A Word of Caution
It is easy to get wrapped up in the romance of a big movement which demands change. These days protest culture is almost a status symbol. We change our profile pictures to reflect our causes and we share videos on social media to ā€œspread awareness,ā€ when for the most part, weā€™re screaming into an echo chamber. I do it too, so Iā€™m not judging. If anything, the digital collaborative diary that weā€™ve all been keeping probably has some therapeutic benefitsā€” more likely, it cancels out the harm that it causes. The reason I drafted this post is to pass on a word of caution. Iā€™ve been seeing a lot about this 50 protests in 50 states thing that is going on and Iā€™ve been getting concerned.
First off, this was largely organized over Reddit, a site that is essentially the digital equivalent of a narc. Speaking as someone who has a put in a lot of volunteer hours in locating hidden profiles of missing persons, I can comfortably tell you that Reddit will hand over your information with next to no pushbackā€” discord will do this too. It also has roots in BlueSky, and while I am a fan of Bluesky, it is far to new to know anything about how it may operate when faced with turning information over. Experienced organizers know this.
Secondly, when I did some digging, I found what is the equivalent of an invitation to the protest in my home town. The site had a few things that I need to see when it comes to organizing (rules, goals, a schedule.) Still, I found the red flag in that it offered no way to contact the organizer. The schedule did list the name of who is supposedly putting the event together, but I could not locate their profile anywhere. We absolutely have to make sure that when protesting what is going on right now, we are following people with experience. No faceless profiles if we are risking our bodies.
Finally, this movement seems to offer no protection for the people protesting. This is the biggest red flag of all. Iā€™m seeing posts telling you to call out of work, but not telling you how they will ensure your financial security should you lose your job. Iā€™m also not seeing anything about guaranteed legal representation in the incredibly likely event of arrests being made. This, to me, is exceedingly concerning.
The situation we have found ourselves in is new to our shores. I hesitate to compare it to anything that we have faced, but if I had to pick something, Iā€™d say it more closely resembles the lead up to the American Revolution than any other protest weā€™ve had since. Iā€™m not saying that we should not protest, but if we do, we need everything done by the book while the book is still there

I've generally been treating this blog as a refuge from...all the things. But since posts about these "protests" have been going around, I wanted to share these words of caution in the interest of helping everyone stay safe. There is definitely work to be done, but we need to be smart about it. No charging into territory blind.
Stay safe. ā¤ļø

Life advice for the ages. Those doing wrong want you tired and hopeless. But stay angry. And when a chance is in front of you: bite back. Digital plans for a real linocut. I'm anxiously awaiting a press to make this stuff possible with my RSI in my hands.

knew this woman who used to be a gay man and when he was a gay man he liked ā€˜ironicallyā€™ referring to himself as she/her and so when he came out as a woman he decided the next logical step was to also switch his pronouns to he/him.
