July 2009 - The Split
On July 6th 2009, Panic! At The Disco posted something that would forever change the course of the band. It was a statement from their guitarist (Ryan Ross) and their bassist (Jon Walker) stating that they would be departing from the band.
Statement shown below:
“Ryan Ross and Jon Walker will be leaving Panic at the Disco to embark on a musical excursion of their own. Though the four of us have made music together in the past, we’ve creatively evolved in different directions which has compromised what each of us want to personally achieve. Over the years, we have remained close and honest with each other, which helped us to realize that our goals were different and that parting ways is truly what is best for each of us. We are all excited for the future, you should be too. -Ryan & Jon”
In many, many interviews, Spencer and Brendon were asked what caused the split, why did they split, etc.
Here is one of the many times they have answered this question (it was almost asked as much as why they dropped the exclamation point from the band's name in 2008, which is saying something):
“Well basically, you know, the four of us (the original members) were just you know talking and we kinda decided that we were all headed different directions musically. So, Ryan and Jon decided to, you know, do their own new musical, you know, adventure, excursion as they would say. And yeah, it's actually kind of great. It didn't end on any bad terms at all. So we kinda lucked out on that.”
From their Pop Show Fuse Tv interview in 2009
After the announcement, several members from the band (current and former) posted on Twitter.
Here is a quote talking about those posts from a Guardian article in 2009
Smith acknowledged the break-up with a Twitter post. "Every little thing is gonna be alright," he wrote, accompanied by a photograph from the studio. His former bandmates were a little less upbeat. Ross posted a link to the Beatles' I'm So Tired, while Walker quoted Kurt Vonnegut, "So it goes" – later complemented with another Beatles lyric: "Life goes on within you or without you."
I couldn't find the posts, sadly. They are probably out there somewhere though, so if you have found them please let me know.
During this time Panic! had a tour scheduled with blink-182, and they stated that they would still be going through with said tour.

Just saw a video of a person bragging about successfully stalking ryan rosses family on Facebook and friending his mom and step brother, I'm just gonna say this
You're disgusting, you're disgusting if you do this and think it's okay.
He's not on his socials anymore, this is why he left. Why the fuck are we trying to normalize STALKING celebrities families and finding them on Facebook (or any other socials). Give him his privacy stop being a fucking freak and doing this?? Especially if you go as far as to TEXT his mom and say "I was just checking to make sure he's okay",, that's still not and will never be a good reason to stalk his family. Like?? Have we lost all basic respect?? 😃

So, once again, I am seeing someone try to rewrite Panic history making Brendon look like an “evil villain.” Please just stop. You are putting your misinformed and misinterpretation out there as fact when it is well known how events happened. It’s also extremely weird to do that. The band is dead. Let it go.
Brendon did not kick Spencer out of the band. Spencer had a serious drug addiction problem and left to get clean. He and Brendon have remained best friends through all of it and continue to be today.

And to add to my last post, here is Brendon talking about Spencer. When Brendon was streaming on Twitch, Spencer called him. He has said they talk all the time. Their wives are close friends. Video credit to: I did it again on YT.

For me, it's not that I find everything they do as loving friends inherently romantic, it's just that the writers make it difficult to see a connection that rivals theirs anywhere else because all the "romances" are so underdeveloped. And it doesn't help that they keep throwing in little comparative remarks to explicitly romantic things. Like, "sounds like we're getting married," and "you're not going to kiss me," or "Yeah, you're just a guy, right? A really, really good looking guy." Of course, these moments could happen in an entirely platonic relationship, but this is a tv show where each moment is carefully written with the intention to communicate a something. And I think the writers were going for, 'Wow, look how deep their friendship is!!!' but comparing their relationship to romantic ones is just a bit confusing, you see? Or at least, I'm pretty sure that's what the writers were trying to say, but they're not making it easy for me to understand what I just watched solely in the context of the show. Maybe they explained at some point at a convention or in a tweet how rhe audience us meant to interpret Matt and Foggy's relationship as depicted on screen, but that's besides my point. Art is a figurative form of communication. So if an artist has to explain (communincate) what their figurative form of communication was communicating, then their art partially failed at being art.
By the way, please don't take this as any kind of criticism of you. I agree with your opinion! I just want to explain my perspective, and criticize the art, the tv show, for it's underdeveloped romances with any of the "love interests", and the unhelpful addition of romantic connatations between the two lead male characters. It's misleading, and more importantly, lazy.
i feel like even if you're a 100% mattfoggy truther like fully believe it should be canon it really rubs me the wrong way when people attribute everything matt and foggy do together and friendly or close as relating to a romantic relationship. like that's so alloromantic of you and i feel like foggy and matt's more intimate relationship would be entirely way more complex than that. like their friendship would come first over everything. we've long established that they're the type to still be best friends after a breakup and i think that's a trait that just doesn't exist without significant context within the rest of their relationship

