NICO’S  SMOKE  PUFFS  IN  WISPS  out  the  open  windows  like  tendrils  snaking  toward  the  late-evening  sky,  the  van--blinking  blue  neon,  devil  may  cry,  a  fine  mobile  outlet  if  he’d  dare  say  so  himself--skittering  to  a  violent  dime  stop.  there’s  a  mutter  of  outrage  from  within  the  white  walls  before  the  side  door  jars  open  like  a  welcoming  shutter,  and  nero  leans  out  of  the  plush  of  the interior,  gripping  the  frame  in  a  vice.  that  red  clad  figure  is  all  too  familiar  to  the  younger  devil  hunter,  who  cocks  a  grin,  dimpled  and  sweet.  he  wouldn’t  say  it,  not  here,  but  he  was  happy. 

happy  to  see  him.  happy  he  was  alive.  he  doesn’t  ask  where  vergil  is--he  doesn’t  think  he’d  see  dante  if  he  wasn’t  healthy  and  well.  nero  extends  his  human  hand,  wiggling  organic  fingers,  the  silhouette  of  the  buster  arm  burned  into  the  door  frame.

also, just like, as a note, there was never any problem with nero being trans, and whether or not discrimination exists in the dmc universe in this regard, he did not experience it. he was raised into a loving family--even if the orphanage was a partition of the order of the sword, it was still well funded and made him feel like he had some kind of family--and the moment he began to express gender dysphoria, which i feel was very very young, he was accepted for what he was, which was a boy. i feel like nero is either his birth name (as its said it was chosen after the cloth he was wrapped in, which was black), or the name he chose after learning a little more about the circumstance of his appearance at the orphanage. nero did not go on puberty blockers, but i do think he started hrt pretty young, so he’s very male-passing and identifies 100 percent wholly as male.

okay so some headcanons: 

the order is indoctrinating. nero was shilled their beliefs practically from birth, since he was taken in by credo and kyrie’s family.

presumably, credo and kyrie’s family ran the orphanage that nero was left at--this makes sense to me and is at least partially backed by pre-series canon and by kyrie’s involvement with children in dmc4. nero also mentions in dmc5 that theres a sense of shock from feeling like he has no one to gaining a family overnight.  this orphanage was ran by the order of the sword, and while it genuinely did foster children who were raised by nuns (or the equivalent) and songstresses, it was also a place of order-candidates. if a child was fitting enough, they could be introduced to sects of the order--for nero, that was the guard and security sect. he started training as young as twelve. 

while nero never really believed in the order or what they believed, he did find comfort in the feeling of unity and having friends, camradarie, over the same shared ideals. his loyalty is to people, and much less to religions or groups; as he got older, he very quickly become disillusioned with the order overall, and started to rebel--refusing to wear the uniform, at the bottom of the wrung. 

nero has always felt a bit different. he could never chalk this up to demonism. 

he is 1/4th demon, 3/4ths human. he loves his humanity and was conflicted about his demonism for a very long time, but comes to accept it by the end of dmc5, granting him a full, genuine devil trigger. his natural form, while taking practice to achieve, would appear mostly human with certain bizarre qualities. 

nero didn’t really ‘regrow an arm’, i think the power of his will simply recreated the spiritual form of his demon arm and supplanted it where he perceives it is supposed to go. the human arm is more of an illusion--it might feel real to the touch, but it doesnt exist, and is a projection. this is what allows him to destroy the illusion in order to use nico’s breakers, or his natural spiritual arm. he is still disabled. 

his mother is a japanese woman, and his father is white.

i’ll have to sit down and give the little man a sketch sometimes, but my nero is pretty close to canon compliant in terms of appearance--but he is biracial and visibly so. his eyes are darker than canon and silvery, and he has demi or tapered eyelids--double lids that recede into single lids / where you can only visually see part of the lid. his skin is also a little darker and not the same shade as in canon. otherwise he looks 99 percent the same, maybe he lets his hair grow out post dmc5 again.

AND  JUST  AS  BRUSQUELY,  nero  returns  that  stare,  hands  going  to  his  hips,  head  tilted  to  account  for  the  height  disparity.  if  theres  any  well  of  fear  in  that  pulsing  heart  of  his,  he  expresses  not  a  mite  of  it,  his  features  contorted  in  a  half-scowl,  amusement  in  the  girth  of  his  eyes.   ‘  this  any  way  to  say  hello?  what  d’you  want?  ‘

(nero sparda, if you go by the fanon way of naming the descendants of sparda.) pronunciation.   nee-roh. nicknames.  n,  the young devil hunter, sugoude no debiru hantā.  height. 5 ft. 10. age. between 16 and 18 in dmc4, and between 22-24 in dmc5.  zodiac. aries or gemini. not sure which. languages.  english, probably latin, possibly italian (?), a little japanese. 

physical characteristics.

hair colour.  white.  eye colour. silver.  skin tone.  fairish, but not pale. soft tones of light brown. body type.  fit, athletic. medium shoulder, small waist. lean thighs, hips, and arms. a little bit spindly, but not underweight or without a strong build. accent.  none.  dominant hand.  both, but favors right. posture.  good, but he’s prone to slouching when seated. scars.  minimal.  tattoos.  none, though i think when his wings recede back into his human form, they etch upon his back like tattoos.  most noticeable features.   white hair and sharp look tends to get the attention of strangers. he has a particular way of carrying himself as well. oh, and the demon arm, or lack of arm.
