“Ivy” is my favorite song on evermore because the melody and guitar riff are so catchy and fun, but I always kind of struggled with it because infidelity is a touchy subject with me. I literally cannot thank the OP enough for this analysis! It’s so good and makes so much sense! Bravo @garvita2002 !! 💕🌿

Ivy by Taylor Swift is a Jamie Claire song.And here's the why.

°How's one to know? I'd meet you where the spirit meets the bones. In a faith forgotten land... Well Claire never knew that a journey which separated her from her husband Frank and landed her in another time would lead her to meet Jamie - the BLOOD OF HER BLOOD AND BONE OF HER BONE.

°In from the snow. Your touch brought forth an incandescent glow. Tarnished but so grand. It's like the first time her new lover touches her (which brings forth that "incandescent glow") Something opens up inside her and she finally feels in sync with herself. The line " tarnished but so grand," suggests that although their physical connection was exquisite but it is forbidden since she's already promised and married to Frank.

°And the old widow goes to the stone every day. But I don't, I just sit here and wait, grieving for the living. In the future, when Claire visits Culloden Moor to say a final goodbye to Jamie, she thinks that the old widow she just met might be paying respect to her ancestors each and everyday. But Claire just couldn't say goodbye to Jamie and therefore just stayed at her home and grieved for her lost love. However when we find out that Jamie had survived the Battle of Culloden, it makes sense that for the past 20 years she was just "grieving for the living".

°Oh, goddamn! My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand. Taking mine, but it's been promised to another. This one's quite literal because after killing and almost being assaulted by the Red Coat deserters, Claire goes into a shock and only when Jamie consoles her, she's brought back to her normal self. However, it now dawns on Claire that she had been too caught up in her new marital bliss and had forgotten about her plan to escape this time and go back to Frank - the "other" whose her hand is "promised to"

°Oh, I can't, Stop you putting roots in my dreamland. My house of stone, your ivy grows. And now I'm covered in you. After Jamie learns that Claire's from the future and was trying to escape when she was caught by Black Jack, he takes her back to the stones and gives her the opportunity to go back to the life she once had. However, Claire finally chose to live with Jamie in this time. And as we all know that Claire didn't intend to fall in love with Jamie and tried hard to put her feelings at bay, she ended up loving him till eternity. Hence, she couldn't "stop" him from "putting roots in her dream land".

°I wish to know the fatal flaw that makes you long to be-magnificently cursed. He's in the room, your opal eyes are all I wish to see. He wants what's only yours. We definitely see Claire struggle in the future with Frank. She had loved him as her husband once, but what she felt with Jamie was such a strong emotion that she just couldn't bring herself to re-love Frank. Hence, she refers to all this as a "fatal flaw" because the pain caused by her desire to see Jamie and his eyes while she looked at Frank was heart wrenching and almost deadly. Also the way Frank wanted Claire and the child she was carrying to be his family quite resonates with the line "he wants what's only yours".

°How's one to know? I'd live and die for moments that we stole. On begged and borrowed time. The first line suggests that despite all the pain, heart break and death that occurred in the 18th century, Claire still would have made the same choice of travelling in time and meeting Jamie. Also the fact that Claire lived in the past with Jamie only for a span of 3 years and then returned back to the future , suggests that Jamie and Claire indeed did love and live on "borrowed time".

°So tell me to run. Or dare to sit and watch what we'll become and drink my husband's wine. When Claire went back to future, she spent days reading the Scottish history and nearly exhausted all the literature about the Battle of Culloden available in the reverend's house. Hence, she kind of looked for proofs that suggested that Jamie was alive so that she could "run" back to the standing stones of Craig Na Dun and be reunited with him. Having found nothing, she agreed to live with Frank on his terms. They never had a blissful married life and lived together only for the sake of Brianna. They "watched" each other become someone they didn't know anymore. Claire drowned all her pain of losing Jamie, of never having a chance to raise a child with him while drinking her "husband's wine"

Yes! And something else I just thought of:

Roger’s declaration to Bree in episode 5 that “once they know Jemmy can time travel, they’ll return to the future” was necessitated by Stephen Bonnet’s existence. The main reason he wanted them to return in that moment was because Bree was understandably paranoid about Bonnet and now HE’S DEAD! So even if she did make him a promise, does it really even matter anymore??

Don’t get me wrong, war, violence and antiquated medicine are dangerous, but is that REALLY a reason to leave behind everyone you love?

I completely agree with this.

So much has changed for the MacKenzies during this season and circumstances are much different now than they were when they initially talked about leaving in episode 2. So it doesn’t make sense that they would chomping at the bit to leave their family behind.

The whole reason Roger and Bree go back is so cloudy! It’s predicated on a conversation that the audience never saw and it makes Roger look controlling and uncompassionate (which he most certainly is NOT) and Bree look meek and spineless (which she definitely is NOT). Bree is OBVIOUSLY not happy about it and the fact that we never see her make any effort to convince Roger to stay is so out of character. I mean everyone was so nonchalant about it and the complete lack of conversation or discussion about it was staggering. I guess I could play devil’s advocate here and say that maybe Bree wasn’t fighting Roger on this because she know’s it’s best for her family to return to the future, but still—there was absolutely no bargaining from anyone once the possibility became real.

And I’m beyond pissed that we didn’t get a goodbye scene between Roger and Jamie. I’m not normally one to complain about not getting a scene between two characters, but that one needed to happen. I mean was episode 9 just a complete waste of time?? The whole thing just seemed super unceremonious to me.

I really hope the writers surprise me next week and that we find out where Roger, Bree, and Jemmy landed. Or maybe we’ve been punk’d and Ashton Kutcher is going to jump out from behind my couch. Guess we’ll find out.
