Hi my name is Aijah Raye Refuerzo and I am an 18 year old Director of Photography and photographer from Los Angeles, California. I started to shoot film photography in 8th grade and quickly discovered that I had a special talent for photography. Photography helps me liberate and manifest my feelings, expressing the visuals I see in my head and stories I feel in my heart. I am at a turning point in my artistic exploration and I am just beginning to understand how to harness this energy and passion and transform it into art. I also make short films. When making short films, I love having the role of director of photography because of how the camera's movement can add to the storytelling. This summer at NYU Tisch studying photography has evolved my artist journey more than I could have asked for.

17 Years
Heart beat blinding as sight fades
Relieving poisonings dwelling within my body
Welled up agony for seventeen years
Gust of wind, tasting the sweetness
Voices fill my eardrums like a sweet melody
Beepings of machines fill the environment
Two faces shed fear
Death grabbing harder and harder
Eyelids flickering rapidly
Surge of electricity through my heart
Frozen like a photograph
Fluttering limply like a fish without water
Doors creak open
Awoken to bleach
Ten stories high
Lights distinct against the sky
Sun leaping, warming people all around
Camera untouched calling covered in discoloration
Loneliness cradles my memories
Eyes leaving nothing but a bitter salty trail

Hi, my name is Alice Ramos! I’m a rising Senior from Maryland with parents from Brazil and Guatemala. This program has been a fun and amazing experience so far. I am really happy that I’ve been able to learn so much and experiment with so many techniques in the darkroom and even photoshop. I also love being in New York because the city gives me inspiration. The first photo was made for the self portrait project we did here in New York. I did a series where I adapted to my backgrounds because I can blend in and be flexible with any culture or place. The last two are some of my previous works. Hope you enjoy! :)

Hello! I’m Maddie! I am from Michigan and I am a rising senior. I mainly like to shoot digital, but I am learning how to shoot film. This week our class has been working on our digital portraits of self and today we had our critique. It was amazing to see how everyone improved from last week assignment. For my self portrait assignment I decided to photograph pictures that represented how anxiety and depression makes me feel.

Hi my name is Emma Gellman,
My time at NYC has been amazing. I used to travel to new York when I was younger, it would be a sort of mother daughter trip. We would embark to the theater to see a broadway play, go to the statue of liberty, and lazily gorge ourselves at the m&m's factory, but I never truly appreciated New York for its uniqueness. The diversity of people and the excitement of places was opaque to the naive eyes of you. Being at NYU has not only helped me become a better photographer, but also gave me a completely new perspective of New York. Our first project was based on “Your View of New York”. They had my classmates and I use and develop film. Film was new to me, so my first day using it consisted of me on my hands and knees in the dark, spilling chemicals all over my clothes, and not to mention opening up fresh new RC paper in a fully lit room, but I soon got into the rhythm of it thanks to my teachers and my friends (Classmates). I went around New York and talked to complete strangers I would have never dared to encounter otherwise. It was truly enlightening and it opened my eyes to my surroundings. All the things I was blind to as a child began to gain clarity. My classmates are so welcoming and sweet. I have been having a really great time here so far, and look forward to what is to come.
Happy Birthday Maddie Holloman!!!

Hey Everyone!
My name is Mayumi and I’m a rising senior from San Diego, California. I first got into photography in the summer going into my freshman year. Ever since I stepped into the dark room, I never looked back. I always carry my camera with film wherever I go. I love photography so much that I’ve agreed to be a teaching assistant for my photography teacher for this next school year. I take most of my inspiration from Edward Steichen and Bill Cunningham. Though both have very different styles of photography, they both were passionate about their art. I’ve been coming to New York City ever since I was little and I’m excited to be spending these four weeks in the city! Below, you can see a wide range of my work. Though I mainly work in the darkroom, I still occasionally shoot in color.

Hey everyone! My name is Ida-Rose Chabon, I am a rising junior from Berkeley California. I have loved photography since I asked for a camera for my fifth birthday. Obviously, My parents didn't get me a huge fancy SLR or anything, it was just a little 4 gigabyte toy basically, but I loved it all the same. Since freshman year of high school, I have taken photography very seriously and spend much of my time with my camera on my hip, photographing nearly everything. I am particularly inspired by photographers like Jamel Shabazz and Slim Aarons because they primarily photograph people which is my favorite thing to photograph. Above you can see a photo I took of the wall in Bethlehem, Palestine, a portrait of a man in a barber shop, a jewelry store window on Canal Street here in NYC and a self portrait I took (this photo actually convinced me to cut my hair). Thanks for reading!

Hi everyone! My name is Isabelle, and I’m going to be a senior from Illinois!
I’ve always been interested in photography, but I started really loving it when I got my first camera my freshman year of high school. After that, as some people say, the rest is history!
Today is crunch time. We have open lab for our Establishing our View of NYC projects, and everyone is working hard on processing and making prints. Myles taught us how to print on Fiber paper today, which is more complicated but produces the results are so worth it. Everyone’s projects are so creative, and I can’t wait to see the finished results! We’ve already learned so much in the first week, and I can’t wait to see what we learn next.
Here’s a couple of pictures of my NYC project (It’s a work in progress!)

Hi I'm katrina and I'm currently attending the 2017 summer high school program! I'm 17 years old from Greensboro, North Carolina, which means I'll be a senior after summer ends. So far we have all been very busy and doing a bunch of stuff in and out of class. We finished one project and now we are all working on our Establishing a view of NYC project. There were many museums we went to the past two days, but most of them happened today. All of us went to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, and El museo del Barrio. I loved going to The Met and seeing the Irving Penn exhibition. There were so many different varieties of photographs, like cigarettes, tribe members, celebrities, still life, and even a couple of ink pen drawings! Also, The Jewish Museum had a great exhibition on paintings with poetry which was really cool to read then look at a set of paintings to go along with the poem. Here are some pictures I took to show a better look at what we all saw today! -katrina
