Coach Dave Sanders

William “Dave” Sanders was a computer and business teacher at Columbine for 25 years, and coach of the girls’ basketball and softball teams.

When the gunmen started firing outside the school he ran to the cafeteria and sounded the alarm. He, along with two of the school’s janitors, helped get more than 100 students out of the path of danger by leading them out of the cafeteria. Thanks to him, the cafeteria was almost empty by the time the shooters made it inside. He saved untold numbers of lives that day.

While helping students get to safety upstairs, he was shot from behind by Eric Harris. He died of blood loss about 3 hours later. He left behind his wife, four children and five grandchildren, but left a lasting impression on anyone that heard his story.

Thank you Dave, for making the ultimate sacrifice that day, and for doing everything you could to keep your kids safe.
