Verbiage for the sake of verbiage #3
The economics of “Take Off” (or how residual categories dominate the Western semantic field) Yes, I’m talking about you W.W. Rostow...
Last month in history lecture, our Professor brought up the origin and issue with the term “Third World” as an antiquated noun used to describe the non-aligned states of the Cold War (1945-1991, though you may be pressed to disagree with these year-bookends, this happens to be my historiography). A brief discussion on the Bandung Conference of 1955 followed suit (regarding which, I was excited to see had made its way into a class on American history).
For some reason, a tangential debate was sprung over the recent name change of the Third World Transition Center to the Students of Color Center, and whether or not that name was appropriate given the mission and impetus for the creation of the former.
Seeing that I am a) from Indonesia and b) can speak to the semantic importance of this name change, I decided to deposit my reasons, and perhaps impart some perspective.
I spoke, “Hi! to me, being from Indonesia, a supposed Third World nation during this period, the name change makes sense. We don’t even call our country a Third World State anymore seeing that its totally outdated. The term developing country gets tossed around but not even that comports snuggly with how our people classify the country. And also, why 'Students of Color’? Third World states also include Austria and Switzerland, yet I’m not sure these students would feel comfortable at the center.”
The Professor shot back a quizzical look. “Switzerland and Austria aren’t really Third World countries though
I mean given today’s definition of the term”.
Dear Professor: thank you for illustrating the very misnomer I thought you yourself set out to dispel. We don’t refer to ourselves as “Third World” because it isn’t the 1960s, it’s 2015. And again, you’ve committed the error of conflating a political/ideologically driven term with an economic one (third world is NOT synonymous with poor thank you). Also, when a student FROM the very country your lecture concerns itself with is trying to give his earnest and non-aggressive opinion, try and be a little more respectful. After all, you are so CONCERNED with the semantic field and how labeling disenfranchises unrepresented nations due to American-centrism, yet you listen with such disinterest.
Hypocritical, churlish, and disappointing.
Excuse the microaggression. Merely a symptom of attending one of the most PC colleges in America.

OkCupid combined their data with the college tuitions of U.S. News and World Report. Turns out, the more your parents pay for an education, the hornier you are.
Top private universities (denoted by the red) such as Columbia University, Tufts, and Brown were at the top of the list, averaging $40k+ per year in tuition and a 5.3+ on the amount of sex students, on average, have. The college with the highest score, and most expensive tuition? Sarah Lawrence.
Top public universities (in blue) such as University of Vermont, U.C. Berkeley, and U.C. Texas also scored pretty high. Guess it goes to show that you get what you pay for
or, at least what your parents pay for

Of course, there are some questions I have for OkCupid, one of the most obvious being their source of information. Second, wouldn’t it be obvious that colleges in rural or less-urban areas (ie. Sarah Lawrence) by nature have students participating in sex more frequently, simply because: a) there’s not much else to do and b) there’s no one else to do it with.
Regardless, maybe you should test your university here.
