Victim =/= good person. Yes, good people can be victims but victims aren’t automatically in the right. Eric and Dylan were victims of suicide, bullying, and mental health issues. They should still be held accountable for the shooting. I think you are misusing the term victim, op.

Guide to Surviving a School Shooting

(Taken from sources online and survivors of such tragic events!)

- First sign of an active shooter and you’re in a classroom: lock the door, turn off the lights, get as far away from the door as possible, use any object available to cover your body/head. Turn the desks sideways and use them as a barricade. Books. Filing cabinets. Shelves.

- If you’re hiding in a classroom and you hear someone say “POLICE! OPEN UP.” Do not open that door! Shooters often impersonate the police in order to get people to open the door.

- If you find yourself outside when the shooting takes place: run to the nearest road/shop/establishment while calling authorities.

- If you’ve found a hiding place, turn your phone on silent/‘do not disturb’

- Avoid videoing the shooting. This gives you tunnel-vision and may take you out of survival mode!

- Know your exit strategy: Make sure you know where your exits are and RUN.

- FIGHT. If unable to run or hide, and you come face to face with the shooter. Fight! John Bruner, a 20-year law-enforcement veteran who is the former Chief County Detective with the Greene County (Pa.) District Attorney’s Office.. “you have to fight for your life,” Scissors, hot coffee, the coffee carafe, other glass objects from an office pantry, for example. Fire extinguishers, either engaged or as a weapon to inflict blunt force trauma, are good. Books, Chairs, Shoes, FISTS.

- He also states, ”Most people who are shot by a gun survive. So understand that and cling to that. Just keep fighting. … You want to buy time. You want to distract this person, because it’s going to take police three or four minutes to get there.“

- If you’re running away from the shooter, run in a Zig-Zag!! This lessens the chances of getting shot in areas that may be fatal. The fatal areas are the torso, head and back: if you can, use your hands to cover these areas.

- If you find yourself in the hallway and the shooter is firing their gun (if you can’t run), play dead! Make sure your body is facing down so you can breathe/blink without fear of doing so. It is more likely than not that they won’t shoot you as they want to preserve their bullets.

- If you see/ hear anything, report it! Action is key in a school shooting, time is precious. The first sign of something “not quite right” report it and call authorities.

* these are obviously tips and some guidance. In the actual moment of a shooting, trauma and fear set in and actions become unpredictable *

How To (properly) Visit The Columbine Memorial

SO, you’re thinking about making a trip to the Columbine memorial? That’s great! Here are just a few tips (from a local and from someone who isn’t deficient in empathy) on how to make the most out of your visit. 👍

Dress Appropriately. I chose to wear my favorite black dress and feather belt. please leave your natural selection, wrath, AOL Here KewLz HaXORz ArE shirts, trench coats, or other Columbine Killer Costumes at home. Those clothes just scream, “I’ve never been laid and won’t ever move outta my mom’s basement” Save em for Halloween plz. 

AH! we’ve made it to Clement Park! There’s parking right off of Bowles Ave. Just pull in by the Library. It’s super easy to spot. 

You can bring flowers if you’d like! I opted for yellow roses. I would suggest leaving any candles you want to light for eric and dylan at home. You can worship those pasty losers anywhere else in the ENTIRE WORLD besides the COUPLE OF SQUARE FEET THAT IS THE MEMORIAL. (show some self control)

take a second to glance at the posted rules. If you don’t speak english (only reason i can come up with for not understanding them) there is a great new website called google.com. You can go there and translate any word you don’t know. Like: no smoking, no fumar, 喫煙禁止, ne pas fumer, Vietato fumare,

WE’RE HERE!! No finger guns, water guns, or mock weapons within the memorial grounds. i’m not trying to TELL you what to do per se, just want to make sure you have the best experience, and mock shooting something makes you look infantile. Now you can take in the tranquility of the memorial. 

