STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE // S4E6 Rejoined What do you want to do? Throw myself at her, profess my undying love and my complete disregard for Trill society. A joke Lenara made at the reception. Doesn't sound so funny anymore, does it?

When talking about goofy Star Trek episodes something like "Sub Rosa" is different from, like, comedy episodes or gimmick episodes. "Sub Rosa" is goofy, but it was intended as a perfectly sincere gothic romance homage. "Threshold" was meant to be received as a body horror episode. They're goofy because they play their weird premises way too straight. When you get down to it, besides the set up and ending, "Threshold" isn't that funny. It's just a guy-transforms-into-something episode. But the fact that the set up is "this is what happens if you don't obey the speed limit!" and the finale is salamander babies elevates it. We can't really get episodes like "Sub Rosa" again bc we no longer have writers so deep in the weeds of working on episode fourteen of twenty-six to notice they're writing a story about someone fucking an evil candle

Watched the new episode of Strange New Worlds and I realized my issue with the show so far.
In my opinion, there's too much focus on romantic relationships between characters, and not enough focus on developing the characters, introducing new concepts or phenomena, social commentary, world-building, or pushing the envelope. It's basically a romance show with a little bit of science fiction sprinkled in and that was never the point of Star Trek.
And I'm not saying Star Trek has never had any romance or that there shouldn't be any romantic relationships in Star Trek or that Strange New Worlds doesn't do any of the things I mentioned above. I'm just saying the amount of romance per season of SNW is higher than previous Treks because the seasons are so much shorter, and that as a result, they don't spend as much time on other things that Star Trek is known and loved for.
I've really been trying to give it the benefit of the doubt, and the first season was pretty solid and really gave me hope. But now that we're in the third season, it just kinda feels like every season is some variation of: Pike's Romance! Silly Hijinks episode! Spock's romance! x3 Let's give one of the characters some development! Interesting plot point that we'll never come back to! Special episode featuring Jim Kirk! THE GORN!!!
And it's not fun anymore :/ It's not inspiring, it doesn't give me hope, it doesn't make me feel things and that makes me sad, because I love Star Trek so much and I don't like to feel this way about it.
Edit: TLDR basically the issue is Strange New Worlds is trying to be Star Trek and a romance show and not really committing to either and it suffers for it. It's not that you can't do SciFi Romances, but SNW doesn't do either of them particularly well because the studio seems more focused on ratings, mainstream marketability, and how people will react than telling a good story so it never really leans in. That is something that negatively impacts a lot of the new Treks, which is unfortunate because a lot of the characters and plots have a lot of potential for making a good series but it gets squandered.
