More Reasons Why I’m Loving Rise of TMNT

So back when Rise of TMNT started I made a list of why I was loving it and why others should give it a chance now that some time has passed I’m back at it again with some great stuff Rise is doing that i just gotta gush about!

1) The Mystical Yokai

When the idea of a mystical aspect was introduced in the first ep it kinda threw me, while TMNT has always had a mystical element no series has ever really leaned into it like Rise does all preferring to stick with Sci-Fi. Now this choice helps Rise in a few different ways. First off it helps to give Rise more of its own distinct feel with magic and yokai adding to the fights that can take place.

 Second it allows the turtles to go out and interact more with both the world and other characters freely. Third this gives those mutated a chance for a life. Now you might think this a step back narratively but like while other series address it nothing but the comics really go into it its just this elephant in the room that no one really talks about how these people are going to live their lives now. Soooo giving them a place where they CAN have normal lives still makes things easier and more focused. 

2) The female characters

TMNT has always had this weird issue of like wanting to avoid adding female characters like even one off ones. While it made sense for the original 90s show later series never really had an excuse. Like lets look at the 2k12 series I swear in its total run it only had like 10 female characters and only like 2 ish new ones. It just always struck me as odd and here’s rise giving us a cool mutated rockers, tough minator cook, instense wrestling announcer, and a cute slime girl in the first season and lets not forget…

3) FEMALE VILLAINS!!!

I AM FUCKING LOVING THESE ADDITIONS!!!! TMNT has really only ever had Krang prime as a female villain, sometimes Karai depending on the series though she’s typically more of a sympathetic villian/anti hero. But anyway so far Rise has given us two fun ones that I NEED to see more of. Big Mama is everything I never knew I needed in a TMNT villian and I cant wait to see more of her. Kendra and her purple dragons are a great foil for Donnie and a fun new take on the street gang (that again usually gets pushed aside in adapations). Hell even the side mafia group Makers of Brutality would be welcomed to me. And foot recruit is so intense I adore her, speaking of

4) The Foot

I ADORE THIS FOOT CLAN. So Rise did something really smart here by giving us The Foot Clan before Shredder. The Foot always just kinda fades into the background of Shredder and the other mutants becoming little more than faceless soldiers for the turtles to smash through to get to the actual threat. I mean hell they were just robots in 2k12 series. But by removing the Shredder from the equation this allows us to really see the foot clan as this large organization with rules and a history and not only as actual threats but as a means to jab for the Shredder. If the Foot Clan is this strong how strong will shredder be?

5) Shredder

HOLY FUCK I AM SO PUMPED This new take on Shredder is a breath of fresh air for the character and I fucking love it. A cursed armor that possesses it’s wearer sign me the fuck up! I mean when you get down to it TMNT adaptations often dont do much by way of personality or motivations when it comes to their greatest enemy just kinda giving him the most basic of lip service for his wants and goals. This time? Shredder is an entity of evil and its so perfect I’m kinda shocked that this is the first time the idea was explored. We don’t know who Shredder will be Draxum? lieutenant? Recruit? Warren Stone? TODD?! We don’t know and this serves to lead up to the anticipation to his inevitable return even more.

Anyway  I started this season loving this gorgeously animated, high energy, take on the TMNT story, now I’m loving it for its unique take on the characters, setting, and lake of fear for adding new and interesting characters and plots and I for one can’t wait to see where it goes. So people can complain about it if they want but I have throughly enjoyed every episode so far and once more I recommend you give it a shot you might like the new taste.
