Sometimes Tumblr is a lot like trying to explain a toddler that you can't eat bugs and spiders because that's bad for you, and then someone shows up to lecture you about how spiders are a completely different class from insects, also you got "centipede" and "millipede" mixed up, so obviously you don't know anything about what you're talking about.

I understand why a lot of fantasy settings with Ambiguously Catholic organised religions go the old "the Church officially forbids magic while practising it in secret in order to monopolise its power" route, but it's almost a shame because the reality of the situation was much funnier.

Like, yes, a lot of Catholic clergy during the Middle Ages did practice magic in secret, but they weren't keeping it secret as some sort of sinister top-down conspiracy to deny magic to the Common People: they were mostly keeping it secret from their own superiors. It wasn't one of those "well, it's okay when we do it" deals: the Church very much did not want its local priests doing wizard shit. We have official records of local priests being disciplined for getting caught doing wizard shit. And the preponderance of evidence is that most of them would take their lumps, promise to stop doing wizard shit, then go right back to doing wizard shit.

It turns out that if you give a bunch of dudes education, literacy, and a lot of time on their hands, some non-zero percentage of them are going to decide to be wizards, no matter how hard you try to stop them from being wizards.

While I’ve seen a lot of chatter that Acacia Forgot was robbed in the Rusical this season because she wasn’t given specific choreography for her number, I strongly disagree

No, she wasn’t given specific choreo. But you don’t choreograph the 11 o’clock ballad, the big emotional high point of the show before it plays out the ending

And she also had to learn multiple sets of choreo, as did everyone it seems, while playing supporting chorus for other queens during their features as well as the group numbers

Acacia fought for that spot, and I’m sure she was coached by Jamal on how to deliver an impactful performance with minimal movement so as not to detract from the vocal performance and emotion of the scene. It was likely edited out for a combination of saving time for better clips and that it’s fuck-all boring to watch her shuffle around looking wistful while Jamal yells things like “give me more arms!” Or “you need to sell it in the face, alright? You’re feeling things, and you need to make us feel them with you.”

Even if you intercut it with b-roll of the other queens critiquing her rehearsal, it would be very much a “I’m gonna go to the bathroom, no don’t pause it,” moment in the show

And it’s not that she wasn’t selling it, it was a decent park-and-bark ballad with appropriately demure downward glances and staring off into the middle distance as you basically explain the moral lesson of the show before the big finale number and bows

It was fine

And in a season with heavy hitters on the state like Onya and Suzie, “just fine” isn’t going to keep you safe for very long. And she’s faded into the background pretty much ever since she walked into the Werk Room. Track record aside, she’s just kind of…there? She’s not creating drama or capitalizing on drama between other queens, nor is she really reacting to attempts to create drama with her

Which is a perfectly valid way to stay sane during an intense filming schedule on top of it being a competition reality show. But it doesn’t make good TV. And mediocre TV doesn’t generate buzz online, which in turn does not generate profit. So now we’re at the point where if you can’t stand on talent alone, you have to be good TV as well to have a snowball’s chance in hell at making it to the top 4

And she just isn’t good TV

And that’s ok! I think a lot of queens that have competed on a lot of seasons, US and internationally, are phenomenal at what they do AND are just bad at being on TV and/or a reality show contestant

It’s a very specific media and interpersonal skill that takes time to develop, and not everyone wants that or is suited to it. Doesn’t make them terrible drag queens or terrible people. They just suck at being on TV and in a high-stress, highly manufactured and strictly quarantined environment with a dozen people you just met 12 hours before cameras went up

I often joke about auditioning (applying?) for the meme of it all, but I simply would not be caught dead in that studio

You want to talk about the horrifying ordeal of being known? I do not want a bunch of irony-poisoned Reddit gays examining every minute detail of my life. I’ve been on the internet longer than some of these queens have been alive, I fucking know better

And to that point, yes Acacia, you were the only queen who had the spine to do a fully live vocal and musical performance. No one is denying that, and I’ll stand on that it was a bold choice and credit where credit is due

But you were pitchy as fuck and your sense of lyrical flow is dogshit. I give every queen grace because it’s hard enough doing a live performance without Ru et. al. looming and half a dozen cameras are rolling

But it was still pitchy and unintelligible

Anyways this is a very long winded way of saying: Acacia, honey, if you ever read this and want a lyricist, my rates are negotiable
