Notes about trying to use clip studio ex as a former photoshop user under the fold.

Disclaimer: I used clip studio pro, not the full ex version. The good: The changes they made to the brush system in the last patch make it possible to come reasonably close to photoshop’s simple opacity variation brushes.

The bad: Clip seems lacking when facing complex text arrangement. Applying layer effects is very limited, and you can’t bend text along a path as in PS. Instead you have to rasterize it and then warp it, losing the ability to edit it. This might be due to manga artists preferring to draw out the symbols for sounds, I’m not sure.

The ugly: Once you move out of painting and into text balloons or fonts it can unclear why stuff happens, such as why I can no longer move a piece of text once I’ve applied a layer style to it until I rasterize it. Speech bubbles are similarly hard to understand, as they seem to like to mysteriously group together on layers I didn’t tell them to.

Overall, the amount of rasterization you have to do when working with objects can make clip feel like gimp with a slightly better interface.
