Our Launch
Last week the significance of the launch of our new online service for London travel suppliers, TripTide.London, was put into sharp contrast against the events a day earlier. In Westminster on 22nd March 2017 a madman masquerading in the name of Islam killed several people.聽
We had hired a delightful restaurant on the Southbank 聽on the 23rd March (https://triptide.london/triptoids/bao-fa-garden)聽for an early evening soiree in full view of the killing field and waited for our guests in the expectation that many would not show due the murderous events of the day before.聽
I should have realised that Londoners being Londoners are never fazed by such overt acts of terror and London is almost impossible to shut down. Neither the Luftwaffe nor the IRA and now not even the disaffected miscreants of ISIS can stop the momentum of our city. Guest after defiant guest piled through the door 聽as a reminder that to us all that very little if anything would be enough to halt London鈥檚 inexorable momentum. Our only threat to the evening was National Puppy Day聽which had a similar event in a different part of town.
London can be a strange and daunting place but it will never be cowed and fearful. If the terrorist group who perpetrated this dreadful and cowardly attack wanted to drive people behind locked doors their actions 聽had the opposite effect. People were talking on the tube, smiling at police officers and were ever more mindful of our muslim community.
So a word to the next wave of terrorist idiots - you will have to try harder than that if you want to hurt us.

Discover your Inner London
It鈥檚 impossible to know London. You can meet her many times, several times a day, over years and decades, and still not know her. The London I met when I was twelve years old on my first trip to Europe was vastly different to the one I met when I visited during my undergrad, and vastly different still from the one I met once I moved here. Trapesing from landmark to landmark won鈥檛 introduce you to the idiosyncrasies of London鈥檚 boroughs or contribute to the overall identity of England鈥檚 capital. Walking tours and bus tours are the equivalent to reading the sleeve of a novel and setting the book back down on the shelf, and unfortunately, that鈥檚 all most visitors have time for. They will never know the out-of-the way hidden gem that locales are so fond of, or the best stores or the fastest routes or even how all of these faces of London interconnect. This however introduces a debate for London鈥檚 short-time visitors. Should they stick with the tours and the landmarks, or should they break away and discover a London that鈥檚 personal to them? Neither option will provide tourists with the full breadth of what London has to offer, and, really, it depends on what you鈥檙e searching for when you travel. Is it for the postcard experience? Is it for the arts? The markets? The shopping? To catch a glimpse of the lives of Londoners? To trace the footsteps of celebrities? There is a London for everyone, and everyone鈥檚 London is different. To meet your true match, however, you first have to ask yourself what you want from London, what kind of experience you鈥檙e itching for, and the pace you want to go. Inevitably, what entices people to travel is to experience. After all, if all we were truly interested in when visiting foreign places was to see things, then surely photographs or even Google Maps鈥檚 street view would do. But it鈥檚 not the same. Digital recreations (even those amazing new 360o videos) cannot substitute the experience of being here, and that is why it is crucial to to ask yourself what experience you want from London. Very rarely have I ever met anyone who has not had a preconceived notion of what they expect to feel when in London. It鈥檚 quite peculiar, but London is so famous everyone has expectations of it. Bearing this in mind, to truly meet your London, the one you have in your mind鈥檚 eye and already love in your heart, you鈥檙e going to have to do a little digging. You鈥檒l find the places that you鈥檙e interested in, the places that might be off the beaten track, the ones that feel like the home you鈥檝e never been to. There are events and markets and pop-up shops and street performances and a thousand other things you might find in London. Some you will find online, others you will discover, and sadly, many will slip by you unnoticed. Do not despair, though, because it really only means one thing. You鈥檒l have a new London to meet on your next visit
