DAGGERS & TREASON - MCR 2025 theory

Ok people I don't usually make posts but this is too juicy not to share and I haven't seen anyone else talking about it.

If you've been watching the recent Black Parade tour shows you will have heard the new version of Mama with the dagger part, introduced as a 'secret' by Gerard.

Sound familiar? And not just because it fits so nicely into the rhythm of the song- but because it's actually the tune to The Fifth of November. Non-British fans would easily miss this, since Guy Fawkes Night is pretty much only celebrated here in the UK, but I thought I had heard this before, and my partner was quick to point out the similarity to the folk verse associated with the 1605 Gunpowder Plot.

It goes like this:

The song celebrates Guy Fawkes' failed attempt to overthrow King James I of England by blowing up Parliament with barrels of gunpowder- on November 5th it's traditional to have fireworks and a big bonfire burning an effigy of Fawkes.

Now, our beloved dagger verse and this old poem are sung to the same tune, even going to far as to line up precisely on 'treason' and 'treasonous'!

The dagger link is even more fun- we know that Gerard is a huge comic book nerd, even having written his own comics (The Umbrella Academy) and including friend and fellow comic writer Grant Morrison in the Danger Days music videos as Korse.

Moore and Lloyd's V For Vendetta is one of the most influential comics of all time. Much like Danger Days, it depicts a post-apocalyptic and dystopian near future following nuclear war, in this case taking place in the contemporary United Kingdom. Fascist dictatorship rules it as a police state where all opposing political candidates are eliminated (hello, Democracy!), and amidst the nightmare is the protagonist, V, dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask and carrying daggers at his waist.

V functions as an antifascist, anarchist revolutionary who dispatches despots with daggers and gunpowder, aiming to bring forth a revolution.

The use of the Fifth of November poem in V for Vendetta popularised the words as an anarchist chant, repurposing it from a pro-government message to quite the opposite. In modern days, the original meaning of Bonfire Night is diminished and it's common to see people burning effigies of politicians and other unpopular figures in place of a Guy Fawkes.

You might also recognise V's Guy Fawkes mask as the mask used by the international hacker collective Anonymous, who popularised the image somewhat, leading it to be known by many as the Anonymous mask. I doubt that Gerard is alluding to Anonymous in the recent tour, however.

So where does this all take us?

Though much of the dagger verse is still obscure there's definitely a message in there which implies a plot to overthrow/assassinate His Grand Immortal Dictator. Gee framing it as a 'secret' for us makes it feel like a call to arms which he can't directly make under threat, due to the Black Parade being puppeted by Draag. Perhaps what we need is a vigilante of our own (not quite what I meant, exploding clown, but you're doing great!).

I'm super curious to hear what people think and see where this goes, since there's for sure a lot more to be uncovered from these lyrics, so please add anything you've noticed in the reblogs!
