     “ I’m sure that somewhere out there, Mr. and Mrs. Washington just breathed a huge sigh of relief.” The lighter is taken -- confiscated -- and clicked a few times to light the flame. “ Just think, if we lit the whole house on fire then we wouldn’t have to worry about the cold.”

“Agh, jeez. Can you help me with these?      The ouija board -- in life,  Sam would have rolled her eyes      at the very notion. Now, she felt the faintest nudge of hope      upon seeing the board laid out on the table.  The fact that      they were even trying to    communicate was a good sign,      and when Sam reached out        she could almost feel the      wood of the slider beneath her fingers.   Now to wait for a      question, and hope she was able to give an answer.

the thing about sam’s death that i find interesting is that (iirc) she can’t be killed by/because of someone else? like no one else’s actions can lead to her death, it’s only if she herself doesn’t stand still and is killed by the wendigo. so she would never be a malicious spirit because she wouldn’t blame anyone else for her death. i said before that i could see her spirit being warped into some more malicious when it comes to josh since he “lured” them to the mountain but as a spirit not corrupted by the pain and confusion of her death she would honestly just try to help him (even though in his current condition seeing the ghost of one of his best friends would probably do more harm than good, i imagine that spirits don’t follow human logic and so she would try and probably make things worse unintentionally but since she now exists to try to help she wouldn’t be able to stop)

     Sam may have died in the lodge, but she did not vanish completely that fateful and terrible night. Given the violent nature of her death and the overwhelming emotions associated with that night Sam’s spirit was not able to move on. She does not linger as a punishment to those who survive -- the unfinished business which tethers her to this world is their happiness. With all of the guilt and sadness still plaguing the survivors Sam cannot bring herself to move on to whatever is next. So she stays, moving between her friends and doing whatever she can to comfort them. It takes her some time to get used to being a ghost, an existence which comes with new and challenging restrictions. Despite this Sam will do whatever it takes to ease her friends’ minds even in the smallest of ways, until she feels that they have reached a place of peace and she can finally move on.

In this verse, Sam will have difficulty communicating with the survivors. Contact is easier when the survivor is open to the contact, which means that Sam must first convince them that she is present and that she is not a malicious spirit come to haunt them. As the survivor becomes more open to her presence, her strength grows and she becomes capable of different acts. After establishing contact it it easier to move objects or project her spirit into an emotional aura, providing comfort. Only when the survivor fully accepts her presence is she able to make herself fully seen, though as their belief grows stronger she appears as a wisp of white smoke or a more human shaped form. Vocal communication beings in the form of quiet, disembodied echos to louder and more easily understood words. Sam can appear to a survivor multiple times and her form will vary between survivors depending on how many times she’s visited them and how much the individual accepts her presence.

     Death was nothing like the movies had made it out to be.      Moving even the smallest object was enough to drain whatever      reserves of energy Sam was able to access. Forget speaking      or touching a living body. It seemed slightly easier -- less of a      strain -- when the person was more open to her presence.

     Take Ashley, for example -- who had caled out to Sam, even if      she hadn’t meant to. Even the softest utterance of her name was      enough to make Sam more than simply a wisp of nothingness in      the air. Now she felt present -- more like herself and less like a      confused cacophony of emotions and sparse memories. The      first step towards actual contact with a living being then became      convincing the person to open up, without fear. The survivors had      experienced far too much of that.

     First, Sam tried to establish her presence. It was as loud of an      “I’M HERE” as she could manage at this point. She stood -- not      stood, existed? was present? -- behind Ashley. Poor, sweet      Ashley, sleepless Ashley, scared Ashley. Sam wanted to hold      her, tell her things were going to be alright -- and so it was that      caring energy that she tried to project now. Let Ashley feel even      the slightest bit of comfort, and Sam would take that as a good      start.
