[ENG] 一剑霜寒 A Sword of Frost by 语笑阑珊 | Translations Masterpost
Note: Hi guys, this is the masterpost for translated 一剑霜寒 translations! I will be trying to translate in full, maybe one chapter a week I don’t know because y’all know how much life and laziness gets in the way for me but this is honestly my fave novel and I have not seen any lasting translations for this so far + I’ve gotten some requests on my main blog, so here it is.
Translations: Translations are entirely mine, some phrases might be edited based on my own interpretation. I’ll try to explain some of the idioms/metaphors etc. at the end of each chapter. As with most historical setting novels, the terms used may be a bit difficult and I struggle a little, but we’ll see XD If there are any historical notes I’ll put them in but I’m not an expert as well, so do take my interpretations with a pinch of salt!

Official Summary
Prince Xiao, Ji Yan Ran, is highly skilled in martial arts, well-learned and unconventional in his ways - this is what the country’s people are talking about. He is of royal blood and the person he will marry in the future must be one who is well-versed on all fronts, including musical instruments, strategic games, knowledge, art and even cooking. The regular folk cannot even begin to be envious of his future match.
Within Prince Xiao’s Manor - On this day, Ji Yan Ran has a cold and is stuck in bed. Yun Yi Feng personally cooks; taking the rice, cleaning the vegetables and making chicken soup.
After a moment, His Highness Prince Xiao rushes over even though he is ill, and asks in a concerned tone despite how dizzy he is, “The servants say you’re performing witchcraft in the kitchen, who are you trying to kill this time Yun Er?”

Introduction - Characters | Cases Outline | Original Novel Source + Other Materials & Links
*Please read the introduction which is actually my full rec post with greater summaries and details of this novel. I’ve also outlined the main two characters in this, and all the links you’ll need everywhere. It’s a TINY bit spoiler-y but nothing of importance, but this is also not really necessary to read if you wanna be surprised!

I just want to go up into the mountains and paint and write poetry and Think Thoughts and avoid politics and worldly affairs and play instruments and make medicines and tend to my garden and my adopted/domesticated wild animals with my group of close scholarly friends of extremely varying personalities, backgrounds, and work ethics and my Teacher Who I Look Up To More Than Anyone Else In The World and live in seclusion on the mountain together and discuss Things and debate comfortably back and forth all day long without actually trying to go anywhere or say anything, just to pass the time and enjoy the Thoughts, and paint pictures of the garden and the plants and the animals and the mountains and the signs of civilization that can vaguely be seen far away below the peak and write long-winded free flowing essays on Things and Stuff about life and people and goodness and love and war and joy and write poetry in pretty handwriting on the margins of paintings and books and scraps of paper and fabric about Anything and Everything and we'll write our own personal histories and laugh mischievously as we add in absolutely ridiculous, exaggerated, Not At All True stories about ourselves that are just real enough that it's hard to tell if it's made up or not, knowing that future generations will have no way of knowing if it's real or fake and will just have to figure it out themselves and we'll sing songs and write plays and put them on for ourselves and laugh late into the night and we'll rest under the flower blossoms in the spring together and look out at the crisp snow in the winter together and brush away the dry leaves in the fall together and lazily bathe in the warm morning sun in the summer together and get scolded lovingly by our Beloved Teacher for being lazy even when said teacher is being lazy with us and we'll watch the stars every night that we can see them and take note of their positions and their shapes and the stories we know about them and we'll paint the clouds on stormy days and listen to the rain on the roof and on the stones outside and on the leaves of the trees and watch how the raindrops bounce off the hard stone surfaces and drip from the down-turned leaves and pool in the centers of flowers and sit on the silvery strands of spider webs and we'll record our lives and our learnings and our recipes and our songs and our stories and our ideas and our Thoughts and we'll laughingly, carelessly discuss lighthearted topics and seriously, thoughtfully debate heavy topics of time and one day I or someone else on the mountain will write something controversial that is deemed unsavory and improper and dangerous and wrong by worldly people and it will somehow accidentally spread down out of the mountain and it will be found by someone in power and they will become furious or fearful over it and we'll all be burned or buried alive with our books and our paintings and our poems and our stories and our good handwriting in our mountain for no one to hear from or about again, except for the little servant who we took in as a very young child who we sent away before we were killed who will spread our stories and our ideas and our memories for us and we'll all die together proudly with our friendship and our love and our enlightenment knowing that we had at least one joyful period of time in our lives on the mountain and someone somewhere in the world will remember us in the stories of their grandparent who ran away from the mountain or the stories of the shopkeeper down the street who heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone else's cousin's uncle-in-law that there was a group of people who lived on the mountain over there who painted and wrote and Thought and laughed and lived together and died together and supposedly learned an incredible secret about life that no one exactly knows and our memory will continue to spread via rumor and tall tale until not a soul knows if it's true or false.
