What to Look for When Buying Cannabis and Hemp Seeds
Buying cannabis and hemp seeds to plant them will reap endless benefits. That’s because you can reduce costs, ensure quality control, and have an added sense of accomplishment. Some strains are easier to grow in that they have a shorter growth period and are more resilient. Other strains are the complete opposite. So, there are many elements at play to consider. Thus the question, how do you choose the right strain of seeds? Learn about the most popular strains to make the best decision for you. There’s also a tip at the end on where to purchase quality CBD seeds online.
Cannabis seeds
Marijuana comes from both Cannabis Indica and Sativa. In addition, there are three types of cannabis seeds species to select from:
1. Regular seeds
Regular seeds tend to produce some of the best results. Also, they can grow into either male or female plants. For breeders who would like to develop strain varieties, regular seeds are the best for experimenting. However, they aren't as in demand as they used to be. Also, you have to spot and take out the male plants quickly. That’s because you need to prevent the female from pollinating.
2. Feminized auto-flowering seeds
Autoflowering seeds start to blossom on their own after about four weeks. Flowering is based on their genetic schedule and time, not light exposure. Consequently, they have a faster seed-to-harvest time, maturing in almost half the time it would take some strains of feminized photoperiod seeds. Feminized seeds are great for growing indoors. Not only that, but they are a fantastic choice for beginners who have restricted time, space, and planting knowledge.
3. Feminized photoperiod seeds
These types only sprout female plants, hence the name. These feminized seeds grow well indoors and need a certain amount of light to flower. The advantage of feminized seeds is that they yield big buds abundant in resin. That’s a great reason to opt for these types of seeds.
Hemp seeds
Hemp comes from Cannabis Sativa. Hemp seeds are created from a male and female hemp plant. The male plant creates pollen that pollinates the female flowers, and a fully formed seed is got in less than two months.
However, there are female hemp plants called hermaphrodites that create their pollen sacks to pollinate themselves or other female plants. The seeds created in this manner have no male parents and thus are known as feminized seeds. Hemp seeds are either used for industrial purposes or medicinal purposes. Industrial hemp seeds are packaged as food. In contrast, medicinal seeds are specifically bred to contain high CBD hemp strains.
A mature hemp seed that’s ready for germination will be dark and firm. But, a soft and white hemp seed will not sprout. Hemp seeds require the right amount of water and temperatures to germinate. Thus, if you’re buying them for consumption or future use, then store them in a cool, dry place.
Some factors make growing seeds either easy or difficult. For example, if you’re planning to grow outdoors in cold and rainy areas, you’ll need seed strains that are naturally resilient and have a quick growth rate to harvest before pests, mold, and rot set in. On the contrary, if you’re planting in the sunny outdoors or indoors, then you don’t need to time how long a strain will take to harvest.
