Lino printing
monday 30th of november. we attempted lino printing with either images we made or got from the images. i chose to do the thundercats symbol and sketched how i wanted it to look on the piece of lino.
i wanted the original symbol but i decided to make a bolt of lighting going through the middle just to make it a little different.
after that i cut it into the piece of lino to make a stamp. i think i could have done better with this and i felt like i rushed slightly. i think that if i put more time into it it would have looked better and more like the original symbol.
despite the fact i rushed it i thnk that the quality of the prints were good and i still liked the end result even if it wasnt quite what i imagined.

Reportage
on monday the 23rd of november we were partnered up with another student to draw eachother for an hour to an hour and a half on an a3 or a2 piece of paper.
i was partnered up with Chris Morgan and so we sat across from one another.
i think that it was a good attempt of drawing chris however, i feel like i made his eyes too big which causes it to look wrong to me. however, i enjoyed the way how chris drew me, unfortunately i dont have a picture example of his drawing though.
tuesday 24th of november we went down cardiff bay and waled towards penarth doing a form of drawing which is known as reportage and is essentially trying to record something through your drawings, and telling a short story, at least thats what i thought was meant by it.
i was very proud of myself to see how much i had improved in such a small amount of time. i would never have been able to draw as much with such little time when i first started the course and by the end of it i was able to roughly draw people, mostly in proportion. im mostly proud of the one on the train where i managed to get a decent portrayal of the perspective going down the train.

Basic perspective and spotting perspective
on monday 16th we looked into drawing perspective and starting off the day with drawing a cube in 1,2, and 3 point perspective to give us a basic understanding before we moved on
1 point perspective:
2 point perspective:
3 point perspective:
even though its just drawing simple cuboids and cubes in perspective ive always found this form of exercise fun to do whilst you get ready to draw perspectives. after we understood this basic variations we went on to making up a composition of items of either things we saw in the room or things we decided to make up and then drawing them in 1,2, or 3 point perspective.
i dont think this is perfect but i think for the task of drawing items in perspective i did well and i am quite proud of it. with the book shelves i think i exaggerated the perspective a bit too much but i think it adds an interesting feel to the drawing and im very happy with it (if only i could do it with my characters now)
after that we tried to draw perspective within the room by sketching it.
in my opinion i completely failed with this one and i dont think theres the slightest bit of perspective in the entire drawing and im disappointed in myself and this drawing however, i felt that my completion of the other tasks were good.
Tuesday 17th of November. we went out and tried to draw things that showed perspective in the world.
we were tasked with finding examples of all three variants of perspective within Cardiff central. unfortunately it was raining at the time so it limited what we could all do. however despite the quality of the drawings i think i managed to find some pretty good examples of the three different types of perspective within cardiff.
Life drawing:
for this weeks life drawing i really enjoyed it. i found it really fun to draw the models muscles and thought all his muscles were well defined making it easier to figure out how and where to place the lines whilst drawing. and i enjoyed more so because he had a similar body type to how characters from dragon ball z are drawn and thats one of the first things that got me drawing in the first place so it strangely triggered nostalgia drawing him.

Composition
To start off this entry i will show a piece of work that should of been in last weeks post. i was tasked with doing another self portrait however, i had to do this without using contour lines and only using shading.
i think i did okay not to great, i still accidentally used contour lines for areas such as the ears and eyes but other than that i was following the shadows of my face.
this week (monday 9th of November onwards) the task was to look at composition and to consider it when looking at illustrations and making our own illustrations. the first task was to take previously made illustrations and check the compositions of them.
these were the three illustrations i chose to check the compositions of and i did so using the rule of 3s grid as well as the using the fibonacci spiral. this helped me understand as to where more details or focal points will be within an illustration.
after this we were asked to look in our galleries on our phones and choose pictures to draw in thumbnail sketches but draw them with better composition.
i chose to rough sketches of both a squirrel and pigeon that were both on my phone. i decided to change the composition by closing on on them, causing them to go off the side of the image, not showing their full bodies. for the squirrel image i made it so that if you were following the rule of 3, it would only fill roughly a third of the image whereas with the pigeon i made it fill roughly two thirds of the image. for the extended task we had to take one of our own illustrations and and change the composition.
i chose this illustration i had done for colour and communication and decided to zoom into the face of the samurai within the drawing. i then added a fading black to the edge of the image to make it look like its fading from black. i dont think i did too well with this.
on Tuesday we went to cardiff museum. the first task of the day was to quickly sketch the compositions of paintings we saw to record them.
after this we were told to do some warm up sketches of what we could see around the museum.
the drawings had to be quick continuous lines and there had to be three of them. even though they are messy i would say that this task helped show me that my continuous line drawing is getting better.
for the third task of the day we had to sketch more of the exhibits but think of composition whilst doing so.
i would say i successfully thought about composition whilst drawing these into my sketchbook. the one i would say i didnt do that well on is the mammoths skull. i feel like i could have done better with it.
for our fourth and final task of the day we had to make a composition fitting a specific word and drawing something that would help portray that word.
i chose the word horror and decided to draw a fox looking down at a stoat. i saw both of these animals seperately in the natural history section of the museum and decided to draw them together to make it seem like the stoat is the foxes pray.
in conclusion i dont think i quite got the hang of composition but im only just starting to look into it and will hopefully get better at it over time. the tasks set this week has definately helped with thinking about it and has helped me to understand it.

