There’s a question in my inbox right now about ‘my boyfriend’, and while I’ll get to that later, the boyfriend verbiage reminded me very pressingly of one of my favorite things:

One time a couple years back, the coolest woman I’ve ever met in my life came up to me in a bar and asked me if Maxime was my girlfriend. When I laughed and said no, apparently what she heard was less ‘nah, that’s my boyfriend’ (because I’m a big dumb idiot who didn’t clarify) and more ‘nah, she’s single and ready to mingle’.

And that’s the story of how our now-resident Jun once bought Maxime a drink because she thought he was, in fact, a handsomely reserved, interesting-faced, butch-for-butch old dyke like her 😌

I've been taking a lot of buses visiting a friend in sweaty heat, so this is slightly inspired off of that-

Ahaha, well, about that 'unknowingly' part... Shepard actually shares a lot of traits and tendencies with a particular brand of villainous or otherwise not-strictly-above-board character, and some of those traits/tendencies revolve essentially upon the axis of being generally very quick to [a] develop an idea of how to talk to people in order to ultimately make them act in the ways he wants, [b] intuit what the fault lines/pressure points in people’s personas are apt to be, and [c] have a self-satisfied impulse to wind people up and bat them around a bit just to revel in the fact that he can, even if he usually doesn’t follow said impulse through. (Or at least keeps it harmless and declawed…)

In sum, Shepard doesn’t know the extent of it or the reasons or anything, but he does have the idea already that Arjun wants his validation, and is absolutely taking a certain ego-affirming amusement in giving it to him. At the same time though, Shepard is very much tempered by a liking for being seen as competent and in control of his life and surroundings, and, to him, one part of ‘competence’ is having the ability to pass along your own tools and learnings to others so that they can get value out of them as well. So, he enjoys that Arjun wants his validation, yes; but at the same time he’s the kind of person to be like, ‘you’re right, I am cool and worth looking up to — let me reward your sensible taste by passing on some things you can actually put to use, if you’re not a complete lost cause.’

TLDR; Shepard is kind of like if Scar from The Lion King wasn’t particularly interested in fratricide and was just kind of serving butch-adjacent cunt on the periphery all the time while advising Simba to get a sick leather jacket, quit vaping (smoke clove cigarettes instead if you’re gonna do that shit at all, kid; still bad for you but at least it’s stylish), and try shaving his mane off for awhile if he’s curious about it because nothing is permanent and more importantly who even cares anyway.))
