Does Tokoyami’s quirk, Dark Shadow, have a physical form?

During the final exams, Tokoyami and Tsu are facing Ectoplasm and after being immobilized by their teacher’s quirk, Tokoyami sends Dark Shadow after Ectoplasm and the two of them start fighting, and it’s obvious that Ectoplasm is hitting a physical form with the way Dark Shadow reacts to the pain, but he’s a shadow?

Is his quirk truly Dark Shadow, or is it more like a Dark Entity? If he was actually a shadow, then you shouldn’t be able to hit him, but he’s also seen taking damage from Bakugo during the Sports Festival, so which is it?

I’m truly confused and have watched My Hero Academia a million times and I’ve never noticed them try to explain it.

my bf brought up a very interesting point to me earlier … the straw hats already have all of luffy’s original 10 men crew. not counting luffy there’s zoro, usopp, sanji, nami, chopper, robin, franky, brook, jinbei, and … laboon. laboon is an official member of the strawhats, with the jolly roger painted proudly on his forehead to show his loyalty. and knowing luffy, he’d 100% have a whale on his crew, much like the rumbar pirates had welcomed him with open arms. laboon is officially the 10th (or, as technically the 5th, before chopper) member of the straw hat pirates.
