What Is Ableton Live 10 Lite?

Ableton Live 10 Lite is a basic, stripped down edition of the full Ableton Live 10 Standard and Ableton Live 10 Suite editions. The difference between the basic and full editions comes down to functionality. More specifically, Ableton Live 10 Lite has a limited array of synthesizers, plugins, miscellaneous effects and sounds to choose from.

The 4 Different Ableton Editions

Ableton Live 10 Suite – The full version: all software instruments, plugins, sound packs. No limitations or restrictions.

Ableton Live 10 Standard – The full version: most software instruments, plugins and sound packs. Some restrictions or limitations.

Ableton Live 10 Intro – Like the Lite edition: Intro is also a basic edition. In fact, the differences between Lite and Intro are so incremental that it’s not worth considering purchasing Intro. Just go straight to one of the full editions if you ever decide you want an Ableton Live Lite upgrade.

Ableton Live 10 Lite – Similar to the full editions but with less of everything. Despite Ableton Live 10 Lite being the inferior version overall, it’s still incredibly versatile and powerful. You could still produce records with just this version.

Installation

Before you download a version of Ableton Live 10 Lite, please check the system requirements: Games monopoly.

Basically, make sure your computer’s operating system is up to date and that you have enough space on your internal hard drive to install the software.

Installation & MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)

Along with your edition of Ableton, you’ll also need a MIDI controller to interact with the software and program/play music with.

A MIDI controller (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is any hardware that transmits or receives data to and from a DAW – sounds complicated and sophisticated but it’s not.

In simple terms, a MIDI controller is just a pad or mini keyboard with extra buttons that you plug into your computer to trigger sounds and perform live with – that’s all! Learn more about MIDI controllers by clicking on it above!

Authorise Your Ableton Live Lite Software

At this point, open up Ableton Live 10 Lite on your computer and you’ll be prompted to authorise the software.

I recommend authorising your edition of Ableton Live 10 Lite for 2 reasons:

It will allow you to save your work.

It will enable you to export your songs and productions.

So, authorising your Ableton Live 10 Lite is a very important step.

To do this you would need to purchase a license from Ableton, which comes in the form of a serial number. Fortunately, this serial number comes free with a lot of controllers already, so all you need to do is purchase a MIDI controller.

Note: Make sure you purchase a controller that includes an Ableton Live 10 license.

Ableton Account

During the installation and authorisation process, you’ll most likely be prompted to create an Ableton account. It’s worth creating an account as it keeps all your Ableton licenses in one place. It also serves as your own cloud storage system for Ableton products. Such as additional Ableton Live Lite plugins, sounds and instruments.

Note: For any readers who already have MIDI controllers, chances are you’ll find an Ableton Live Lite free license in your controller’s original packaging.

Finding The Perfect MIDI Controller

When choosing a controller, keep your musical background and what you hope to create in mind. For example, if you’re big into beat making, the Launchpad or AKAI MPD218 are great choices. They have a simple pad grid layout that makes it easy for “finger drumming” and for use with Ableton’s Live performance mode (Session View).

If you’re a piano/keys player, go for a MIDI controller with a keyboard that has multiple octaves, like the Launchkey 49.

I recommend a controller that includes a pad grid and a keyboard. That way you’ll have one piece of hardware for all music production purposes. It also means less clutter in your studio.

Once you’ve got your MIDI controller ready and your Ableton edition open on your computer. Connect your controller to your laptop using the provided USB cable. Ableton should recognise your controller and make any configurations automatically.

If for some reason the controller is not working right away, you’ll need to set up the MIDI controller manually. It’s very easy.

Audio Interface Setup

If you’re going to be working with raw audio, recording acoustic instruments like vocals or acoustic guitar for example, you’ll need to make sure your audio interface is communicating with Ableton Live 10 Lite.

Modern technology has increased audio hardware quality overall and made it inexpensive to acquire. You’ll have no trouble finding an audio interface that suits your budget.

Before buying an interface, you need to have a rough idea of what you want to record with it. For example, if you just want to record an electric guitar or vocalist, go for a straightforward interface like a Scarlett Solo. It has a single D.I. (Direct Input) and Audio input. If you want to record a live band however, you’re going to need multiple inputs.

To set up your interface to work with Ableton, make sure your interface drivers are installed. Next, in Ableton, go to preferences > audio > go to “Audio Input Device” and from the drop-down menu, select your interface. Then go to “Audio Output Device” and from the drop-down menu select your preferred output.

You’re all set! Now, let’s actually get into using Ableton Live Lite.

How To Use Ableton Live 10 Lite

Ableton is unique from other DAWs, primarily because it has two different modes, referred to as “Arrangement view” and “Session View”.

Arrangement View

This is the classic layout that you’ll see in most, if not, all DAWs. It’s the composing, recording and arrangement UI (user interface). This is where you see your audio or MIDI being recorded, where you’ll edit audio, midi and arrange your productions.

Session View

This is the Live performance mode. When you see producers and bands on stage with laptops, there’s a fair chance they’re using Ableton’s session view.

This mode allows you to take your mixed and mastered music on to the stage and manipulate it any way you like.

The idea behind this is that, whilst on stage, using your controller(s) of choice, you can launch loops of audio known in the Ableton world as “clips”.

Session view is a feature that puts the Ableton DAW ahead of its competitors. It’s unique to Ableton and one of it’s selling points.

Note: Shortcut for Mac and PC – switch between the Arrangement and Session view by pressing the Tab key.

