Want to Help But Don’t Know How? Tresna Foundation Will Help You Make Dreams Come True
If there was a magic lamp for fulfilling the dreams of the underprivileged, what would you have wished for on their behalf? A sturdy house for the lonely, elderly lady who quietly shelters herself under the flyover, her only shield from the wrath of the rain and sun? Education and a bright future for the child knocking at your car window, trying to sell off a stack of books to survive another day? A meal for the construction worker who washes dirty utensils for meagre wages part-time?
Magic lamps and genies may be fictional, but dreams and wishes are as much a part of reality as anything else. But the bridge between dreaming and turning that dream into reality may not always be impossible to cross, especially if you know the right route to reach it.
Tresna Foundation is one such organisation in Gujarat, that is tirelessly working on assisting the privileged to support the rural families amidst COVID pandemic and hunger crises.

5 simple ways you can help during the COVID-19 crisis
Some of these can be done without leaving your couch
As the coronavirus spread continues in India, we are grappling with uncertainty and adapting to a newer way of life staying at home. The long weeks without stepping out might have induced a sense of helplessness about the situation at hand. Don’t despair! Though it may not feel like staying home, staying informed, washing hands, caring for self and loved ones are acts of bravery, they are the best we can do to protect our communities and indirectly the world at large. However, if you wish to be more helpful, here are some ways to make a difference.
Reach out to your helpers Many domestic helpers such as maids, cooks, drivers, guards, etc provide essential services and help make our everyday lives better. In these trying times, they are among the hardest hit with no work and loss of income. This is the best time to help them and also the easiest group to reach out to. Besides raising their awareness about the virus and ways to protect themselves, consider providing them with necessary food items, masks, safety kits, etc by pooling in resources as a community.
Check on elderly neighbors Most communities have senior citizens who stay alone and are most vulnerable. Due to social isolation and without their domestic help, they may be finding it difficult to manage. A little help can go a long way. You can assist them by checking on them frequently, delivering or placing online orders for food items, medicines and other essentials.
Tresna Foundation NGO, registered under section 25 of the Companies Act. Our partner NGOs, who have the necessary permissions from the government to work on the ground during the lockdown, ensure that people who are in the greatest need receive at least minimal help – and this is made possible through online donations.
Every little bit helps. You can donate us here or to any one of our missions on our website tresnafoundation.org

TOWARDS A BETTER HEALTH FOR THE UNPRIVILEGED:-
As in the field of education, the general health scenario has been steadily improving significantly for last four decades in India. The life expectancy at birth has increased from 49.7 years in 1970-1975 to 68 years in 2018. The infant mortality rate has declined from 74 per 1,000 live births in 1994 to 37 per 1,000 live births in 2015. The under-five years mortality rate for the country was 113 per 1,000 live births in 1994 whereas in 2018 it reduced to 41.1 per 1,000 live births. This coincides with better healthcare facilities in the country. However, this rosy picture is macroscopic and the reality for underprivileged and marginalized is very dark. The fruits of better healthcare facilities and better medicines have not reached them and they still grapple with diseases and epidemics because of this. The health situation of these groups in India is very poor as compared to other sections of population. There are multiple socio-economic disadvantages that they experience which limits their access to health and healthcare and not enough attention has been given towards their health condition. There is a huge difference in health scenario of the general population and of the poor and marginalized. Tresna endevours to bridge this gap in urban as well as rural Gujarat through its health interventions to reach out to the underprivileged communities. With our efforts we aim to improve health conditions of these communities as well as address the malnutrition problems because of poverty.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT; SELF-RELIANCE FOR MANY
The significance of skill development initiatives, especially for the poor, is immense in India. One of the chief reasons for poverty is lack of education which in turn gives rise to unemployment. Another glaring reality is that there is a lack of enough employment opportunities even for educated people in urban India. In rural areas, uneducated people who work as farm laborers are highly susceptible to poverty, especially in some parts of the country, as agriculture in many parts of the country relies heavily on favorable climatic conditions. Besides, the introduction of modern equipment in agriculture has heavily affected the employment opportunities for these people. One of the key interventions that can address this is skill development of the poor. We, at Tresna Foundation, believe strongly that skill development initiatives in urban as well as rural Gujarat will go a long way in combating the vicious circle of poverty. Skill development efforts empower the poor to earn their livelihood and lead a dignified life.

Education Empowerment - Tresna Foundation
It is true that the general level of literacy at a macro level has been steadily going up in India after independence. As per 2011 census, the literacy rate in the country is 74.04% whilst that of Gujarat is 79.31. However, what is alarming is the quality of education in Gujarat as well as all over the country. As per the eighth edition of evaluation of government primary schools by the state government (Gunotsav), the state of school education is dismal in Gujarat. The picture painted by The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER 2018) conducted by an independent unit of Pratham, one of the largest NGOs involved in the field of education, is even more pessimistic. It says that 90% of class 2 students of private and government schools in rural Gujarat cannot read their own books and 56% of class 8 students cannot do basic division. This grave situation demands more intensive efforts in improving the quality of education rather than just focusing on getting the students of under 14 years to schools through RTI. This is where one of the focus areas of Tresna Foundation lies; to contribute in improving the quality of education of primary school children through quality teaching at special education centres established by us. Our other major focus is on supporting the education of underprivileged children over 14 years and ensure that they get support to improve the quality of their education. We believe that this will empower them to get an opportunity to change the course of their life with better employment opportunities that education facilitates. Our focus is also on the education of girl child, which we address through special projects devoted to this cause.

“As a teenager, I struggled with anxiety and OCD. #NoOneToldMe what these intrusive thoughts were all about, or why they seemed to be so embarrassing and shameful. No one told me what this condition was, no one in my family had any vocabulary for it in any of their languages. No one told me that it would take as many tries as it did to find the right therapist and medication. No one told me about the exhausting journey it would take me and my family on. No one told me there were proven, evidence-based methods for something called OCD.” From advocate and board member @solome33 💜
