Amateur vs Professional
H/T to Bryan Suits of KFI AM 640 Military Mondays where I heard the emboldened quote below. I dug in to look for its history and found the following:
In 1944 a full version of the adage appeared in the volume “Psychology for Musicians” by Percy C. Buck who was an organist and a prominent Professor of Music at the University of London. This popular book was reprinted several times in the succeeding decades. Buck did not take credit for the saying which was presented as an anonymous definition:
What is the real difference between a professional and an amateur? Does not your mind immediately turn to the shallow explanation of money-payments? Two definitions have been made which may help you to think deeper than that:
“An amateur can be satisfied with knowing a fact; a professional must know the reason why.”
“An amateur practises until he can do a thing right, a professional until he can’t do it wrong.”

Hi Phil - I saw your tips for getting rid of cable. Thanks for going into so much detail about your setup, especially the schematics document. I'm actually working on a solution for à la carte television. Would you be interested in participating in the beta?

How to cut the cord and stop paying for TV you don't watch
Cox Cable TV and DirecTV are both expensive ($75 to $100 monthly for what we’d like to watch)
So for about $700, I added the following to my existing home network:
Roku 3,
New Core i3 computer (built from scratch),
Software: PlayOn + PlayLater HD,
Software: HDHR Fling,
WiFi Ethernet bridge,
SiliconDust HDHomeRun Plus, and
Mohu Sky TV antenna
We now no longer have to pay for a TV bill anymore — just our existing Internet connection through Cox Cable.
Here’s the whole design:

If that shortened URL fails, here’s the full Google Drive URL: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_asNurtfyADMktWelIxeVY3VDQ/edit?usp=sharing
FYI we already pay for Amazon Prime, so we do get some content from there.

Backup your iPhone before upgrading iOS versions
A warning to all of my friends with iPhones: whenever you install an iOS update, make sure to have iTunes do a full backup of your phone before running the update. iTunes will not do the update for you automatically; you need to request it by clicking the button to backup the phone. And no, backing up to iCloud is not a full backup; you need to click the backup button in iTunes.
Luckily, I did the backup just before upgrading from iOS 6.1.1 to 6.1.2. I am so glad took the time to do the backup; 6.1.2 somehow borked my phone completely.

Email blasts may seem like the out-of-touch old fogey of online marketing, but there's a reason they keep hanging around: They still work. But that doesn't mean most businesses understand how to get the most out of them. One of the biggest,…

Why The Internet Hates My Name (It’s The Accent Marks) Sara Inés Calderón, techcrunch.com
The Internet doesn’t like me — or, at least, it doesn’t care much for my name. My first name consists of two words and I have accent marks in both my first and last names, which seems to complicate my online life considerably. When trying …