MIDI And Audio Tracks

To create music with your MIDI controller or record audio you’ll have to create a channel or “track” for each. If you create a MIDI track, you’ll only be able to play MIDI instruments or use MIDI effects from the sound library located on the left of the DAW.

Similarly, if you create an audio track, you’ll only be able to play/record raw audio or use audio plugins for that track.

To play and record music, select the appropriate track (MIDI or audio) “arm” it by clicking the small “clock” icon, located at the bottom of the track channel.

At the top of your Ableton Session you’ll find a menu bar with the play, stop and record (the circle) icons.

That’s it. That’s all you need to know to start tinkering with Ableton Live 10 Lite.

Start making music immediately. Get your hands dirty. The more often you get stuck trying to do something, the more often you will get unstuck solving the initial problem and the faster you’ll learn.

Youtube, Google and Social Media are your friends. It’s safe to say that you can find a solution to any Ableton problem with a quick Google search. Similarly, there are tens of thousands of Ableton tutorials on Youtube, for beginners to advanced. Join Facebook groups and Reddit subreddits etc. Take advantage of the online community.

Shortcuts

Shortcuts will be your saving grace when learning how to use Ableton software. You’ll become a pro in no time. They speed up your workflow immensely and will compliment your outbursts of inspiration. Seriously, there’s nothing worse than being inspired to try a new musical idea and it taking 5 minutes to execute…because you don’t know or can’t remember a short cut. Start Small

Don’t purchase any of the advanced editions until you’re comfortable with the Lite version, or at least know that you’re going to commit to using Ableton frequently. The full editions are expensive for multiple reasons: they are far more powerful and harder to manage.

Got a question for you all about the ableton software. As we all know plenty of people pirate audio and program software all the time. Ableton is obviously heavily pirated. So, as we know a lot of famous producers get caught using pirated or cracked plugins and software. Does doing so cause any degradation to the final product? Symptoms

When you try to create an Outlook profile or connect to a Microsoft Office 365 mailbox, you're continually prompted for credentials while the client displays a 'trying to connect..' message. If you cancel the credentials prompt, you receive the following error message:

This issue can occur if the Logon network security setting on the Security tab of the Microsoft Exchange dialog box is set to a value other than Anonymous Authentication.

Resolution

Note

Microsoft Outlook 2016 and some recent builds of Outlook 2013 are not affected by this issue. Those versions have been updated to prevent the problem that is described in the 'Symptoms' section. These versions have the Logon network security setting disabled or removed from the Microsoft Exchange email account settings.

EARLY MONOPOLY GAME BOX DESIGNS 1935 - 1954

In 1935, Parker Brothers (PB) bought the rights to Monopoly from the 'inventor', Charles Darrow. This included Darrow's inventory of game parts. PB immediately began selling Monopoly games using the Darrow game parts. The first games Parker Brothers made were marked TRADE MARK. About 24,000 - 25,000 of these were maunfactured. This included a small number of the No 9 long box, very rare today. Parker Brothers applied for their own patent and the next group of their games stated PATENT PENDING or PATENT APPLIED FOR. Over 100,000 games were produced with this label. This statement was used for a while in 1935, but they discovered that there were other games very much like Monopoly already with patents. To protect their investment in Darrow's Monoply game, they decided to purchase the 1924 patent to the Landlords game and added that patent to their Monopoly games. This is patent 1,509,312. In the meantime, PB applied for their own patent on Monopoly. Their patent was issued on Dec 31, 1935, patent number 2,026,082. The new patent was added to the labels and games produced from 1936 - 1941 included both patents printed on the labels. When the 1924 patent expired in 1941, they dropped that number from the labels and used only the later patent issued to them. The phrase A PARKER TRADING GAME was added to the box tops in 1937. Parker Brothers had an office in London and included this city on the labels of their Monopoly games. That office closed in 1940 and London was replaced by Chicago. Dating early Monopoly games is done by the patent numbers and cities listed on the labels. Most early games can be dated within a few years using these label elements. Canadian Monopoly games were introduced in 1936 and closely resembled the U.S. games with the different varieties. The earliest known Canadian game is the No 9 White Box with legals stating CANADIAN (Trademark) REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR and CANADIAN PATENT APPLIED FOR, described below. These seem to be extremely rare. The game boxes pictured below show different label designs and kind of a chronology of manufacture. ~~Black and Blue Number 7 and Number 5 Boxes~~

This style box was a Darrow design and Parker Brothers just continued production using his design. Once Parker Brothers figured out Monopoly was taking off, they decided to offer a variety of different game options. One of the first things changed was the color of the box from black to blue. BLACK BOX Number 7 GAME 1935-1936

TRADE MARK BLACK BOX

The 'Trade Mark' game is the ultimate Parker Brothers Monopoly game for a collector. It is the first to be wholly manufactured by Parker Brothers and is very similar to the Darrow version, except for the addition of player pieces and a redesign of Darrow's black box. It was produced in limited numbers for only a few months in mid-1935. Estimates are that about 24,000 games might have been produced. The 'Trade Mark' version was also produced in the long box No 9 version. Sorry, no pictures of that one available (yet).

1935 PATENT PENDING BLACK BOX

The 'Patent Pending' game was Parker Brothers next version of Monopoly, made after the 'Trade Mark' games. Parker Brothers applied for a patent and added this to the games. By this time, Parker Brothers realised the game was going to be a hit so production was ramped up considerably. It is estimated that over 100,000 'Patent Pending' games could have been made. No Number 9 White Box games are known with the PATENT PENDING statement on the box.

