"Sure, some people will lose some rights and privacy, but at least we're protecting the kids!"
When I was 14, I used to carry a flashdrive with TOR on it to bypass the school's internet safety filters so I could get on Facebook and play flash games. Kids are smarter than you want to think. You aren't protecting shit.

Saw someone say that Star Wars is the only fandom in the history of the world where literally every opinion you might have is controversial. And its a bit of an exaggeration but its not all wrong lol.
No it's true because you have people who will insist a fanon they read years ago and see spread around a lot is canon, people will look canon in the eye and say it doesn't exist, people will just quote canon and be told they're wrong, literally everything has a group of people maybe one mutual away from you who'll block you on site for liking/disliking the PT/OT/ST/cartoons/anything LA/books/games. I think the fandom is so large that we're at a roughly 50/50 split on Opinions. So you're always going to "start a fight" by just. Saying what's in your head.
To me the bigger issue is the people who are scared of negative or dissenting opinions and keeping making juvenile posts (tweets. I only ever see this on twitter) like "why would you talk about something you don't like? Why can't you only talk about the things you like? Why aren't you positive and uncritical and accepting all the time and why do you make it known you don't like something?" Its v annoying

the only reliable, effective way of "protecting children" is education. but people don't want to hear that because they don't actually care about protecting children, they care about protecting a mythologised ideal of innocence

Look, pal, when I say "fanfiction does not have the cultural reach to be able to change social perceptions of controversial topics"
what I mean is "if Game of Thrones could not manage to normalize incest, a handful of shipcest fics on AO3 with 50 kudos each sure aren't going to manage to normalize it!"
And you know that. In your heart you know it.

Tired of explaining to my college peers that yes, actually art history is essential knowledge for anyone who is ever in charge of designing concept art for pretty much anything.

I know I couldn't handle having kids but if I was left in charge of some, I'd take them to the park to feed ducks. Not bread though, you shouldn't feed that to ducks. We're feeding them lettuce. Let the ducks going apeshit over lettuce show the kids that lettuce is actually awesome. When they go home, their parents are baffled by the fact that the kids are now willingly eating salad. In the most horribly animalistic fucked up way possible.