Drawing purely with shading
for Monday 2nd November we were tasked with first making a observational contour line drawing and then on a separate page of tracing paper we would shade the drawing from underneath without making any actual new lines
honestly I like both the contour line and the shading on the tracing paper and I found this to be fairly fun and I think I did well however, I realise I didn't choose a very complex portion of the collection of items but it was still a good angle i got on the items.
Wednesday
we had another male model this week and i was more comfortable drawing this one because of his muscle definition however i didnt go into as much detail as possible and i feel like i did less than last week however i wasnt feeling really great at the time of the lesson

Merge of reality and fiction
for the week following Monday the 26th of October we were tasked with doing an observational drawing and then taking a picture of it whilst it was placed in front of the object we were drawing to make it look like it was apart of the picture. we were allowed to add what we wanted to the drawings as well. my first attempt of this was to draw one of my own characters sat in my desk chair.
I don't think it was great but was a good first attempt. After I spoke to my instructor/ teacher (idk what I'm supposed to call him professionally😅) he said what I was thinking and I should try again but something more ambitious or detailed
I then did this one. I think this was a better attempt but due to bad weather I didn't want to risk walking all the way to the area I was supposed to go to take the picture in case it got damaged. I think the bricks I did quite well however, I felt I should have spent more time on the actual character because it doesn't look right to me and annoys me slightly
even though I felt I had done enough for the task I did an extra quick one just in case of me drawing half of my characters face with bits of my room in the background. i tried to draw it in line with my face but not everything fit into place as you can see and there wasnt very much observational drawing when doing this one. i also drew my characters scar on the wrong eye.
Despite finding a fair few flaws with my drawings in this task i found it quite fun and might try to do it again at some point but put more time into it and possibly add more than one character and making it so it is a bigger area.
Wednesday life drawing
with each life drawing lesson i feel like im getting better. I think that this weeks lesson was my best one
I mainly try to get the pose down before anything else and as I said I think I did quite well with this week and im proud i managed to get rough shading and face features down this week.

Life drawing
on Wednesday 14th of October and wednesday the 21st of october i took part in life drawing classes with both a male and female model. since it was my first time in a live life drawing class it was a bit awkward for me but i got used to it fairly quickly. Within the lessons we started off with 2 minutes to draw the model and by the end of the session we would have a full 25 minutes to draw them.
the first week was the female model and i think i did quite well with it however, i am aware that not everything is in proportion but for my first life drawing lesson i am quite proud of myself which is a change from my normal pessimistic nature.
the second week was a male model and i feel as though i was more confident with drawing him than i was with the female model. i feel this is due to me being more familiar with male anatomy than female and when i do my personal drawings i prefer to draw my male characters. i think i did well with this one too but i need to work on being able to put the head into the drawings too.

Mark making
on Monday 19th of October we were tasked with creating textures using different tools and materials whilst also trying to do observational drawing of fish with these tools.
As more of a warm up than anything else we had to make different textures based on prompts that were given to us with the tools we had.
then we had a go at inking in a sketch of the fish we did before moving onto a large scale. I don't think I did that bad with the inking on this smaller fish and was quite proud of how it turned out
however, this attempts went extremely bad, I didn't water down the ink enough before going in for the detail and as a result I feel as though the drawing suffered. i feel like i could have been more patient and gone slower with it
when it came to the last drawing we were asked to switch the fish we were drawing and i feel i did much better with this fish than the other although i still don't think its very good but i feel as though i did better.
i found the task fun and interesting to do and even though i don't think i did too well i definitely learned from doing this, it is very different from me using fine liners all the time to ink my drawings and is possibly something i will consider practising and attempt to get better at doing for my own personal drawings