1935 EARLY SINGLE PATENT BLACK BOX

This is the next version. After purchasing rights for Monopoly from Charles Darrow, research discovered another game very similar to Monopoly had been patented in 1924 by Elizabeth Magie. Parker Brothers quickly purchased that patent from Magie and put it on their Monopoly games just to cover their claim to the rights to the game. That patent number 1,509,312 replaced the Patent Pending labels. This group includes a very few No. 9 white box games where games already printed 'Trade Mark' had this patent added as an overprint. As far as I know, less than a dozen of these game boxes exist today. (VIEW HERE)

1936 DUAL PATENT BLACK BOX

On Dec 31, 1935, Parker Brothers was issued a patent for Monopoly, patent 2,026,082. Almost immediately, very early in 1936, this new patent was added to the Magie patent on all Monopoly games, replacing the single Magie patent. These patents also appeared on the several new varieties introduced by Parker Brothers throughout 1936. These patents remained on all Monopoly games until 1941 when the Magie patent expired and was removed. BLUE BOX Number 5 & 7 GAME 1936 - 1952

1936 was a busy year for Parker Brothers and their Monopoly game. They produced 1.8 million copies of the game and introduced several different new versions of the game. The Number 7 game box was changed from black to blue. Also, Parker Brothers was issued their own patent for Monopoly on Dec 31, 1935 and they wanted the world to know about it, so they printed that on these game boxes.

Late in 1936, Parker Brothers realized that Monopoly was going to be their best seller and drafted a marketing plan to promote the game. Someone came up with the phrase 'A PARKER TRADING GAME' and added that to game boxes late 1936. By early 1937, all Monopoly games included this wording. The words 'MADE IN USA' were added at the bottom of the box.

Another promotional idea was to introduce the Number 5 game, pretty much the same as the Number 7 game, except there were 8 player pieces instead of 7 AND it cost 50c more. They printed these changes on the first Number 5 game boxes. Also, Parker Brothers sold licenses to sell Monopoly to a Canadian and a British company in 1936. They added that bit of information to the legals statement.

1936 Number 5 DUAL PATENT REG GREAT BRITAIN & CANADA

Didn't take long for Parker Brothers to realize raising the price of their game in the middle of the Great Depression was a bad idea, so the game went back to $2.00 and the promotional printing was removed, though Monopoly was still their best selling game.

1937-1939 DUAL PATENT LONDON

By 1937, the bit about being reg in Great Britain and Canada had been removed and 'A PARKER TRADING GAME' took a prominent position in the legals line and was printed in bold text. This is about the most common variety of 1930s Monopoly.

1940 DUAL PATENT CHICAGO

In 1940, Parker Brothers closed their office in London and removed the city from the box. This was replaced by Chicago. This is a very hard to find variety, with Chicago AND the dual patent because the Magie patent (1,509,312) expired in 1941 and had to be removed, so this version was only printed in 1940.

In 1951, 'A PARKER TRADING GAME' was replaced with 'PARKER BROTHERS TRADE-MARK NAME FOR IT'S REAL ESTATE TRADING GAME'. As far as I can tell, this was the last version of the Number 7 game. It was discontinued in 1952 and was wholly replaced by the Number 8 Popular Edition as the only small box game being made.

The NEW EDITION game was Parker Brothers first new label design. There are 2 versions of this game, the brown box and black box versions. The brown box version was first, but didn't last very long before Parker Brothers chose to go with the black box version. I believe Parker Brothers found the brown boxes were too hard to come by. The New Edition games are very hard to find. On Ebay, only 1 in 20 New Edition games are the brown box version, and the matching brown boards are even harder to find. Also, only about 1 in 20 of the games offered with this label say New Edition, the rest say A PARKER TRADING GAME. Conclusion - the black box and board is scarce, the brown box version is very scarce, and the brown New Edition board is rare.

Some believe production of this game with the metal player pieces was suspended during WWII and this box, with the metal player pieces removed from the label and wooden play pieces added to the game, was a concession to the shortage of strategic materials/metals. When production of games with metal play pieces resumed after the war, it included a different style cannon than the one pictured on the label, and also a different version of the car.

No 6 - LATE PATENT (1946) 'REG.'

After the war, metal for game tokens was available and the old token pictures were once again added to the box tops. Problem was, the molds used to make the cannons were not available and it was replaced with a more modern howitzer style cannon and the shoe was replaced with a cowboy on a rearing horse. The older style car now has a driver, too.

Parker Brothers chose to make yet another version of Monopoly, the POPULAR EDITION, game designation Number 8. This was offered along with the Diamond $ boxes and the first Blue Boxes. This version originated with the same small sized boxes as the other 2 types. A lot of thought went into the design of this box. It was made from 1936-1954. The first of these had a green border. 1936-1939 Dual Patent, London

This was the first version of the Popular Edition. It had both the Magie (1,509,312) and the Parker Brothers (2,026,082) patents and included London in the list of cities. In addition, it had 'NUMBER 8' game designation was printed on the box, letting folks know this was a different version of Monopoly. This configuration was used until 1940.

1940 Dual Patent, Chicago

In 1940, Parker Brothers dropped London from the list of cities and added Chicago. Not much else was changed.

1951-1952 Single patent, Chicago

In 1941, the early Magie patent expired and it was removed from the legal description. Also, the game designation 'NUMBER 8' was removed. In 1949, the REG U.S. PATENT OFFICE statement was changed to REGISTERED IN U.S. PATENT OFFICE. In 1951, 'PARKER BROTHER'S TRADE MARK NAME FOR ITS REAL ESTATE TRADING GAME'. These modifications are present on this box. Also, in 1951, Parker Brothers introduced a new version of the Popular Edition with a red trimmed box. They were sold along side the green box versions.