So, Brendon Urie and Ryan Ross were still talking to each other from 2010 to 2012.
I've been going back and forth on posting this on tumblr of all places, but fuck it, we need to talk about Brendon and Ryan's actual twitter interactions from 2010 to 2012. AKA: My Christmas Present to you all.
So, there was a blog (that I don't think is running anymore) from the late-2010s and I remember them saying in passing that Brendon and Ryan's friendship "fractured around 2010". This was a big blog for Ryan content at the time, and I am not the only person who has had some issues with how this blog has... Delivered information.
And I'm not linking the post they said it in, because the post in general doesn't matter in this context and it's still a decent post on the topic they were talking about regardless, but that sentence really did annoy me.
Because I became a fan of PATD in 2011, and... Saying their friendship "fractured around 2010" is just not true. After about a year of not interacting on twitter (due to PATD recording Vices & Virtues, TYV promoting Take A Vacation! and then touring, and both bands being annoyed at each other for a few months), August 2010 was when Ryan and Brendon would start interacting on twitter again and also in person...
First sign of contact: 27th August 2010 "Small world" - Shane (a seemingly candid picture also taken by Shane Valdez)
Then this happened on 26th October 2010.
(cite 1 and cite 2)
November 2010, the Uries adopted Penny Lane in January 2010. This must've been her actual birthday. Ryan obviously thought she was cute.
Brendon replied with this.
And Ryan replied with this.
I think both were a little bit high.
A conversation that happened on 26th-27th May 2011 (like, damn, dude it's such a "fractured" friendship)
Brendon tweeting on Ryan's Birthday in 2011, and Ryan replying to the post.
In January 2012, Brendon said he hadn't talked to Ryan and Jon in about two months in the Definitely Funny interview. Well, that seemed to have changed by February.
Then there was this little thread from 2012 (ft. Jon). This was coming to around the end of Vices & Virtues tour before they would go to record Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!, so it makes sense that Brendon would start using his Twitter more. Also, I love that he tagged Dan in this as well.
This conversation:
On August 19th Spencer, Brendon, Shane, Sarah, and Linda went to the Breaking Bad Art Gallery. I think this was Shane posting about it, and Ryan saying he was willing to join since he was just across the street at the time. I didn't see any photos of Ryan if he managed to make it there on time though.
The Shane (Brendon's ex-roommate, and now ex-best friend) and Ryan interactions are actually quite interesting, because it gives us an indication when Brendon, Shane, and Ryan started talking to each other again. Shane's twitter's private now (so I'm not always able to supply context), but we can see that Ryan commented on Shane's post on Twitter 21st March 2010. First time he would've replied to Shane's posts since July 2009.
Brendon retweeting Ryan's tweets. Twice.
All of this stuff is still up on twitter. They aren't hard to find.
Just know, this is why I find it hilarious but also annoying whenever certain fans say in a serious tone (not in a joking or a shitposting way) that Ryan and Brendon's friendship was "fractured" or that "they hated each other", as if they parted ways after 2009 and never spoke to each other again until they bumped into each other at the 2015 Halloween Party.
Because that's very clearly not what happened.
They were both talking to each other in late-2010. In fact, it seemed like Ryan and Brendon were making the most effort out of everyone in the pre-split band to remain in contact. It's not like it was some kind of secret either. Brendon was talking about it in interviews as well.
Are you still friends with Ryan Ross and Jon Walker? I'm definitely glad to say that, yes, we are still friends. I talked to Ryan a couple days ago. We live close to each other and we've hung out a few times — gone to dinner, grabbed some drinks. We told each other we'd get together again soon. - SPIN (this question was asked in late January 2011)
And this quote is very much in line with everything to do with the tweets.
This post isn't a "Fuck you, for misleading fans" kind of post to that blog, but a "this is a mistake anyone can make" kind of post (which is why I also haven't tagged them or their post), especially when this fandom has been playing a collective game of telephone since 2011, and people in this fandom just have a habit of either never citing their sources about what the band has said, or a habit of making shit up about Brendon since 2005! It also just doesn't help when people take any sign of friendship between these two guys, and turn it into a relationship for entertainment purposes or conspiracy theory BS. I understand why stuff like this happens!
But please check your facts before you say something like their friendship "fractured around 2010" so confidently.
Especially, when - as we can see from 2010-2012 - Ryan and Brendon seemed to be the the only two members from PATD and TYV to actually make something of an effort to meet up and talk to each other. Spencer and Jon? Not really. We might have had the odd mention, but Brendon was always the one talking to Ryan, meeting up with Ryan, and they lived relatively close by to each other!
Because if you actually talk to any Ryden shippers (or people who even just loved their dynamic) from around 2010-2012, people will tell you that no one theorised about whether Brendon's valley girl voice during 'Nearly Witches' was an impression of Ryan at that time. In fact, most were talking about how great it was that they were talking and meeting up!
I know that people were making a big deal out of Brendon not following Ryan back at the time, and that they still do now, but does it really matter when the two were still talking and interacting with each other? I guess no one will ever be happy.
I'm not saying that Ryan and Brendon were besties around this time, but I'm also not saying that people who hate each other don't tend to meet up for drinks and talk to each over like twitter mutuals.

