it’s 11:59. At its core, the Death Note universe is a fucking tragedy.

I can't even begin to articulate how fucked up Light's life was. He was meant to be the picture-perfect son and student. He had all this pressure weighing on him. He wanted to be just like dad, wanted to do good in the world. But, y'know, being raised by a cop doesn't exactly leave you with the most nuanced view of good vs evil. And to top it all off, he was just a kid. Seventeen. Bro, I'm fucking seventeen. Seventeen is a very bitter age. You've become aware of the bad in the world, but don't yet have the ability to do anything about it. And this bitter, burnt out teenager was given the power to change the fucking world.

I'd like to remind you that Light didn't actually think the Death Note actually worked until he tried it. And only then did Ryuk show up and go "Oh, by the way, you can never go to Heaven or Hell now :)"

Like... what the FUCK, dude?! You couldn't have showed up a few minutes earlier to tell him "oh yeah if you use the notebook you get banned from the afterlife"? THIS ENTIRE CHILD JUST GOT BARRED FROM THE AFTERLIFE BECAUSE RYUK DECIDED NOT TO ACTUALLY TELL HIM ANYTHING!

And the notebook corrupts. I honestly think Yotsuba arc Light is probably the closest we get to seeing what Light is actually like without the Death Note's influence. He just wants to do some good in an awful world. And he can't even do that.

Reminder that when Light dies after the time skip, he's 24. TWENTY FOUR. HE IS BARELY AN ADULT. HE GOT HIT WITH GODLIKE POWERS AT SEVENTEEN AND EVER SINCE HAS BEEN ON A FUCKING EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER. THIS MAN IS NOT OKAY. HE NEEDS THERAPY.

But if you think Light's life sucks? Take a look at what Ryuzaki went through.

The timeline of his life is basically

-Be an orphan

-So smart he basically gets forced into being a detective at like age EIGHT

-Spends pretty much the entirety of his childhood solving cases that would make grown adults traumatized

-Oh, also, APPARENTLY HE STOPPED WORLD WAR THREE AS A KID?

-Basically isolated

-A bunch of orphans are hand-picked to replace him (Which just hurts all around. Not only do the kids have to live with the knowledge that their only purpose is to replace L, but L has to live with the knowledge that if he dies he will immediately be replaced. He is fully expendable. He means nothing.)

-OH AND LET'S NOT FORGET THAT THE FIRST KID MEANT TO SUCCEED HIM FUCKING KILLED THEMSELF (rip A you will be missed) AND NOW THAT'S GONNA BE ON HIS MIND FOREVER

-Beyond. Do I even need to say anything? Imagine knowing that someone became a serial killer because he couldn't live up to you.

Forget living up to standards, imagine BEING the standard. Knowing that trying to be what you are is so stressful that it has driven people mad. Imagine having to be an example for others from such a young age. How the fuck does he do it. How has he not crumbled under the pressure.

Maybe he has. Maybe that's why he lies to eveyone. Maybe if he faced the truth he'd lose what remnants of sanity he still clings to.

L LAWLIET AND LIGHT YAGAMI ARE TWO OF THE SADDEST FUCKING CHARACTERS IN ANIME. BOTH OF THEM DESERVED SO SO SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS. I FUCKING CAN'T.