1953 (1) Patent obscured with 'moustache'.

The Parker Brothers patent (2,026,082) expired on Dec 31, 1952 and they were no longer allowed to use that number on their games, but there was still a significant inventory of box labels already printed up with that number. They decided to reprint a 'moustache' over the expired patent and use them anyway. These are a bit hard to find, though not impossible. The first batch made in 1953 used these labels until they could get the revised labels printed up.

As early as 1936, Parker Brothers had sold licenses to sell Monopoly in other countries. The first were in Great Britain to John Waddington Printing and Canada to the Copp-Clark Company. Then John Waddington sold a license to John Sands in Australia and others. Monopoly became very popular world wide. Canadian Monopoly games pretty much followed the Parker Brothers game designs, using the same box and board designs, and Atlantic City street names for properties. The British games had completely different game designs and used London street names for properties. Australia used the British game designs and properties. Parker Brothers sold a license to manufacture and sell Monopoly games in Canada to Copp-Clark in late February, 1936. Copp-Clark immediately applied for a Canadian patent for the game. In November, 1936, the Canadian patent for Monopoly was approved. After that time, games were labeled with the Canadian patent 362,124. However, described here is an even earlier Canadian form of Monopoly in the white box. Shows CANADIAN PATENT APPLIED FOR and CANADIAN (Trademark) REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR on the game box, instructions, and game board, with reference to the early Parker Brothers dual American patents. This game with these legals is highly collectible! PLEASE NOTE: I saw another White Box Canadian Monopoly game offered on Ebay recently with Patent Applied For on the game board. The rest of the game parts had the usual Canadian patent and registration numbers.

Monopoly is an American television game show based on the board game of the same name. The format was created by Merv Griffin and produced by his production company, Merv Griffin Enterprises.

Monopoly aired as a summer replacement series on ABC along with Super Jeopardy!, a special tournament edition of Griffin's quiz show. Monopoly premiered on June 16, 1990, and aired following Super Jeopardy! for twelve consecutive Saturday nights until September 1, 1990.

Former Jeopardy! contestant Mike Reilly was chosen to host the series, with Charlie O'Donnell as announcer. Three separate women, Kathy Davis, Kathy Karges, and Michelle Nicholas, served as the co-host/dice roller.

Gameplay(edit)

First round(edit)

Three contestants played, each represented by a color (red, gold, and green).

In the first round, the players attempted to take control of the eight groups of colored properties on a giant Monopoly board. To do so, they had to solve crossword-style clues. The first letter of each answer was given to the players, and each side of the four-sided board, referred to as 'blocks' (with the block containing the five properties between the Go to Jail corner and 'GO' referred to as the 'high rent district'), had a different starting letter for clues. Each clue was a toss-up, and answering correctly won money equal to the value of the property, from $60 for Mediterranean Avenue to $400 for Boardwalk. Answering incorrectly deducted that value from a player's score. In the event that all three players failed to answer a clue, the property value was cut in half and another clue was read.

Each color group, referred to as a monopoly, had to be controlled by one of the players before play moved on to another. Once a player controlled a monopoly, the total monetary value of its properties was added to his/her score. The lowest monopoly value was $120, which was for Mediterranean and Baltic Avenues. The highest was $920, for the three-property monopoly consisting of Pacific, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania Avenues.

If the properties in a monopoly ended up under the control of multiple players, a series of toss-up clues were played between them to determine ownership. A player who owned two properties in a group of three had to give one correct answer in order to take full control, while the player who owned the third had to give two. If all three players each owned one property, the first to give a correct answer challenged one opponent and took over the property of the other, and the remainder of the showdown followed the two-player format. An incorrect answer on the initial toss-up forfeited that player's property, which was then awarded to one of the others through a second toss-up. In the case of the Mediterranean/Baltic and Park Place/Boardwalk monopolies being split between two players, the first to answer a clue correctly took control.

Big Money Round(edit)

During the commercial break following the completion of the first round, the players used the money they had earned to build houses and hotels on their properties. These cost $50 and $250 respectively, regardless of the properties' position on the board, and players had to build evenly within a color group. The number of houses/hotels on a property determined the amount of its rent, which was used as the value of its clues.

Once the players' construction purchases had been revealed and the corresponding cost deducted from their scores, the Big Money Round began. An indicator light started at 'GO' and moved clockwise around the board, according to the total of two oversized dice rolled by the show's hostess. Every player received a $200 bonus whenever the indicator light passed or landed on 'GO.'

If a property was landed on, O'Donnell called out its rent value and Reilly read a clue to the player who owned it. A correct response added the rent value to his/her score. A miss incurred no penalty but allowed either of the opponents to buzz in under the same rules as the first round, with an incorrect answer deducting from that player's score.

Squares other than properties affected the gameplay as follows:

Utilities (Electric Company and Water Works): a tossup clue was asked, worth $100 times the total on the dice.

Railroads: if the indicator light landed on one of the four railroads, players got the chance to 'ride' the particular railroad to a monopoly and initiate a 'hostile takeover'. A tossup was asked, and the first player to answer the clue correctly chose one of his/her opponents' monopolies to take over.(1) The indicator light then moved to the first property in the chosen monopoly, and the player trying to take it over had to answer a series of clues unopposed, one for each property. Every correct answer advanced the indicator light to the next property in line. If the player answered all the clues correctly, he/she won control of the monopoly; its combined value was added to his/her score, and any houses or hotels built on it became his/her property. A wrong answer ended the takeover attempt and the player had to pay the corresponding rent to the owner of the monopoly, based on where the indicator was when the wrong answer was given.

