Diana and Anne should have ended up together in Anne with an E.
The arc of their relationship feels like a romantic one, their individual character arcs fit in with themes of trying to navigate a hetero-normative world as a queer person, and the characters have far more chemistry with each other than with their male love interests.
I know that Diana and Anne as a fan ship is a popular thing in other adaptations of the story, but in an adaptation that is so clearly trying to make the story feel more relevant in a modern world, the opportunity feels especially missed.
For all the show tries to add diversity, adding new LGBT characters instead of having Anne and Diana be gay just felt like a coward move to me.
And I know a lot of people would prefer that writers create new characters as representation instead of changing existing ones, but idk, in this case at least I strongly disagree. Maybe things would be different if Anne and Gilbert’s romantic arc had stronger writing but, as is, the show would be better off story-wise if Diana had been the romantic interest instead.
That’s just my opinion though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gilbert's Letter To Anne From His Voyage
Dear Anne,
It is is very nice to hear from you. I never expected to receive a letter from you (or anybody) especially here in Port of Spain, Trinidad. You did some excellent sleuthing, thanks for finding me. You'd make a good detective. I am enjoying the seafaring life very much. My shipmate Sebastian was born and raised here on the Island and has taken it upon himself to show me around. I have enjoyed meeting the locals and trying their foods. Other than that, I have just been working hard.
The news of the gold is very exciting, I can only imagine the commotion it must have caused. Currently, I have no plans to return to Avonlea, even if there's gold on my property. I figure it will still be there if and when I return. For now, my trip will continue indefinitely. I would like to see you again someday but I can't imagine it will be anytime soon. I hope you understand, as you know my father wanted me to see the world, so I am!
Please send my warmest regards to everyone in Avonlea.
Sincerely,
Gilbert Blythe
