When people say they're troubled by homophobic, mysogynist, or violent rap lyrics, you often suggest that they engage art on it's own terms. Can you expand on this? It sucks that white people expect to find their privileged cultural values reflected in art made by oppressed minorities. It sucks that rap is trivialized, and that the genre's moral complexity is seen as glorifying negativity. But, I feel like I'm missing something. How do you appreciate art even when it's hard to identify with it?
I think you just explained it, no? You absolutely do not need to directly identify or even agree with art in order to appreciate it. In fact the cool thing about art is that it gives you an access point to the hearts and minds of people who you might’ve never even encountered in an artless world. But in order to fully appreciate this - and to develop anything resembling an informed opinion on the art or artist - you need to first accept that their values, language or traditions might differ from your own. It’s roughly the same process you have to go through when you meet new humans irl.I wouldnt fault someone who is troubled by homophobic, misogynistic or violent rap lyrics - I myself am sometimes troubled by homophobic, misogynistic or violent rap lyrics - and I certainly wouldn’t deny them their right to choose not listen to something that makes them uncomfortable. But I would totally suggest that it’s worth pushing through that discomfort if only because everyone breathing should be able to find some sort of joy in The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.

The man pictured above has cancer. This was Grip Plyaz planking at ATL Indie Fest 2011. Go help this man through this gofundme account.
“ Quentin "GripPlyaz" Hood is one of the pioneers of the Atlanta Indie music community, which is responsible for a number today's pop artist. If you've ever been to an indie hip hop show in or around Atlanta in the last 10 years, you have probably had the pleasure of seeing Grip bless the stage and control crowd as the proclaimed "King of Rachet." Recently, Grip was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. He has to go through several weeks of radiation treatment, five days a week. Grip is in need of transportation and treatment cost. He hasn't been able to work or perform lately due to fatigue and treatment. He is a proud father, performer, and man who is very giving and honorable. Grip isn't asking for help, his friends are. If you've ever had a beer, a conversation, or are just a fan of his music here's your chance to help a good dude. “

Noz I think it’s weird that add much as you slander Hov from time to time to put all of his albums as the best albums of the 2000s. You stand by Supa Ugly and Takeover add being superior to Ether, pay live jay z videos and you said Dear Summer is your favorite Memphis Bleek. Bruh...

On the record….
What do you recommend to friends rapwise who are J. Cole obsessed?
None of my friends are J. Cole obsessed because I am an adult who has mostly adult friends. If I did have friends who were J. Cole obsessed I would tell them that celebrity obsessions are not healthy and that Common Sense’s second album Resurrection is great.

Actually tumblinerb is the only one who did acknowledge its existence. Some good tracks on there.

I wrote a memoir (#BlackSheepDontGrin) & poured some pieces of my soul in to it. Meanwhile, every blog site would rather cover my FREE mixtape smh. More than likely, b/c Tupac Shakur was photoshopped with braids..either that, or b/c they can generate more “traffic” (ad- revenue) by allowing you to click-thru to a download link….anywho, the mixtape was a gift to my true fanatics & supporters (& admittedly light)…MY ALBUM IS/WAS MY EVERYTHING & It would mean the world to me, if WE could get it on the charts without any respectable hip-hop journalist/website even acknowledging it’s existence.. We’ve been knowing how irresponsible record companies are, now that has trickled down to the mediums that “inform” you about the music, let us not continue the trend on the consumer level (audience)…As responsible fans, let’s BUY the music we enjoy.. #StrikeTheShepherd
