The fact that this is from 2018 and I straight up thought it was like last week, because things have only gotten worse since then (:

Finally, some good local politics.

Hungary also has "behind God's back", but there's also the much more descriptive "on death's dick" (halál faszán) (:
there's this word in Serbian 'vukojebina' which literally means 'the place where wolves go to fuck' but they use it to mean 'in the middle of nowhere'. it sure does the job well, but the visual stayed with me longer than I would have liked it to.

Sokol means falcon? That's so cool. I only knew that word as the quintessential soviet-era portable radio that every grandpa had when I was growing up, never knew it meant anything.

Thank you for that <3
People will just ask you about your favourite period of history and you have to say something like “haha… maybe the Ancient Egyptians” because your other option is to tell everyone about the two month period you had where you were obsessed with the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 which fundamentally changed you as a person

I miss the times when I could just not give a fuck about American eleections, no matter how much it was shoved in my face. But for the first time it really looks like it might have an actual effect on my own country's future, and that's a horrible thought.

This is a beautiful post, but it also makes me really sad because that "modern Hungarian Republic" the heroes of 56 fought for doesn't really exist anymore, it barely ever had a chance to exist before the country was swallowed up into corruption and authoritarianism yet again.
Yesterday the PM used his annual speech that was supposed to be paying tribute to these heroes as yet another opportunity to shit on the EU (literally equating it to the Soviet Union, and urging Hungarians to fight against it - even though we're still EU members, and voluntarily so), declare that his main political opponent is a plant by "Brussels" who plans to give over the country to foreign powers if he wins the next election, and he basically called the people in the country who will vote for him traitors.
He's preparing for potentially losing the election (if there is even going to be an election... there's still two years to go) after being in absolute power for 16 years by planting the idea in his followers' heads that if it happens, it was because of interference from the EU, and therefore cannot be accepted. This is coming only a few weeks after his main political advisor basically admitted that if Russia were to ever attack us, like they did with Ukraine, we would simply not resist. Put these things together and the future looks really fucking bleak from here.

Yeah I think this poll is skewed because of the usage of "English" as a subject. For some people that means literature and grammar in their own language, while for others it means learning a whole new language from scratch.
Mine was English as a foreign language as well. Unfortunately all of my history teachers in elementary/high school sucked ass, so I only started appreciating that subject in university.
What was your favourite subject at school?
English
Mathematics
Physics
Biology
Chemistry
Regional language
General Science
Music
Theatre
Art (pottery, painting, carpentry, cooking, etc.)

That thing about how cats think humans are big kittens is a myth, y’know.
It’s basically born of false assumptions; folks were trying to explain how a naturally solitary animal could form such complex social bonds with humans, and the explanation they settled on is “it’s a displaced parent/child bond”.
The trouble is, cats aren’t naturally solitary. We just assumed they were based on observations of European wildcats - but housecats aren’t descended from European wildcats. They’re descended from African wildcats, which are known to hunt in bonded pairs and family groupings, and that social tendency is even stronger in their domesticated relatives. The natural social unit of the housecat is a colony: a loose affiliation of cats centred around a shared territory held by alliance of dominant females, who raise all of the colony’s kittens communally.
It’s often remarked that dogs understand that humans are different, while cats just think humans are big, clumsy cats, and that’s totally true - but they regard us as adult colonymates, not as kittens, and all of their social behaviour toward us makes a lot more sense through that lens.
They like to cuddle because communal grooming is how cats bond with colonymates - it establishes a shared scent-identity for the colony and helps clean spots that they can’t easily reach on their own.
They bring us dead animals because cats transport surplus kills back to the colony’s shared territory for consumption by pregnant, nursing, or sick colonymates who can’t easily hunt on their own. Indeed, that’s why they kill so much more than they individually need - it’s not for fun, but to generate enough surplus kills to sustain the colony’s non-hunting members.
They’re okay with us messing with their kittens because communal parenting is the norm in a colony setting, and us being colonymates in their minds automatically makes us co-parents.
It’s even why many cats are so much more tolerant toward very small children, as long as those children are related to one of their regular humans: they can tell the difference between human adults and human “kittens”, and your kittens are their kittens.
Basically, you’re going to have a much easier time getting a handle on why your cat does why your cat does if you remember that the natural mode of social organisation for cats is not as isolated solitary hunters, but as a big communal catpile - and for that purpose, you count as a cat.

For example, if you're speaking to a receptionist at a medical practice or calling idk your insurance company
I was going to specify "the first time" but then I realized I'm actually more likely to spell my name automatically if I know they're looking it up in a set of records
#my last name yes#plenty of people can't even get it right when they see it right in front of them#like I'd send a work e-mail asking someone to send me something#and the post-it on the thing has my name wrong#even though it was literally in the e-mail I sent#it's pretty frustrating#about me

You know what... I've been struggling with being mildly "addicted" to my phone lately (not in the sense that I literally cannot go without it but more like when I'm in bed by 9 pm and I would have plenty of time to read a book that I actually want to read, but instead I suddenly find myself three hours later still scrolling Facebook and reading political shit that just makes me frustrated), and I've been trying to force myself to do better, with varying results....
... but thinking about Tolkien telling me to stop that shit and not be Denethor might just be the thing to make me stop.
