The best part about NanaHachi isn’t their "pink x punk" aesthetic, or the "opposites attract" trope. Those things are good, but they’re just the icing on the cake.

The real heart of that ship is the yearning, the mutual obsession they both have — expressed differently, but equally intense and strong. It’s their relationship being at the center of the story, and even though they’re "technically not canon", it’s still so much deeper and more meaningful than any of their romantic dynamics with men.

It’s the chemistry between them, immediate and palpable from the very first moment they met.

It’s "we weren’t even married, but somehow now we’re divorced" energy.

They have SO MUCH going on emotionally, and to me, it’s the ship of dreams.

Funny thing is, I rarely feel the urge to ship the typical shounen “protagonist x deuteragonist” mlm dynamics, and I usually roll my eyes when I see essays "here's why orange-haired dude and black-haired dude are hidden canon, the author just couldn’t make it obvious because of homophobia". But with NanaHachi, I’m exactly like that. They’re canon to me, and I want to write essays about them being in love.

(and honestly, if you compiled everything they’ve said and thought about each other, the list would be way more compelling abd impressive than for most shonen fanon yaoi ships — and it would be very, very, very long, too)
