why are trolls (part 2)
This could be indicative of: 1: A strong, traditional attachment to these places (which I see as unlikely, given that violating the "natural sanctity" of things is basically the Empire's whole deal) 2: A shared personal preference for the undeveloped caverns (again unlikely, since comfort is pretty far down the list of the Empire's priorities) 3: An actual physiological need for the natural cavernous environment for the process of egg-laying/hatching/pupation As you can likely tell, I consider the third option to be by far the most likely to be true. The natural world is no stranger to such things; subtle changes can sometimes cause great disruption in the life cycles of creatures, and so it is very possible that some physiological barrier prevents any major disruption in Troll brooding environments. This is a strong indicator that the very first Trolls emerged in Alternia's caverns, and developed within an environment where they would constantly be confronted by Lusii emerging from the depths of their home-caverns to spend time on the (likely comparatively resource-rich) surface. This is likely where the modern relationship between Trolls and Lusii finds its origins. Eventually, it would become evident that the best long-term food acquisition strategy would be for Trolls to leave the caverns under the cover of night to hunt and forage on Alternia's surface. In doing so, partnerships between Trolls and Lusii would become mutually beneficial; the Trolls could use their intelligence and tools to more efficiently acquire food, some of which would be shared with the Lusii in return for their protection from the threat of other Lusii, which could easily overpower a Troll in that unfamiliar environment. The turning point in Alternian pre-history would come with the invention of the Hive, something that would surely serve as an analogue to Humanity's Agricultural Revolution. After having spent enough time on the surface, Trolls would begin to develop techniques for creating shelters which could allow them to survive the Alternian daylight. THIS is what enables Trolls to become Alternia's dominant species. But hey, I'm just a weirdo on tumblr over-analyzing things :P

why are trolls? (part 1)
If you're anything like me (im so, so sorry if you are), then you probably have spent way too much of your precious human lifespan thinking about the intricacies of the Alternian ecosystem and the place of Trolls within it. As of the present day as seen in Homestuck and Hiveswap, Trolls have assumed a place roughly analogous to that of humanity in their planet's ecosystem despite the numerous significant differences between the two sapient species. The question that I'm looking to conjure up an answer to is: why? What is the evolutionary path that has led the Trolls to their present state of being? What I've landed on is this: Alternia is, as we know, a very dangerous world. For some reason or another, life on the surface of the planet has always been especially harsh. It's no wonder, then, that it would foster such a wide variety of subterranean life. Among Alternia's "diverse and terrifying subterranean monster population" are those that we know today as Lusus Naturae, the creatures which in Alternia's present day serve as the symbiotic guardians of young trolls. One thing that particularly piqued my interest about Lusii is that they are described as being "subterranean" creatures, and yet they feature an adaptation- their luxurious white coats- which protects their bodies from the threat of the Alternian sun (as mentioned in Friendsim). The implication of this is that while Lusii *originate* in Alternia's cavernous depths, they have evolved to spend at least some portion of their lifespan on the planet's surface. Were this to be true, it would mean that at some point in any Lusus' life, it must make its journey to the surface and cross through the mouth of one of an Alternian cavern. And what creatures do we know to make their homes in such an environment? Trolls! Well, sort of. Despite being an advanced space-faring species which has already exhibited both the will and desire to implement new technology to "streamline" the reproductive process (re: place it more firmly in the hands of the fascist Alternian state), the Alternians seem more than content with the continued use of natural caverns for the purposes of their brooding caverns rather than choosing to develop specialized spaces for the purpose.

troll law
So i've been thinking about the Alternian legal system right. Like most things on that hell-world, it's pretty arbitrary and violent. Basically if I remember it all correctly, two Legislacerators make a big show out of arguing over your innocence before you are inevitably declared guilty and then fed to His Honorable Tyranny. So why the trial if the accused is already considered to be guilty from the start? I figure that the objective of the prosecution is not to convince His Honorable Tyranny of the defendant's guilt, but to convince the *crowd* of their guilt. In this way, the system serves to manufacture the consent of the crowd for the execution of enemies of the state. Also, how the heck do local Alternian courts work? Do they HAVE local courts, or just one really big court for the important crimes? It would kind of make sense I guess to suppose that most Alternian criminals are never tried, so I think we'll go with that for now.

howdy tumblr
*dusts off this old blog* Welp, twitter's gone to shit and I don't plan on going back, so I've decided to finally start using this tumblr I made a few years ago. I've wanted to write for a long time, but between my ADD and staying busy with college I'd never actually started trying. So, I plan on using this blog to talk Homestuck, worldbuilding, OCs, and combinations thereof.
