When I was training to be a battered women’s advocate, my supervisor said something that really blew my mind:

“You can always assume one thing about your clients; and that is that they are doing their best. Always assume everyone is doing their best. And if they’re having a day where their best just isn’t that great, or their best doesn’t look like your best, you have to be okay with that.”

Any now whenever anyone in my life, either a friend or a client, frustrates me, disappoints me, or pisses me off, I just tell myself They are doing their best. Their best isn’t that great today, but I have days where my best isn’t that great either.

Just last night actually I was talking to engaged couples about how the Bible says you’re supposed to leave your father and mother and cleave to your spouse.

A lot of people take that verse to mean leave their home, stop relying on them financially, etc. Which is true. But it *also* means to leave their mentality.

If you know your parents didn’t do marriage right leave their mentality because it will poison your own marriage.

I do not have to do things the way my mother did them. I do not need to practice the relational patterns I witnessed growing up. I do not need to approach my marriage with one foot out the door.

We will take the good from our parents and throw out the bad because we’re our own family unit now and we are gonna learn from their mistakes, not replicate them.

My wife and I were cooking dinner together and when we sat down to eat she said, “You know what I like about you?” and so I obviously asked her what and she was like “With you, every night feels like Friday,” and it was so fucking cute. Why is she so nice to me.