Scale
on monday 12th of october we had to bring items from home to sketch. i decided to sketch one of my figures
we decided we would take our chosen object and repeatedly draw it on different scales with different time limits on our drawings. the first drawing was 2 minutes (i think) and went up from there along side the scale of the drawings. it went something like 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes for the first couple.
all of them resemble the figure to an extent so they're good in a way i just wish i had more time with them and could make them look better. i need to improve on drawing with small amounts of time. however i think since i started ive improved drastically. after we drew these we either had to improve one of them or draw another one on a4 to then be translated onto four pieces of a1 paper to make one large drawing.
This ended up being my largest drawing and i didnt get very far and im not proud of it in the slightest. it doesnt match my other drawings and im jut very disappointed with how it came out. we had around 30 to 50 minutes to do it but i was getting upset and frustrated with it and due to this i didnt get very far with the drawing. there are two things really which make me upset with this drawing, the face and the fact that its lower than what it is in the reference drawing i made. i much prefer all of the build up drawings rather than the final drawing
the next day Tuesday 13th of October we went drawing on location this time to Cardiff bay. we took what we had learned about scale from the day before and put it to use on a large drawing of areas down the bay. we split off in to groups of 6 or less and did collaborative pieces but our group of 6 (or 5 in our case) would split again with 2 going off and drawing for 15-30 minutes and 3 of us staying behind getting the drawing started, after that we would switch and it would be our turn to draw whatever we wanted down the bay.
i did these whilst waiting to go back to the larger drawing and i could have spent less time on each individual drawing and just tried to get more down rather than make sure things were done as accurate i could manage, so im a little bit annoyed with myself that i didnt get more done but i will just try to get some more done in my own time. unfortunately i didnt manage to capture progress images of the larger piece, however i do have a finished image of it
.when i came back and saw this i thought it looked really good and i love the clouds that were done for it, unfortunately i feel like i contributed very little to the overall drawing and was mostly my other team members. i think the proportions are really accurate and the use of charcoal and textures were really well done. i just wish i could have done more and i feel that personally i wasted the day when i could have done so much more.

Negative space and perspective drawing
on Monday 5th of October I took part in the set task of drawing negative space around an object essentially drawing an outline/silhouette. we did this using a view finder to draw specific parts of the object in front of us.
To start i did two thumbnail practice drawings of both objects. one being a bike and the other being the leg of a skeleton. i thought i did fairly well with keeping things in proportion but afterwards i did see slight problems with proportions and certain things being in the wrong place however i found it enjoyable and thought it was a good start
i then moved on to full page drawings using the view finder as a reference as to where the edges of the page would be, working from there i drew the pelvis area of the skeleton working down to the thigh bone. Again i think i did a good job with it i just did a couple things out of proportion but its more difficult when you cant draw the details of the skeleton.
after drawing the skeleton i moved on to the bike. this was much harder to draw and i was getting very frustrated with a lot of parts on this drawing because i couldnt make it look right no matter what i did. however i was told i was doing well with it so i kept with it and managed to get this much done. i think it was harder because its got more small parts on it and small gaps where the chains would normally be.
on Tuesday 6th of October the entire class went out drawing on location and we had to focus on perspective drawing. we had to go to the indoor market after realising the weather was too bad for Cardiff castle. we were supposed to go to castle arcade as well but were kicked out so we all came to the indoor market and drew the market from second floor.
to start off i drew some practice sketches quickly to help get me in the right mindset to drawing what was below. i think the first two were really good but i spent a fair bit of time on them and was getting bored of drawing them if i am entirely honest, so when it came to the bottom two i drew them quicker and more loose so i could quickly move onto the full page drawing. i don't think i did bad but i do wish i had more patience to put more detail into them.
for the full page drawing i was told my perspective was strong and was what was wanted from that drawing session. i have to say im proud of it and enjoyed drawing and focusing on one thing larger scale rather than quick small drawings. i like how i added the smaller details in the center part. it does annoy me slightly how it isnt finished but i was really impatient with it the first time and i think i was just drained on the day we went out, however i did come back before class this monday and started adding more with what time i had before class started.
overall i think that last week wasnt a bad week for my drawings i think i did what was asked of me to a good standard but i would happily redo them again to try and get better outcomes in the future.

Observational drawings task: Cardiff
I was a bit nervous about this task to begin with because of the limited time we got as well as the having to draw from life. The task was to wonder around Cardiff in groups of threes drawing a mixed variety of objects in a direction that was determined via dice roll. We would then have a time set via dice roll. My group consisted of myself, Ozzy, and Megan
The beginning of our task was done outside the USW building where we had five minutes to draw what we saw, I felt as though I did poorly. this is due to the act I didn't manage to get much down whilst having a fairly large amount of time (in comparison to future time restraints
Within the five minutes I attempted to draw a potted plant which I think was a poor choice because I found that there it wasn’t pushing me with the time, I needed to do something bigger and more challenging. after the five minutes ended we moved on and I attempted to draw a broken wall within three minutes, as you can see I didn't get very far and I was struggling with getting much down within the time.
realising this I tried drawing faster trying my hardest not to care about too many details just more basic shapes and lines. I feel like this is apparent in these drawings however I still feel they aren't great
I felt as I drew more I was getting used to drawing at fast speeds and was panicking a bit less to get certain things down however this was in exchange of things being more scribbled or light lines. I wasn't particularly proud of any of my sketches but a few did turn out a lot better than what I thought they would. if I were to choose a favourite of these drawings I think I would choose the window that I drew next to the tree. there was just something about the pattern I enjoyed drawing and I think it didn't come out terribly
Overall I did enjoy the activity, it was fun walking around Cardiff and drawing what I saw as well as getting to know my peers more whilst doing so. seeing how they did with the task inspired me and made me want to better my drawing skills.