I think that plotline was specifically to show how much Matt declined. It's supposed to be terrible. Normally, Matt cares too much, often with dire consequences. He’s poor because he couldn’t work a soulless corporate job. He becomes reckless and his morals waver when Elena Cardenas is killed. He risks his and his friends’ safety and careers because he can’t be a bystander to the pain he overhears every night. As a result of attempting to juggle too much, because he cares too much, his compartmentalized double lives unravel, in addition to his inevitable mental burn out. Season 3 Matt doesn’t care. He doesn’t believe in love or a triumphant good anymore, he can’t. His empathetic, kind, caring nature is cold and dead with his relationships and Faith in God. Season 1 Matt would never be so callous, which, ironically, causes Season 3 Matt to become so burnt out and uncharacteristically awful.
On that note, I really hate how the season ended like, “And through the power of friendship he believes in good again! He’s not suicidal or experiencing hallucinations anymore! Or grieving Father Lantom, Stick, Elektra, or even recent acquaintance Ray Nadeem. Or reconciling that a biological parent who didn’t want him was actually around in his life the whole time! Foggy definitely trusts Matt to not make the same mistakes based on nothing! No one needs to discuss the insane, awful things Matt did this season, and he definitely doesn't need therapy! No, really, these things don’t need to be addressed because he’s fine now!" Season 3 was so good, but also unresolved. It's like 75% of a finished story.
imo the worst thing matt ever did in the show was that shit with melvin in season 3. homie talking about how "he made his choice" BESTIE MELVIN TOLD YOU HE BURNED DOWN HIS WORKSHOP AND FISK BUILT HIM A NEW ONE!! melvin's ass did NOT want to cooperate. unless I straight up missed something smh matt was being a little bitch for leaving melvin there to die AND think it was justified.
narrative wise though this fucks because I always thought melvin and/or betsy was doomed ever since matt promised to protect them. I mean to be fair I'm pretty sure his promise to melvin was to protect BETSY and in s3 he did go warn her. lovely cinema when betsy told matt that melvin had considered him a hero. MWAH! matt I have beef with your actions but they are so fun to analyze <3

uhh... I might have an addiction
reblog and put in the tags how many bookmarks you have on ao3 and what rating/category/ship/fandom/additional/character tag dominates the most of it.
