rape is a misogynistic hate crime. my rape specifically was an expression of my rapist’s anger at women in general, he expressed to me explicitly that he was angry at women for rejecting him, he was angry at women for not being sexually available to him and “leading him on” and for “the way we act.” it wasn’t purely sexual or something that can be explained through loneliness. even the way men talk about their own loneliness is tied to rape culture, they’re expressing that they feel they’ve been denied access to women’s bodies and they want us to feel pity for them while also being afraid of them and trying to appease them. atp i think there’s an implicit threat in the way people talk about how we need to “address male loneliness” by helping men attract women or allowing sex work to exist. there’s a threat that if they’re not appeased by women these men will become violent rapists.

i know this is an old post OP, but i’m rewatching now and completely agree with this take.

it drives me crazy how carole was the most hated figure that came out of this show when the men were so much worse. the docuseries also seemed to intentionally twist things to make her look worse or comparable to people like joe or doc anttler. they tried to make it sound sinister for her to rely on volunteers for her sanctuary when it is a non profit. i read a post from someone who volunteered at her sanctuary, and everyone who volunteered at carole had a job and were financially stable enough to afford to work at a sanctuary a few weeks out of the year because they believed in the mission. it was not at all the same as doc or joe who were running for profit businesses based on exploiting desperate people.

we hear several times from doc and joe that the conditions at the sanctuary are as bad as at joe’s zoo, but this obviously isn’t true because she was passing safety inspections that joe wasn’t.

also i’ll reserve judgement on the thing about her husband, i have no idea what happened to him and am not going to come up with a theory based on a documentary. but not only was he a pedophile who met carole when she was a teenager roaming the streets at night, he was apparently going to costa rica every month to visit prostitutes and do who knows what other shady shit. they also don’t fully explain what his “businesses” were. it seems like there were a few things that could have happened to him.

Does anybody else remember how Tiger King made it out like Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin were doing the same thing?

That both of them were abusing animals?

That they were both abusing their employees, Joe Exotic by paying them a pittance and feeding them rotten meat, Carole Baskin by working her "employees" for more than forty hours a week for no pay?

How the show never clarified that Carole Baskin's Big Cat Rescue is an accredited sanctuary that legitimately helps big cats?

How the show never mentioned that Big Cat Rescue is a registered nonprofit, and that Joe Exotic's accusations that she was lying and manipulating her employees to get them to work for free is at best misleading, because they were legitimate volunteers who were knowingly donating their time to help big cats?

Does anybody else think it's weird that the one woman in the cast was the only one intentionally misrepresented to make her seem like a much worse person than she was?

That there was a stronger backlash against the one woman in the show than there was against Joe Exotic, even though she was the only person in the cast *not* abusing animals OR other people?

I just think that's weird.
