5 money-saving tips for truckers

It’s not easy being a truck driver, but it’s even harder being a skint one. The issue of measly wages aside, life on the road can be expensive.

For example, motorway services charge far more for a bacon butty than any other retailer because they have a captive audience.

Which is fine if you and your family are on your way back from visiting aunty Bev and fancy a break and a little something to eat. But it’s not fine if you’re a professional truck driver, who spends god knows how many hours a week on the road, and you fancy a break and a little something to eat.

Being a trucker might be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are five truck driving tips to help you reduce your expenses and keep more of your hard-earned cash in the bank.

1 Make a budget

I know, easier said than done. I’ve tried to do this many times with varying success. The easiest way to get started is to set yourself a weekly budget and then write down everything you spend over seven days. See if you can keep within budget. If not, work out what you can cut back on. If you like to snack (who doesn’t?) then take some with you rather than buying en route.

2 Make the most of truck stops

It’s true that not all truck stops are made equal, but they all offer at least something of use. Fill up your water bottle, use the WiFi to catch up on WhatsApp, and have a shower if you can. Plus, lots of truck stops offer discounts and reward programmes, so get that card stamped and start saving!

3 Limit spending on food

No one eats out twice a day – at least, no one normal. Save money by buying and preparing your own meals. The occasional restaurant meal is fine, just don’t make it a habit.

4 Be organised

When you’re away from home for long periods of time it pays to be organised. Bills that are sent to your home can get missed – and can easily rack up late payment fees. Avoid the hassle and go paperless. Pay outstanding bills on your phone to make sure payments are made on time.

5 Get lots of exercise

Perhaps not the first thing you think about when it comes to saving cash, but exercise can definitely help. Firstly, it can help with the snacking – going for a walk gives you something to do and stops you eating because you’re bored. Secondly, the healthier you are, the less health issues you tend to face. Having to take time off work because of illness is no good for anyone’s wallet.
