today’s petty hill to die on: pearl prynne isn’t an “unnatural” or “unrealistic” depiction of childhood. she is just a slightly precocious kid with developmental, behavioral issues being raised by a single mother who loves her very much despite not really understanding the way her daughter’s mind works.
also, putting my personal interpretations of the story aside: YES pearl is a symbol, because the scarlet letter is an allegory & all the major characters are symbolic. but NO she is not “a symbol, not a real character” because that is not only untrue but also a deeply silly way of thinking about this type of story.
anyway, stan pearl prynne, i think she should get to bite people in the supermarket while her mom is busy trying to figure out which brand of cheese they can buy with WIC.

I choose to interpret the scarlet letter as a group full of autistic people coping with neurotypicals being literally anything but typical.
Hester I'm not too sure of but she's being shunned and typicals do that alot
