Backstory:

Thumbelina grew up on the country side of Andorra. Rolling hills, and small farms dotted the land. She was adopted when she was very young by an older woman who wanted desperately to have children, but was barren. The elder woman fell in love with Thumbelina the moment she laid eyes on her. The girl was so tiny, the smallest of all the other children. She had an innocent glow that radiated from her heart it seemed. The innocence stayed as she continued to age, but never really grow. She always seemed to be the smallest one in the class, growing only a few inches over the years. This concerned the elder woman at first, afraid that Thumbelina would feel like she wouldn’t belong. But that never affected the young girl. She still kept the same spirit, and always seemed to have her head buried deeply in fairy tales. From a very young age she seemed to be in love, with the idea of love.

Growing up in such a small town, it didn’t take word to spread of Thumbelina’s amazing voice. She only sang to the barn animals on the farm, but one day that changed. A young man was passing by, and heard her. He stopped to listen for what seemed like ages, before he approached her. He expressed how beautiful her voice was, and wondered if she would come and perform for his parents. She objected at first, fearing she would be to nervous to ever perform in public. After an almost hour of him begging her, she finally agreed. What she didn’t know, at the time, was that his parents were the King and Queen of Andorra. Making the boy she encountered the prince. It was all so much for her to take in, she was sure that she wouldn’t be able to do it. The Prince came to her side moments before she was to perform, and gave her enough courage to go on stage.

She didn’t know at the time, that her singing in front of Royalty would completely change her life. They loved her, and wanted her to participate in more things across the estate. They fell in love with her voice, but above all, they fell in love with how tiny she was. She knew that the public would adore her, and they wanted to share her with the world. She took the opportunity instantly, and began to do small events whenever the Royals wanted. Over time, she began to fall in love with the Prince. He was everything she wanted, almost as if he was straight from a fairy tale. She wasn’t sure if he ever felt the same way, as her little fairy tale was slowly shattering around her.

One night while she was singing for a charity event, a Duke from another country approached the King and Quieen of Andorra. He offered a ridiculous amount of money to them, along with two trading routes. He fell in love with the tiny girl on stage, and wanted her as his own. The King and Queen decided that it was a fair bargain, and traded their contract with her off. Thumbelina never had the chance to say goodbye to her adoptive mother, or to the one she loved. She was furious that she had no say so in the matter, and felt completely trapped. Her life with the Duke was nothing compared to how it was in Andorra. She felt like a slave, being forced to sing for the Duke when he pleased, doing all of his bidding, and never being able to leave his estate.  This left her spirit feeling weak, like she was nothing but a tiny puppet.

But one day, her life would change again. The Duke decided to share his tiny beauty with the world. He set up an event, and had her sing in front of more people than she ever had before. She was nervous, and without the Prince’s words to encourage her she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to perform. It was fear that drove her on the stage, fear that the Duke would harm her if she didn’t please him. So that night she gave it everything she had, and it paid off. While the Duke was off talking to people about Thumbelina, she was standing alone off the stage. A young man approached her, and told her that he was astounded by her voice. He continued to explain that he had a way out, that he could sense how unhappy she was. Eager, Thumbelina listened. The man, whose name turned out to be Dimitri, told her about the carnival. Without hesitation, Thumbelina escaped from underneath the Duke’s nose, completely undetected.

Life Under The Big Top:

The moment Dimitri brought Thumbelina to the carnival, she fell in love with it. She had to audition in front of Scar, which was incredibly intimidating, but she still managed to go through with it. Scar found the perfect place for her, as an opener for their tumbling act in the big top. She has found the carnival life to come pretty easy, enjoying all of the freedom that she has. Though her heart still aches at the thought she will never see her only love again. She still loves all the attention she gets, and wonders if maybe she will find him again someday��� or someone to replace him.

Connections:

CLIO - Thumbelina loves Clio to death, and wishes more than anything she could help her and her sisters break free of what she likes to call “Powerline madness”. She thinks that they all have wonderful voices, and wishes nothing but the best for them.

DIMITRI - Thumbelina is very attached to him. In her eyes, she is his saving grace. She is very thankful for the fact that he found her, and tries to go out of her way to show how much she appreciates him.
