Do you have a favorite animal?
Although it’s difficult to objectively justify certain animals over others, I’ve always held a particular affinity for snakes, for behavioral reasons as well as the plethora of insightful symbolism they’re associated with.
There’s a far lesser propensity for snakes to be domesticated, deceived, conditioned, etc, and thus they embody the truth in their focused initiative to refine and expand; I’ve always admired this component of their psychology/biology, considering that it’s the fundamental component to our own, though buried beneath layers of delusions and fear-based conditioning.
The biblical tale of Eden has the snake as the bringer of truth, suggesting Eve eat from the tree of knowledge, rather than blindly yield to authority. The Ouroboros (snake eating it’s own tail) is my favorite symbol, simply because of how much wisdom is compacted in it. Life feeds on life, the universe consumes itself to sustain itself, alluding again to the process of refinement.

Typography Tuesday
Today we present Jeffrey Morin’s and Steve Ferlauto’s investigation of the sacred geometry of Roman letter forms in The Sacred Abecedarium, printed in an edition of 26 copies by Morin at his sailorBOYpress in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, in 2000. Their alphabetic geometry is based on architectural notions of the “Sacred Cut” and the “Golden Section.” As Morin states (or perhaps overstates), “Math is a manifestation of God and the Roman alphabet is its most poetic application.” This book was designed to make that case.
Ferlauto provided the detailed typographic analysis from which the blocks were made by Royal Engraving of La Crosse, Wisconsin. He also provided the tonal decisions on the alphabet drawings, which were hand-painted and collaged by Morin, who also made the paper from a mix of abaca and linen fiber with color coming from scraps of cotton clothes: “It was created to remind one of vellum and to interact with the engraved line to produce a mark that seems more drawn than printed.” The main text type is Cochin Light from M & H Foundry, with additional unnamed Gothic fonts.
Five additional copies of this book were produced for friends and organizations, including the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine and the Lindisfarne Associatoin. This book is directly related to a latter book by Morin that we highlighted in our Book/Not Book series, Sacred Space.