In case nature calls during your visit, don’t fret! There are plenty of places to relieve yourself besides Rachel’s placard. There are many facilities within clement park. Just turn around, stroll out of the memorial grounds, and head for these plastic blue houses, you can’t miss it. 😃

if ya see someone desecrating the memorial, just flag down one of these guys, police are constantly patroling Clement Park. If none are around, call this number: 303-794-1551. That’s the Littleton Police Department. I would suggest not to ask if they’ll release the Basement Tapes. I have a hunch they’re gonna say no. (sorry guys)

GREAT JOB! YOU DID IT! You get a gold star. We managed to visit the memorial and keep our dignity in tact! Feel free to stroll by the school, all I ask is to leave those attending alone and to stay respectful to the area. Colorado thanks you.  Saying shit like, no one remembers or cares anymore is SUCH A COP OUT. Anyone with a heart cares. Colorado cares. So many people were somber, visiting the memorial alongside me. I care and I will never EVER forget the THIRTEEN VICTIMS of the Columbine Massacre.

Jeffrey Franklin grins from the back seat of a Huntsville, Alabama, police car after being taken into custody March 10, 1998. The teenager wielding an ax, a sledgehammer and a butcher’s knife killed his parents and critically wounded three of his four younger siblings.

Aileen Wuornos experienced a traumatic and unsettling childhood. She was born Aileen Carol Pittman February 29, 1956 in Rochester, Michigan to Diane, who was aged 14, and Leo Pittman. Aileen never actually met her father as he was incarcerated at the time of her birth and ended up committing suicide in prison in 1969. The lack of a relationship with her father was a sore point for her and she would mention this various times throughout her life. Aileen began engaging in sexual activities with classmates at school from the early age of 11 in exchange for various items such as cigarettes, candy or money. She also had sex with her brother. Allegedly, Aileen claims to have been raped by her grandfather at a young age who, she also said, would beat her and force her to strip naked. At age 14, Aileen became pregnant after being raped by a family friend and she eventually gave the baby up for adoption. She would soon take up prostitution as a way to support herself after disengaging with her family.

Aptly nicknamed the “Soap maker of Correggio,” Leonarda Cianciulli was an Italian serial killer in operation between 1939 and 1940.

Leonarda suffered many hardships as a young woman, from several miscarriages and deaths of her babies to suicide attempts. Following each tragedy, she thought back to something a fortune teller had warned her as a teenager: “You will marry and have children, but all your children will die.” Due to the constant heartache from losing child after child, Leonarda became increasingly protective of her surviving children. As WWII was looming, Leonarda’s oldest son decided he would join the army. 

Worrying that the fortune teller’s premonition would come true once again, Leonarda started to believe defy the prophecy, would have to use black magic in the form of human sacrifice.

Her first victim was Faustian Setti. Leonarda’s had lured her to her house under the pretence of helping her find a husband in Pola. Once inside Leonarda’s home, she attacked the unsuspecting woman with an axe. Two more women - Francesca Soavi and Virginia Cacioppo - met the same fate. While the murders themselves were heinous enough, what Leonarda did following the gruesome murders stunned the country.

After dismembering the bodies, Leonarda boiled the pieces with caustic soda and made soap. “Her flesh was fat and white, when it had melted I added a bottle of cologne, and after a long time on the book I was able to make some most acceptable creamy soap,” she declared. In addition to the grim soap, she also baked cakes, confessing: “As for the blood, I waited until it had coagulated, dried it in the oven, ground and mixed it with flour, sugar, chocolate, milk, eggs, margarine, kneading the ingredients together.” She served these macabre treats to her unsuspecting guests, delivered them to her neighbours, and ate them herself. 

Leonarda was found guilty and sentenced to thirty years in prison and three in an asylum. She died in 1970.

On April 20th 1999, 13 innocent people were senselessly killed in a shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. Today, 20 years later, we still feel the void of their absence. We remember their lives, the people they were, and who they could’ve become. Although their time here was cut short, they live on in our memories everyday. We will not forget them.