Chance and Community Chest: a card was drawn from the appropriate deck and its instructions (bonuses, fines, movement) were followed.

Tax Spaces: landing on Income Tax deducted 10% from every player's score, while Luxury Tax deducted $75.

Free Parking: a tossup was asked and the first player to answer correctly won $500, plus all money collected in taxes/fines since the last correct Free Parking response.

Go To Jail: if the indicator landed on this space, it moved to the 'In Jail' space and each player lost $250.

The second round was played until time was called. At this point, all houses and hotels were sold back to the bank at their original purchase price and the money was credited to the players who owned the properties, regardless of who had originally built them. The player with the highest total won the game, kept his/her money, and advanced to the bonus round.

Bonus Round ('Once Around the Board')(edit)

The champion tried to complete one full clockwise circuit of the board within five rolls while staying out of jail. The contestant first chose four spaces – one each on the maroon/orange and red/yellow sides, and two on the green/blue side – to become Go to Jail spaces. The original Go to Jail space remained on the board, for a total of five Go to Jail spaces.

The champion started at 'GO' and rolled the dice to move around the board. The contestant could quit and take $100 per space passed after each successful roll. Rolling doubles awarded an extra roll. The champion won $25,000 for passing 'GO' without running out of rolls, or $50,000 for landing on 'GO' exactly. If the champion landed on a Go to Jail space at any time, the round ended and he/she forfeited the money. The contestant still won $100 for each space passed if all rolls were exhausted and the contestant failed to pass 'GO' without landing on a 'Go to Jail' space.

Merv Griffin created the series and served as executive producer. Monopoly was paired with Super Jeopardy! for its 12-week run on ABC.

Coincidentally, host Mike Reilly competed on the television game show Jeopardy! in 1989.(2) Reilly later worked as a waiter before being selected a year later by producer Merv Griffin to perform as a contestant on the pilot for Monopoly.(3) After the pilot with Peter Tomarken as host was taped, Reilly was selected as host.(4) The pilot was produced for syndication, but could not gain clearances - likely due to the use of a female dwarf to play 'Rich Uncle Pennybags'. Tomarken clashed with producers about the use of 'Rich Uncle Pennybags', calling it tasteless and comparing it to slavery.(5)

International version(edit)

A Welsh version of the show, hosted by Derec Brown aired on S4C for a brief period in 1992.

Apr 23, 2018 Thanks for that report. I didn't know that Quicken was not Intuit any longer. I was not able to upgrade to High Sierra with 2007. I too have been using it over twenty years and feared the loss of all that data.

I just up graded my mac to the high sierra 10.13.6. Prior to this upgrade I've been using an old version of quicken for mac that worked fine for me. With the mac upgrade my old quicken will not work. It looks to me that I have to buy the deluxe version because it will upgrade an old version.

I installed High Sierra on three computers. Two have moved on to Mojave; my Mac Mini is so old that it is stuck on High Sierra.

New Features of High Sierra

There is a new file system, called APFS. Installing High Sierra will reformat your storage if your machine has an SSD. This new file system has caused problems with some applications.

New graphic and video formats are supported, which will make smaller files.

Mail, Photos, Siri, and Safari have new interface features.

Should I Install High Sierra?

If your computer is working now, there is no urgent need to change your OS, until you want the new features, or continuing security updates.

Apple usually supports the current version and the previous version. Using an unsupported OS will still work, but if security problems are found in an unsupported version, Apple usually does not patch them.

Eventually, companies will write software that requires features of the latest Apple OS, and someday you may want to buy and use some of that software.

If your current Macintosh fails and you have to buy a new one, you'll end up migrating to High Sierra whether you were ready or not. This happened to me.

Installation Problems

Some users whose disk is encrypted with FileVault report that their attempt to install will not accept their unlock password. (Thanks to Marv Schaefer for this tip.) Another friend attempted to install High Sierra and ended up in a panic/reboot loop. It took many hours of Internet recovery to complete installation.

Users who have Fusion drives are having problems installing the system. APFS support is apparently incomplete.

A MacInTouch reader reported problems upgrading; when they finally got High Sierra installed, all their mail messages were missing, and application license data was lost.

Some users report that their attempt to install fails with the message 'macOS could not be installed on your computer' halfway through. Make sure you clone your hard disk before you start installing. Some users had trouble installing the Supplemental Update.

Migration Problems

I bought a new computer for a family member. The machine came with High Sierra. I used Migration Assistant to move files and settings from the old computer that was running El Capitan. Multiple problems ensued.

Trying to open some Adobe programs popped up an alert window that I needed to install the Legacy version of Java -- as expected. I clicked the 'More Info' button, which took me to a download page, and downloaded the software. Trying to open the .dmg file resulted in the alert 'the file is damaged and will not open.' I had to use Terminal to execute the command cd ~/Downloads; sudo xattr -d -r com.apple.quarantine *.dmg. Then I could open files and install Java.

It turned out that many files were marked with the 'quarantine' xattr and would not open. Subsequent file downloads and newly created files were all marked 'quarantine.' I finally did defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices LSQuarantine -bool NO to prevent further nonsense. Apple support was no help. They suggested rebooting, zapping the PRAM and resetting the SMC. I did more investigation and found that it's not the presence of the 'quarantine' xattr, but rather the specific bits in its value; deleting the quarantine attributes was not necessary. I have not figured out whether the wrong bits were on in the attribute, or if the quarantine checkeer was alarming incorrectly. For the moment I have left LSQuarantine turned off.

