All of this used to be split up into like 5 different guides! Everything’s been trimmed and compiled into a single post for your convenience. Enoy!<3

You kids with your City Leaf and your New Folk. Back in my day, we couldn’t choose where to put our house. We had to pick between four different roof colors. And there was no being Mayor or barista jobs. Blathers couldn’t identify fossils, we had to send it off to some mysterious mueseum and wait for three days to get it back.
And we were grateful for it.

I read a guide on here on how to do this.. but I can’t find it so here’s how I do it, kinda following that guide.
Here’s what I’m starting with. Take your screenshot, and enlarge it to 1200px, make sure you have “bicubic (smooth gradients)” selected when resizing. This will help when you put your image back to it’s regular size.
Next, filter > noise > reduce noise. These are the settings I used for this particular picture, but it depends on the picture. Press ok, then go to image > image size again and shrink it down to whatever size you’d like. I usually do 540px.
Now, if this is too fuzzy for your liking, you can either sharpen it using filter > sharpen > sharpen, or the method I recommend:
create a new layer and press crtl+shift+alt+e.
fliter > other > high pass > radius: .5 pixels (this will look weird. don’t worry!) press ok
set that layer to overlay, and change the opacity to your liking. if that’s not sharp enough for you, just change the radius of the high pass. don’t go too crazy with that though, it can look pretty bad if you overdo it.
As for coloring and editing, I mostly use curves. You can find some nice curve presets you can use here and here. Remember you can play with opacity and blending modes with these.
And you’re finished! Remember to have fun and be creative with it.

Unfortunately I’ve been playing almost entirely at night lately, so all my photos are aesthetically blue. But I’ve been doing some town decorating! A cute apple tree grove by the station, and tulips around my cafe (thanks mayorsage for mentioning planting tulips by the cafe months ago and getting the idea into my head)
