I’ll agree that Kagha would make a fun companion, but she isn’t going to learn to be a better druid that way, if she still truly does want to be a druid. She can learn to be a better (or worse hehe) person tagging along, but being a good person isn’t the end-all-be-all of druidry. No other companion is going to teach her druidry. Jaheira barely cares about the curse - she’s only here for Ketheric and the absolute.

Which leads me to: I’ll never agree Halsin should be replaced by anyone. He is the one and ONLY character that cares about the curse, and the only one who can lift it. Act 2 is the only timeframe he can do so. Art is how you find Thaniel - and Art without the protections of those in Last Light is going to be another dead body in a sea of dead bodies. Art taken along with them to help save one of their own means Art never recovers - and Halsin never meets him. For the land to heal, Halsin needs to go with the team.

And it’s not a bad thing that Halsin leaves when he does with our team. The wounds were already made, the shadow Druids did their damage as well. Only 3 Druids still respect and trust Halsin. If he came back and acted like nothing happened, like he knows best and barks out orders to fix the circle, the wounds are only going to keep festering - doubly so if the shadow Druids aren’t revealed. He wasn’t a good leader before - he did his best, but he wasn’t ready, he was traumatized with no support, and that was already festering amongst the others. Him staying would simply make it all worse. He would not get better - the grove would not get better. The grove does need a fresh start - a new leader they don’t have poor opinions of. Someone that is actually meant for leadership and can handle it - and is ready for such a position.

Also: Kagha and Halsin banter would be so much fun

Probably not a super popular opinion, but I kinda wish we'd taken Kagha as a companion in BG3 rather than Halsin. The quest to help her come to her senses is missable and fuck-upable, but so is Minthara's recruitment, so I see no problem there.

Like, think about it. Halsin is a very steady person with real responsibilities to tend to in a grove that has just been through a traumatic, polarizing series of events. He should not be swanning off with you on some fuckass quest.

But Kagha? She's just been thoroughly cowed and lost everything she had. What better time to go on a journey that Halsin hopes might fix her, but, depending on choices, could also easily make her worse? She also fits much more with the general vibe of the party as a band of fuckups with the potential to be terrible but also the capacity to be better than what their circumstances and/or worst moments have made them.

There is something uniquely annoying about how those cute and/or amusing clips that start off seeming like just a video then go into “oh, haha, it’s not real but that’s a cute idea!” have gone from

“Someone put an absolutely stupid amount of time into making this look how it does for such a short video for a few laughs! That’s great!”

To

“Oh. It’s ai. Never mind.”

Because I know there are still people making those clips by hand. It’s their thing, or even just a one-off idea by someone that has that experience.

Can I offer a reframe of the common "write the shitty first draft" advice? I like that advice a lot but I think the way it's often presented bounces off a lot of people and activates shit that does not help writing happen.

I think of the first draft as an armature.

If I was making a beautiful bronze statue, I would need to make a clay model first. And, depending on the shape, before I even got out my clay I would need to get some good thick wire and create a basic shape for the clay to adhere to, so it doesn't all fall down. Once I have this essential 3D wire frame, I can start building and subtracting and refining.

But if I try to refine on just clay, it won't have enough of a core to hold it up. I'll sculpt a beautiful hand only to have the whole arm fall off and go smush.

The armature isn't the sculpture. It is the frame you build the sculpture around.

The first draft isn't the novel, it's a sort-of-novel-shaped thing that will hold up everything you build and beautify later.

Write the armature draft. Try to make it a good armature, instead of trying to make it a good novel before it's ready.
