Covid isn’t winter, moron. It’s a systematic failure. It’s not “going to be spring” anytime soon for those of us who lived in winter before covid. It’s just another day.
being a student right now is so fucking terrible is anyone coping

Every now and then I think about that post I made in high school, back when I was coping with a mom who was lowkey an alcoholic. It went something like “if you need alcohol to have fun you should see a therapist” and everyone and their mother were all “um sweaty actually i use alcohol to cope so shut the fuck up and die.” Like.
I was never wrong. Ya’ll shouldn’t need to get completely blasted to have a good time. Idc if it helps you “unwind” or whatever. It’s not a coping mechanism. Like yeah have a few beers with the boys or whatever, but if you’re getting drunk just so you can take it easy, you need a therapist.
Anyways alcohol culture is toxic. Go to therapy.

you do know that when jewish and romani people say “never forget” we mean “learn about the holocaust so you can recognize the warning signs of facism and genocide” not “repeatedly bring up the holocaust whenever anything bad happens and exploit our pain and trauma to make people care about your cause” and when we say “never again” we mean “take action to prevent any stage of genocide on any scale by any means, hold collaborators responsible and don’t be complicit” not “only care about genocide when it’s too late”, right? or did you think it was just a fun catchphrase?

How’s that a burn though?
shout out to the hot girl in my playwriting class who responds with “yeah, but that’s derivative of neon genesis evangelion” every time somebody brings up some artsy film i’ve never heard of and they immediately shut up and can’t argue without admitting they’ve seen nge. us regular-looking people could never get away with that. THAT’S what we mean when we say “use your privilege for good”

How come no one mad Rancid did it too?
even if billie joe was straight (he’s not) teenagers getting offended he used the word faggot in american idiot 16 years after the fact would still be some of the goofiest discourse i have yet to see on this website. if you were young and gay in 2004 that shit rocked your world bc we were living through one of the most powerful resurgences of blind american patriotism and anti-gay evangelical bullshit of the last three decades. i dont think most of yall understand how radical that song, that album, and green day’s overall anti-bush pro-gay stance was for the time. even though we were at the cusp of bush becoming unpopular by the time it was released, american idiot saw a fairly mainstream rock band condemning not just him, but the bigoted, ignorant american culture which created him. to remove all of this context from the song and act like green day was just throwing around homophobic slurs for the hell of it is exactly why people joke nobody has reading comprehension on this website lmao. he’s not weaponizing the term; he’s using it to identify with an alternative american society.

lol I like how it’s implied this is bad because it’s state run. Dude, that happens in the USA all the time too. Greed is greed. Like I’m literally not talking about Flint. When I was a kid in Los Angeles the water would randomly turn brown. Or turn off. lol who knows why.
About the level of service in Russia
Maybe you don’t know, but here in Russia there is no free market.  Services for providing hot and cold water, electricity, and so on are provided by the state. There can’t be any private company that can provide these services BY THE LAW. That’s monopoly. It was just an introduction. I want to share with you the situation that happened yesterday: A cold and hot water were turned off all over my residental area without any warnings for 10 hours. I don’t know what happened because there wasn’t any information published :) And we were forced to buy water just to wash hands. Attempts to sue them were made, but without success. That’s because there is no justice and rule of law in my country. I don’t even talk about the quality of, for example, water. Since it is obvious that it is really bad, very bad.

Dr. Wise on Influenza
The British Film Institute recently shared a public information film from 1919. The film was originally commissioned by the Local Government Board (later known as the Ministry of Health) the film showed how virulent ‘Spanish Flu’ spread and the precautions people should take.
youtube
The film includes some very early microscope footage of the virus, whether this is authentic I’m not sure. Fascinating nonetheless and must have had quite an impact on the audience to see the then invisible virus for the first time.
Tumblr media
The film follows Mr Brown, an office worker, as he spreads the flu through his office and his coworkers then inadvertently spread it even further.
Tumblr media
Mr Brown eventually becomes bedridden but it is several days before his coworkers also become ill. In that time they go about their business and spread the deadly influenza.
Tumblr media
One of Mr Brown’s coworkers takes ill while waiting in a busy queue - further spreading the virus when those nearby help him.
Tumblr media
A telegram from Mr Brown’s wife reaches his office, advising them that he has passed away from the flu and his funeral will be on monday.
Tumblr media
The film then shows a nurse prepare several simple masks including the rudimentary cloth veil mask seen below.
Tumblr media
She then demonstrates another mask before the film cuts to a hospital ward. This sequence is very similar to an American film which features Red Cross nurses in Boston preparing gauze masks.
Tumblr media
The film then shows the nurses, wearing the various types of mask, working on a hospital ward. Dr. Wise outlines some precautions people should take to avoid infection, this was a effort made around the world, in this article we look at an advice poster from the US Navy’s senior medical officer, Captain G.L. Angeny, at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in February 1920.
Tumblr media
Finally, Dr. Wise then shows his audience the latest death tolls from the virus from across major towns in Britain. With nearly 2,500 dying in London.

This is all true and good, but can we please stop bringing this up as a like to like? These things are all bad yes, but they are not the same. Hidden in this idealism is the ammunition for nationalists to point and say “ah ha! It was done to us so your claims are invalid!” Or worse, “since it was done to us any attempt by you to have us recognize what we are currently doing is also invalid.” These arguments pull from these kinds of assertions. Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, Irish, Scottish, ect were not all abused in the same ways. Does that negate that abuse? No. Does that allow for a metric to measure whose abuse was worse? No. Did that history of abuse create animosity between these groups making it easier to abuse them? Yes. Is this factionalism of playing “well my culture had it worse, or more recently or whatever” a continuous symptom ensuring disunity and distrust? Obviously. Are nationalists evil immature children who will use any intelligent discourse to their advantage if there is any space left for them to insert their message? Yes very much. So let’s stop playing the “well actually I’m the most woke because I can see the real racism.” We all know where modern racism comes from, capitalism controlled colonization that continues today. Of course we don’t conquer lands anymore, we conquer minds. And divided groups still fall more easily. Be subtle, recognize the limits of your arguments, stop trying to prove you are more right than everyone else around you. STOP GIVING NATIONALISTS AMMUNITION
