La Rogativa on Flickr.
La Rogativa stands at the end of Caleta de las Monjas, right on the edge of the city wall, just inside the San Juan Gate entrance. It is a modern style bronze sculpture made by Lindsay Daen in 1971. It depicts the 1797 procession of the Bishop and religious women which is said to have scared off an invading British fleet. Allegedly, the British assumed the procession was actually military reinforcements.

I just read the comment threads
on two NPR articles and the disagreements were sometimes strong, but arguments were expressed in mostly thoughtful and patient exchanges - so maybe I like some of the internet again.

bread
When I was a kid, had to be somewhere between 4th-7th grade, I read a  book about a family of young, homeless siblings. I don't remember if they were orphaned or separated from guardians, or where they were headed - but they had a destination. What I do remember, so vividly, was that they had a fixed amount of money (seven dollars or something) with which to eat for some number of days. They had no idea when/if they'd obtain more cash for food. The eldest sister, an early teen, protagonist and decision maker, brought them to a grocery and bought very strategically. A passage described her sort of mental cost-benefit analysis of everything at the grocery and she landed on bread (+ peanut butter, I think) to offer the most calories, share potential among the four (three?) siblings, and ability to carry leftovers for days and eat on the fly.
Bread, and sandwiches (sometimes only peanut butter, often pb n j) have gotten me through some tough financial days. For ~$5 pb & a loaf of bread will provide ~10 sandwiches which can keep you going with other supplements left around the house. It's not the healthiest decision but for $1.29 a loaf of bread really does buy you a lot.
That bread-cost-bene-passage is what I think about every time I
- buy a loaf of bread (should I, shouldn't I? Fuck it - it's only $1.29 and it lasts YOU MIGHT NEED IT),
- accidentally let one go moldy and don't feel terrible (you can replace this for $1.29 and you have more than that girl in the book),
- or make use of use of one in times of peril (i love you and all of your cheap calories that I can buy with couch cushion change, bread).
Many thanks to you, eldest sister in nameless young adult fiction novel about runaway children, for reminding/haunting me of/with of the value of a loaf, every, single day.

Sometimes it feels so strange that we aren't there. That there is more than half a nation that separates us. I feel like I should be able to hop in the Subaru and drive to Grandma Sally's or the barn or the ocean, but in reality it's on the other side of the country. I haven't been there in months nor do I know when/if I'll ever be there again. It's not my Subaru and Sally's not my Grandma. But sometimes that all feels too strange. It's easier to conceive of a world where Washington is just down the street and Sandy and Cam can pose for a picture any day they want and I'll be there to take it.