Several people in the MacInTouch forums suggested: do not use Migration Assistant to transfer applications.

iTunes would not work. It failed with the message 'The folder 'iTunes' is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.' Turned out that the iTunes folder on the old machine was located in /Users/Shared/Music and linked from iTunes. Migration changed the permissions on the iTunes folder when it copied it. I copied the folder to ~/Music and did chown -r user:staff * and that fixed it.

Opening Adobe Acrobat Pro X I after migration popped up a window advertising Acrobat Pro DC with buttons 'Buy Now', 'License this software', and 'Continue trial'. Look for an 'Advanced' button that you can click and then UNCHECK 'remove old versions' so the sneaky installer doesn't delete your working Acrobat. Acrobat XI Pro seems to work, but there is a notice that there will be no more support.

When I was setting up the new machine, my Brother B+W printer added easily. My Brother color printer did not: it added as a generic PCL printer. I visited the Brother website, hunted down my printer, downloaded the driver image, and installed it. Then I added the printer in ► System Preferences... Print&Scan, and it worked OK.

Apple software

Users reported that Mail.app randomly loses settings. A few users reported persistent Finder freezes.

Third party apps

Quicken 2007 will not make backup files on an APFS volume.

Illustrator and Photoshop have problems reported on High Sierra. If you have Creative Cloud, update to the latest CC versions and check for updated plugins. I migrated my CS5 versions to High Sierra, and they sort of work: can't use Suitcase with them any more, and some Illustrator features I never use are known to cause immediate crashes.

Some 32-bit applications will work under 10.13 but this is the last macOS to support them 'without problems.'

Installed MS Office 2016. Many things are different.

What you Should Do Now to Get Ready for High Sierra

Use ► App Store...%(marrow)%Updates to keep all Apple software up to date, including the OS.

Apply all free updates to other software you use.

Set up an external hard drive and use Time Machine.

Add more RAM if you can.

Fix damaged and duplicate fonts.

If you are running a version of Mac OS X earlier than Snow Leopard, you will have to install Snow Leopard first. You can buy an installer disc for Snow Leopard from Apple's web site for $20.

Who Can Update

Not everyone can use the new OS version.

Only fairly new Macs can run High Sierra. See the list online at the Apple web site that specifies what Mac models can run High Sierra. If your computer does not meet these requirements, stick with the latest Mac OS X you can run.

You need at least 2GB of memory, preferably more.

If you depend on PowerPC programs, the latest version of OS X that you can run is Snow Leopard, since Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, and High Sierra do not support Rosetta, the PowerPC emulator. See the Frequently Asked Questions section about High Sierra. In particular, pre-Lion Quicken, Microsoft Office 2004, and some features of Adobe CS3 will not run on High Sierra. (See Adobe article.) Stick with OS X 10.6.8a until you upgrade these applications. You could install VirtualBox (free) on your Mac, and install 10.6 into a virtual machine, and update it to 10.6.8a, and run your PowerPC programs under the emulated OS. I tried this, and it worked.

If you depend on the Classic environment to run Mac OS 9 programs from the 1990s, stick with OS X 10.4.

If you have a Mac with a PowerPC processor, High Sierra won't work on it. Stick with OS X 10.5.8.

You can't install High Sierra over an ancient version of OS X: Apple's license terms specify that High Sierra is only for Macs that have Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, or Sierra installed, and the installer enforces this restriction.

Old printers and scanners may not work if the manufacturer has not updated the driver software. Those with PowerPC or 32-bit drivers will not work.

Plan your install

When you decide to install High Sierra, do it carefully. You may find that there are issues that affect you: do your homework. Check MacInTouch to see if there are problems with macOS 10.13 that affect you.

Make sure you back up your entire disk before starting to install High Sierra. Preferably to more than one place.

Make a list of the hardware you depend on, and search the web to check that each device will work. Older printers and scanners can have issues.

Leave yourself enough time. Upgrading will tie up your computer for a big part of a day. Installing takes an hour or two, but then your computer will be very slow until it re-does the Spotlight index and does a big backup up to Time Machine.

Particular issues before upgrading

Currently, Adobe says that Illustrator and Photoshop CC do not work on High Sierra and they will fix them in a future version.

Adobe no longer sells regular application versions of Photoshop and Illustrator. Instead they rent you a Creative Cloud subscription. Stop paying, the apps stop working. They tell you that one advantage is that you'll get bug fixes and new features whenever they decide to release them. (There are a lot of tricky deals, initial teasers, different bundles. You could pay $20/app/mo or $600/yr for all CC apps. Adobe also sells Photoshop Elements as a non-cloud application for $70 one-time.)

Similar deal for Adobe Acrobat.. Acrobat Pro DC rents for $179/yr, for 2 users. (Acrobat XI Pro may still work on High Sierra.) You might be able to buy a lifetime copy for $449, but websites don't say how many computers are covered. If you search the web for replacement products, there are some listed. PC World suggests Nitro Pro 11, $160 lifetime for up to 10 users.

There are alternatives to Adobe products, such as much less expensive Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. There are also free programs such as Polarr Photo Editor and GIMP. With any of these replacements, you have to learn how to use new programs, and worry about compatibility.

Microsoft wants to rent you 'Office 365.' (Again there are multiple deals: for about $70/yr/computer you can get the whole suite. You can also buy non-cloud Office 2016 Home & Student for $150 one-time. This is what I did.)

