#it makes me very sad that people are apparently okay with species' dying out as long as they're “unappealing”#like i'm still slightly scared of some bugs but i'm not going to say that they should go extinct#THE ECOSYSTEM IS IMPORTANT#ORGANISMS LIVE IN THAT ECOSYSTEM FOR A REASON#ecology#zoology#insect#insects#entomology

Shit like this is insanely rude and I hate that 1. Having this attitude about bugs & 2. Proudly proclaiming that you have this attitude about bugs (and doing so entirely unprompted on top of that) (especially in response to an Entomologist!!!!!) is considered a normal and acceptable thing to do
#scared of some bugs but still very much interested in a few of them and this behaviour infuriates me#imagine someone saying “i like cake!” only for another person to go “eww cake is disgusting!!” completely unprompted#this even extends to people being glad that some insects are going extinct#listen i know mosquitoes may be terrifying to you but not only are they necessary they can also be interesting#don't just randomly put people down for no reason#sorry just felt the need to rant#zoology#entomology

Komodo dragons have iron-tipped teeth, new study shows
Komodo dragons, the world’s largest species of lizard, have iron-tipped teeth that help them to rip their prey apart, according to new research. The metal is concentrated in the cutting edge and tips of their curved, serrated teeth, staining them orange, scientists wrote in a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. Komodo dragons are native to Indonesia and weigh around 80 kilograms (176 pounds) on average. They eat almost any kind of meat and are known as deadly predators...

HEY GUYS CONTACT YOUR SENATORS/REPRESENTATIVES VIA THIS EASY TOOL ON PET ADVOCACY NETWORK TO BRING TO THEIR ATTENTION THE BAN ON (CERTAIN) REPTILE HEAT LAMPS AND UVB BULBS
This is disastrous for reptile keepers.
Due to a regulation enacted by the Department of Energy (DOE) back in 2022 that aimed at improving energy efficiency for lightbulbs found in the average American home, companies that make essential pet products like heat lamps for reptiles, are now being told to remove them from shelves across America because of the light bulbs they contain. That means removing access to vital lamp products that pet owners need to make sure their pets stay healthy and thriving.
Also remember to customize the message so it's not just the same endless emails to their offices, I changed the subject and wrote a personal message at the top.

PSA: we need to save the bali myna
today i got really mad out of nowhere about this and decided that if nobody is going to talk about these birds and their conservation, i will. the bali myna is a small bird found only in bali. they are critically endangered - fewer than 100 adults exist in the wild. (and there’s around 1000 in captivity) the biggest threat towards the bali myna is likely its demand in the captive bird trade - they can fetch extremely high prices on the black market.’
plus, they look like this
so how can you help?
donate to bali safari marine park - currently maintaining a captive gene pool of bali mynas + boosting their population
donate to begawan foundation - breeding and releasing bali mynas, and educating local communities on these birds
educate others on responsible pet purchases + avoid feeding into the pet trade that endangers so many beautiful species.

I literally cannot express to you how important it is to never touch a wild animal that you can’t definitively identify
(That is NOT a scarlet king it’s a venomous coral snake that very politely allowed this person to live)
