The beauty of tumblr is that some people here think that cigarettes get you high and drinking once a week makes you an alcoholic, while others here started smoking at 13 and wouldn't even consider ketamine a drug because everyone does it. And both of them are on tumblr blogging about TV shows from 2005.

Heterosexual relationship culture is so alien to me and I don’t know if it’s the fact I’m not cishet or the fact I’m autistic but I hear so many things that make me go “Am I insane or are they?”
There’s a lot of hate on widowers and I saw a woman say “You cannot compete with a dead woman.” which is perhaps a reasonable statement to say if he’s constantly comparing you to his dead partner but that wasn’t what the post was about. And I realized “Oh my God, these people genuinely feel like they’re constantly in competition with their spouse’s exes and the ex being dead makes them feel insecure that they cannot best her.”
There’s also been an uptick in the ‘men and women cannot be ‘just’ friends’ rhetoric which I feel like is extremely dangerous and reflects the rise of fascism and sexism. Some of these stories of women feeling threatened by their husband’s female best friend have some merit and others are like “I feel angry that my husband still talks to the girl he grew up next door to and she and her wife are invited to family gatherings and included in family photos sometimes. Am I right to be suspicious?” No. No you’re not. I cannot imagine being you and living with that high level of stress and paranoia and constant torment and jealousy about your husband having a positive relationship with anyone who isn’t you.

Helloo, I just found your blog and it brings me great joy. Have you done a post on epaulette shark facts yet? They are my favourite 🥺
Tumblr media
Hemiscyllium ocellatum // Epaulette Shark
Thank you so much! Epaulette sharks are one of my favorite sharks too, it's been a while since I did a post on them, so here we go!
Probably the most interesting fact about Epaulette sharks is that they can walk on land.
That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but they can move and survive on land for up to an hour!
Tumblr media
These sharks have evolved the ability to undulate their pectoral and pelvic fins in a way that allows them to "walk" across surfaces. Their musculature and skeletal system is different from most other sharks, allowing them to lift and move their body even without the help of buoyancy underwater. They can regulate their breathing and heart rate to survive in these low oxygen conditions.
Tumblr media
You might be wondering why these sharks do this. When the tide lowers, there are small pockets of water that larger predators cannot access. During these periods, they have less competition when hunting and additionally don't have to worry about their own predators such as other sharks and groupers. Hunting prey also becomes easier when the prey has nowhere to go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are nine species of this "walking shark" and they can be found in Indonesia, Australia, and Papa New Guinea. These sharks can grow up to 107 cm (42.1 in) long and eat primarily small fish, crustaceans, and polychaete worms.

On the subject about parents needing to control their child's reading and invade their privacy in order to "protect" them from "inappropriate material:
Until I was in....college? At least? The vast, vast majority of the books I read were either a) assigned by my school or b) (the vast majority of my reading) provided to me by my mother.
My mom is a librarian. She filled our rooms with books, picked especially for us. She pointed out books on the shelves in our home library (separate from our bedroom shelves) that she thought we would like. She bought us books for birthdays, Christmas, and just stacks of recommendations. She once paid me $10 to read one of the Cirque Du Freak books because she said I needed "to be exposed to bad literature."
She respected my privacy in room, didn't go through my belongings. She explicitly pointed out to us that she wouldn't know if we took a particular book of the shelf, as long as we returned it, if we didn't want her to know we were reading it. She purposely brought us books that she didn't care for herself, because she thought we might find them valuable or enjoyable.
And if we wanted to read something she thought might upset or disturb us, she would explain why. She wouldn't stop us from reading it - just ask us to check in with her, to talk through it.
And so when I read something that upset or disturbed me, I would go to her. She would listen and talk through it with me.
If she said she didn't think I would like something, or that a book might disturb me, or that she thought I should wait until I was older, I listened to her.
She didn't need restrictions or control to protect me. Because she proved I could trust her.
Controlling kids is never about "protecting" them. It's just about control.
