By far my favorite thing about this so far is the figuring out. That, and not having to include anyone else's opinions, or having to change something because of them. I had an idea for some ceiling details but, I just couldn't find anything that would work. Enter a handy metal jewelry shot plate and my first attempt at Sculpey. I'm at the "I want transoms over doors, 2 archways and a hole in the floor stage". Drawing at least the doorways today and, hopefully cutting them successfully. After trying to fit a spiral staircase into the library, I've realized it just isn't going to fit. But, I've found a way to get some of that spiral detail into the first floor portion. I'm still going to cut a hole in the second floor floor, however. Do I go for the important-to-my-design circular hole a la St. Paul's Whispering Gallery? Or do I chicken out and go rectangular to save myself the trouble of figuring out circular moldings? Sidenote: I was describing this project to a director friend. His response "Why don't you "just" design and build your own?" "Just" is one of my least favorite words in the english language. It's right up there with "no" and "wait". I hate hearing all the 3 things at work but, especially "just" because it tells me the person giving me the directive has no clue how to execute it or the level of difficulty it'll require. I am fully onboard requiring the building and modifying of a dollhouse for all film school curriculums. And the lighting of it (thinking of you, cinematography friends). The thing that I'm least nervous about tackling in this project is the interior design. I can draft and already have the tools. It's the tiny little pieces of food and "dressing" I have no idea how to make. I'm really looking forward to learning and figuring out how to make a perfect loaf of lemon bread. Thought I'd share some of the books in my library that I find very useful for set designers, both beginner and not that will come in handy for this project. The Elements of Style is an art department bible. Both it and The Style Sourceboth both take you through various eras and are really good for differentiating between decorative styles. Most shops here are still shut down (until at least May 20), so I've been unable to visit the dollhouse and woodworking shops in town. For now, I've contenting myself by planning out the rooms and making lists of "ser dressing" and have decided I'd like custom tiles in the kitchen. I'm finding pretty patterned sheets of tiles with no relief, and some individual tiles on etsy but, I think I'd like to at least paint, if not make, my own. (I say this now, before all the squinting and smearing of paint). Has anyone made their own tiles? Fimo? Sculpey? Balsa wood? Any help much appreciated 🙏🏻 (This is the first accessory I've purchased for the place. Here goes what's left of my sanity and fingertips... When I was a child, my sister and I were taken to visit a younger cousin one city over. I only remember seeing her parents on three occasions, one of them being at a funeral. That first meeting left an indelible mark. You see, Pupa (aka "Doll") had a very fancy bedroom featuring one big beautiful dollhouse. The obsession began. For years, I've driven by a dollhouse miniatures shop here in the city, swearing I'd go in soon. It's been far too long. I finally decided on a dollhouse kit, only to find it not available anywhere near me. I started scouring Craigslist in the US... and there it was. In Danvers, of course. (My friends would know how perfect this is and that Danvers once tried to keep me there... long story). A new friend picked it up and an old friend will be collecting it and shipping it to me. I pray all the original pieces are in the box. Research tells me the instructions will not be helpful. While I wait for "The One", I'm collecting tools and materials, as well as sorting through various books I use at work to help me decide what each room will become.
