it up to her (but he knew it would likely take the whole summer. ) However, he hoped his stepsister would miss him - even if it was just a little bit. At her question, he offered a simple nod. ❛ Father helped me a lot with my application — mum is still mum, she’d be supportive of any decision and Phineas… has known for awhile… I think he’s coming around to it. I’ll be leaving the end of August…❜ the boy offered a shrug - monotone voice with a hint of concern. Ferb cared for his brother and he hoped he was taking it as well as it seemed. ❛  I shouldn’t have asked Jeremy, not with the way our situation is currently. I was out of line. I’m sorry Candace. ❜ he walked past her and into her corridor, before walking towards the stairs.

“End of August.” she repeated, for no real reason, other than maybe to have it settle into her memory. As Ferb made his way into the hallway, Candace didn’t move from Amanda’s room, but she did let out a groan of “Ferb,” before stepping into the doorway, arms folded across her chest. “Don’t call Jeremy anymore, okay? Call me. Although I hope you won’t need to.”

              ❛ when he picked me up at the party… four hours ago. ❜ Ferbs’ run in with the law had been enough to knock sense into him. He could have lost his right to stay in the US. While he would be attending Camford on Oxbury in September. ( Not that Candace knew that - he hadn’t told her YET. ) he needed to keep his greencard, otherwise he’d never be able to visit them - he didn’t want to be like grandfather and father - only really having contact over video chat. ❛ they let me off… they said it wouldn’t go on my record, but I know I fucked up. trust me.  ❜ Ferb was trying to keep calm because he still had Amanda in his arms. He lowered her into her crib. He then moved so Candace could - if she wished to go and pick her up.  ❛ …but don’t worry - I’ll soon be back home… accepted my place at Camford on Oxbury on Monday. ❜ it felt WEIRD calling England ‘home.’ Danville had become his home, but he needed a fresh start - somewhere a long way away.

Candace inhaled deeply, ready to go off. To go off about why he shouldn’t be asking Jeremy to pick him up. To go off about how reckless he was. To go off about how he could’ve been deported. To go off about how not all of Danville’s law enforcement will be willing to turn a blind eye. But as he told her about returning to England...she  s t o p p e d  . The breath hung in her lungs, and she exhaled. “Oh?” was all she was able to get out at first. Her eyes were fixated on Amanda, quietly slumbering in her crib. There was no need to pick her up now. She was already asleep. Looking back up to her stepbrother, she questioned “Does Phineas now already? Mom and Dad?” She couldn’t bring herself to say she would miss him, but she dropped the need to bust, and she hoped that was enough.

              When he saw the bat, he brought the baby girl close to him, lowering her so she wouldn’t be impacted. When he heard Candace’s voice, he straightened up.  Ferb cringed as she used his FULL NAME - no one called him Ferbs - well, his parents when they were angry, which was becoming more and more common. He blinked at her and looked down, focusing on the baby in his arms. ( you say that a lot ) was what he was thinking. ❛ Jeremy said I was could stay here tonight, I was awake - was at a party - no drinking, I wouldn’t have touched Amanda if I had… I thought you could use some sleep… ❜ Ferb held Amanda close still, his hand still protectively placed around her head.  ❛ you can continue to ostracise me in the morning. ❜ he said in his typical monotone - but he clearly was slightly hurt by her comment the other week.

Her arms folded across her chest, Candace questioned “and just when did you and Jeremy have this conversation, hmm?” 

While his last comment stung, Candace didn’t budge. Ferb made his bed, now he had to lay in it. “You know why I don’t want you around.” she stated plainly. “You need to clean up your act. I had to bail you out of prison. You have a criminal record now.”

Despite all of her words, she made no effort to reach for Amanda. She was comfortable leaving her daughter in her brother’s hands. For now.
