“It’s a nod to Trayvon, no question. Trayvon Martin and people like him. People like Jordan Davis, a kid who was shot because of the perception that he was a danger. When you’re a black man in a hoodie all of a sudden you’re a criminal. That’s something we shouldn’t have to deal with, but we do. It’s a double standard. We can’t cover our head when it’s cold and raining because God forbid someone sees us and puts our life in danger. We wanted to pay homage to that — it’s not something we were shying away from.” [Mike Colter; Luke Cage]

Tryna write an artists statement for our group show and its so emo??   “I am interested in the idea of a portrait as a map of distance.  A portrait is never the person it depicts and can never hope to be. It is the person being looked at. By a certain person, at a certain time, in a certain place. None of which can ever realign. This can either be read as either a great loss, or as a celebration, a defiant I was here.”

If you’re healthy you probably don’t realize how demoralizing it is to spend all day in a hospital gown
But now a new collaboration is designing fashionable hospital gowns to encourage sick teens that they’re not just a hospital patient.” See how they react when they try their new robes on.

This judge had exactly the right reaction to the shameful way nonviolent prisoners are treated in US jails
A woman was denied pants or tampons after being arrested for not completing a diversion course that was part of her sentencing from a shoplifting charge. But see how the judge reacts when she finds out that the prisoner’s humiliating treatment is apparently routine.

quick question. no rush. but when will hollywood stop making mental illness a circus act where we are depicted as “freaks” or as an american horror story or as the type of people to kidnap young girls. we are so much more likely to be the victim of violent crime than to commit it, but you’d never know that from media. i mean the fact that the way that people distance themselves from violent crime is by saying “he wasn’t normal,” “he wasn’t really human, he had a mental illness” and. i get it, you’re scared of us; i’ve seen the mental hospitals that were open only a generation ago, i’ve seen what you do to us, i’ve seen how anything a person does which is “unusual” has been declared a mental illness - gay people, trans people, hell even just women who didn’t want to get married but were born in the wrong era - i’ve seen how you torture it out of us, how you punish us even now by striking down public health bills, by making little to no room for psychiatric patients in ERs, by having many of our doctors know nothing about what it is like to live like this… you think we don’t know you don’t see us as one of you? you think we are unfamiliar with how you shun us, how you talk down to us, how you write off our illness or you call it a burden or you shape it into a sick version of what it’s like? we get it. we get it. to you, the real nightmare would be to be one of us. us sad little sacks; trapped in our minds or whatever else you want to poetically envision.
but please do it somewhere that others aren’t going to see. please do it where adults won’t see some figment of what it means to be ill and use it to condemn our behavior later - i once told my teacher i had missed school because i have crippling depression and she said “you should be happy, it makes you creative”. please do it where teenagers don’t have to watch a cast of “real teens” playact disorders for the sake of drama; where they learn to roleplay and idolize their sadness because their heroes never get better or try to, so why should they? please do it somewhere that little girls and little boys who are victims of horrific abuse and have developed dissociative identities as a result don’t have to accidentally see a trailer for “Split” and think that they are monsters.

Things I’ll never tire of: • pads being called “feminine napkins”
• shaving commercials for women where their legs are completely hairless before the razor even touches them
• paper towel commercials where the father bursts through the door with his son, tracking mud everywhere and breaking something, and the mother smiles fondly and cleans by herself
• kids’ protein shake commercials where the six year old refuses to eat his dinner and the mother smiles fondly and?? replaces his dinner?? with a drink??
• shoe commercials where a bunch of women are screaming hysterically and thus making me associate that company with agonizing shrieks
• cake toppers where the bride is dragging the groom because nothing says love and devotion like hatred and regret. these people are going into marriage expecting and even enjoying the idea that they’re not happy.
• bumper stickers that insult the person behind you because for some reason you really want to file all that paperwork when some inevitable idiot rear ends you out of spite
• when teachers divide girls and boys during class discussion, generalizing their opinions by gender, so that they basically discourage anyone from entering the conversation with the goal of understanding each other. now you have spoken for people you never asked the opinion of, as well as made sure that guys feel it’s okay to dismiss the perspective of women and vice versa. education = ignorance after all
• diet Dr. Pepper for men

We need a signal. Something you would never say, like sardines or pickle juice. You say it, you’re still you. Something I never say. Like, “I love you”.