Quicken 2007 (Lion update) sort of works on High Sierra; won't make a backup to an APFS volume. Since this is 32-bit software, it won't run on the macOS scheduled for 2019. Quicken wants to rent you Quicken 2018 for Mac for $35/yr. This is a show stopper for me.

Programs that will not be upgraded: Some device drivers: check with your device manufacturers. The free software CUPS drivers may work for some printers. Gutenprint was marked as incompatible.

Peripherals: Make sure your printers and scanners will be supported. Some manufacturers don't release updated drivers for their printers for months after a new OS X release.

Installing High Sierra

I updated a 2012 Mac Mini to High Sierra. Since the Mini does not have an SSD, the update did not install APFS. This install took about 3 hours.. it would have taken additional time to change the file system. Then I had to install High Sierra 10.13.4 and update various Apple software: this took 3 more hours.

Clean up and update software before installing.

(If your Mac is running a very old version of OS X, you must install Snow Leopard 10.6.8 first, in order to get a version of Apple App Store that can download High Sierra. Here is Apple's how to upgrade page.)

Download High Sierra from ► App Store...=>Updates. It is free. This downloads a large file, the High Sierra Installer, to your disk. You can create a bootable installer volume on a USB key using these instructions. (But see the TidBits article 'Previously Downloaded OS X Installers No Longer Work'.) Apple's license terms say you can update all your computers with one purchase.

Get the applications on your computer ready for 10.13: apply the latest fixes.

Delete junk files. Carefully.

Delete Safari, iTunes, and Firefox caches, so your backup will be faster.

If you have customized your desktop background or screensaver, write down your settings. Some Apple-provided pictures may not be available in the next version.. make a safe copy of anything you will want after upgrading.

Empty the Trash.

Clean up damaged and duplicate fonts.

If you use Apache, save a copy of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf.

If you installed modules via CPAN, Macports, or Fink, make a list of them. In a Terminal window, type perldoc perllocal | grep :: > cpan_modules.txt port -qv installed > macports_packages.txt

Have your software license keys handy in case you have to re-authorize products.

De-authorize Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

De-authorize your computer from iTunes.

Backup and prepare.

If you use MySQL, backup the database with mysqldump databasename > db.sql

BACK UP YOUR HARD DRIVE to an external disk. I used SuperDuper to clone my whole drive. Some cautious people make two backups.

If you installed a third-party Solid State Disk (SSD), check the manufacturer's website to see if you need to update its firmware to work with High Sierra.

If you are using an anti-virus product, disable it. Some anti-malware programs see the utility that converts HFS to APFS as malware, and prevent it from running. Since most anti-virus software is tightly integrated with the operating system, you may have to install a High Sierra-specific version of your software after installing High Sierra anyway.

If you connect your Mac to the network using WiFi, select ► System Preferences...=>Network=>Advanced and delete any WiFi networks you don't want to use. (I forgot to do this, and my computer connected to a very slow network, which slowed down my install.)

The best way to handle Macports is to uninstall all the old ports and reinstall after updating the OS. In a Terminal window, type sudo port -fp uninstall installed

Install

If you use a wireless mouse or keyboard, put in fresh batteries.

Set screen saver to NEVER, and turn off Time Machine.

Dismount and unplug or power off external drives.

Run the macOS 10.13 installer. If FileVault is enabled on your computer, the installer will ask for a password to unlock the disk. It will run for about 15 minutes, then reboot, then run for about an hour, then reboot again. (The 'time remaining' will show wildly varying estimates as the installer proceeds. Don't panic if you see a gray screen with '30 minutes remaining' for an hour. Just let it run.)

As the update finishes, it will ask you for your AppleID password.

If High Sierra asks you if you want to enable Desktop and Documents folder syncing to iCloud, the safest thing to do is to say NO. If you say YES, these folders will be backed up in iCloud and available on all devices, which you may not want, and saying YES may also enable 'Optimize Storage' which will delete files from your computer's drive if it gets too full. Adam Engst's TidBITS article on Optimized Storage is very helpful.

Select ► App Store... to update to latest versions of Apple software, then run it again to make sure all software is updated. (about another hour) If you just downloaded the OSX installer from the Apple Store, you will have the latest version of OSX, but this step may find additional application updates.

Do a 'smoke test' to verify that your computer is working OK. Make sure the applications you depend on are still working. Try out the applications from Apple that were updated with the OS. If you have trouble, restore your backup and go back to the old OS version.

Recover

When you attempt to re-authorize Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, or the first time you execute them, you may see an alert box that tells you that you have to install Java 6 first (even if you have Java 8 installed). Click 'more Info' and download and install the update. See above for a gotcha regarding the 'quarantine' switch.

Re-authorize your computer in iTunes.

Wait for Spotlight to finish indexing (may take several hours). Performance will suck till it finishes.

Turn on Time Machine and start your backup.

You don't have to repair disk permissions with Disk Utility any more. In fact, you can't; the option is gone.

Restart the computer. Often this speeds things up.

Post Install Tasks

Once you are satisfied that your computer works acceptably, and you are going to stay on High Sierra, you can make some adjustments.

If your computer seems slow or buggy, try zapping the PRAM.

If you have purchased applications that are OS version specific, like Cocktail, buy updates and install them.

Clean your font caches by issuing the Terminal command sudo atsutil databases -remove and restarting.

If FileVault was on, it will be on after upgrading. Check to make sure. In Fact, check all the System Preferences. Once in a while something is changed by an update.

In ► System Preferences...%(marrow)%Software Update%(marrow)%Advanced, do not check 'Install app updates from the App Store.' Decide whether to install updates individually. I accidentally installed an Xcode update for Catalina that broke my ability to build for Mojave. It is probably best not to install any updates automatically.

Customization

You will probably want to set up per-user customizations, such as your desktop background and screensaver. After each new OS generation this is something of an adventure; functions get renamed and moved around.

I really hate the CAPS LOCK key, so I disable it. In High Sierra, this is done by opening ► System Preferences...=>Keyboard=>Keyboard=>Modifier Keys and changing the action for CAPS LOCK to 'No Action.' (I had set this on Yosemite and it was carried over by the upgrade process... works for High Sierra too.)

In ► System Preferences...=>Keyboard=>Trackpad, I uncheck 'Scroll Direction: natural' .. it seems UNnatural to me after 30 years. (I had set this on Yosemite and it was carried over by the upgrade process... works for High Sierra too.)

I disable or silence most Notifications.

Security issues

Under High Sierra, Spotlight 'shows suggestions from the Internet, iTunes, App Store, movie showtimes, locations nearby, and more.' To do this, it sends your location and query to Apple servers. You may wish to change this if you are required to keep some information private. Change it in two places: uncheck 'allow Spotlight Suggestions' in ► System Preferences...=>Spotlight=>Search Results and uncheck 'Safari & Spotlight Suggestions' in ► System Preferences...=>Security&Privacy=>Privacy=>Location Services=>Privacy=>System Services=>Details.

Some kinds of security certificates are no longer accepted. These are the ones using SHA-1, which is deprecated.

Devices

Check that your printers work. If your printer will not work, you may be able to get it working by selecting ► System Preferences...=>Print&Scan, deleting the printer and adding the printer again: for some printers, this will trigger running ► App Store...=>Updates to get new printer software. For other printers, you will have to download the correct printer driver from the manufacturer's web site.

If you have a scanner, plug it in and power it on. Mine worked fine. If the scanner appears in ► System Preferences...=>Print&Scan, remove it, and add it again. For some scanners, this will invoke ► App Store...=>Updates to add a driver that will let you operate the scanner with Image Capture. For other scanners, you will have to download the correct scanner driver from the manufacturer's web site. If manufacturer-supplied software is not available, and Image Capture does not provide enough features, you may be able to get it working by purchasing and installing VueScan.

Programming Tools

In Terminal, type the command java. If you don't have Java 8 installed, this action will bring up a dialog box: click More Info to bring up the Oracle JDK installation page in a web browser, and trigger the installation of the Java 8 JDK from Oracle over the Internet. Java is needed for Eclipse and for other Mac applications, such as OpenOffice and some Adobe products, and VPN clients such as Cisco. Java is not dangerous, if you use it to run code you trust: using it to run web page animations has had some problems.

If you use your computer for programming, install the (free) Xcode Developer Tools by typing xcode-select --install in a terminal window, or by installing the whole Xcode package using the App Store. Then type sudo xcodebuild -license in a terminal window to accept the license.

MacPorts: see my instructions for MacPorts page. Basically the procedure is to list your ports and uninstall them before upgrade, install the OS, reinstall MacPorts, and reinstall your ports. Set PERL5LIB=/Users/myname/bin:/opt/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.26 or installs will fail with messages about variants.

MySQL:Version 8.0.1 appears to work on Sierra and High Sierra.

Perl/CPAN: Perl 5.26.2 is installed by MacPorts. See my instructions for CPAN.

Apache web server:

Apache 2.4.28 is provided with High Sierra, but is not automatically started and there is no System Preferences interface to enable it.

The new OS install will not carry over your old Apache customizations. diff /etc/apache2/httpd.conf against your saved copy and edit as necessary.

Start Apache using the terminal command sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist. The -w means make it permanent across restarts.

PHP 5.6.30 is shipped with the OS but disabled in httpd.conf, same version as for Sierra. I sometimes enable PHP in order to debug programs that will be deployed in safe environments on other computers. If you enable it, be aware of the risks of making PHP available on the Internet from your Mac, and track and install security updates.

Screen saver: if you patched the duration of a screen saver slide, as I did, you will have to reapply the patch.

High Sierra Observations

New Features and Changes

Many of the advertised features of High Sierra sound uninteresting or worse to me.

AFS file sharing will not work from an APFS drive. In ► System Preferences... Sharing, click on 'File Sharing' and 'Options', and check 'Share files and folders using SMB.' This will cause trouble if you are trying to share files with an old Mac.

Unsigned kernel extensions will not load.

Apparently there is a hidden way to repair permissions. Apple Support Note HT203538 suggests the Terminal command diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`.

The Photos app has been upgraded to 3.0. It adds better picture editing, and rearranges the controls and menus again. The 'Faces' feature of Photos works even worse than in Sierra: mystery meat navigation, no way to find Unnamed faces, no way to delete non-faces or don't care strangers.

Bugs/Gotchas in High Sierra

Gotcha on first boot: Firefox hung. Whether this was a new version of Firefox or an interaction with the new OS, it could not restore its old windows.

Gotcha on first boot: Screensaver could not find the Photos folders, until I started Photos and let it reformat the Photos Library, and then quit and restarted System Preferences.

Problem: On my 2012 Mac Mini, many operations are extremely slow. Perhaps this is because it has a hard drive instead of an SSD.

Keep a list of the software and devices you use and depend on, so you can check that they are supported.

32-bit programs

The next macOS version will probably release in Fall 2018. Apple has announced that this version of macOS will not support 32-bit software 'without compromise.' The next version won't do 32-bit at all. Start planning. To list the 32-bit programs on your system, you can execute this line in Terminal:
