If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:26
Most people assume that God is pro-family, and there is much in the Bible to support that idea. God created marriage (Genesis 2:21-22); he is against divorce (Matthew 19:8); he commands us to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12); and he provided a family for Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:18).
But if God is pro-family, he is pro-Jesus even more. We are commanded to follow Christ even at the cost of losing our family. Many Christian wives have been rejected by their unbelieving husbands, and many Christian husbands have been rejected by their unbelieving wives. Many Christian children have been rejected by their unbelieving parents, and many Christian parents have been rejected by their unbelieving children.
Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household (Matthew 10:34-36), said Jesus.
When Jesus said we are to hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, he did not mean that we are to wish them harm. He meant that our love for him should be so great, it makes all other loves seem like hatred by comparison.

Give a Tithe Unto the Lord

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse (of Israel), so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows."       Malachi 3:10

Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, Sir, open the door for us. But he will answer, I don’t know you or where you come from.
Luke 13:25
This applies to people who want to sin a little more before they come to Christ. They know there is much at stake but assume there will always be time to make their peace with God. But according to Jesus, this may not be true.
Years ago, I went to a store and pulled into the parking lot at 8:59 in the evening. I did not know what time they closed, so I parked the car and ran to the door. But the moment I got to the door a lady inside turned the key. I looked at her with pleading eyes, but she said, We’re closed. I threw up my hands and begged, but she shook her head and said, We’re closed. If I had arrived a few seconds earlier I could have been in, but now it was too late. That’s how it will be on the last day. And [what] he shuts no one can open (Revelation 3:7), wrote John.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
Luke 12:6
It is easy to believe God cares for us when things are going well; but here we are assured that God cares for us even when things go badly. If God watches over sparrows, how much more does he watch over us?
I was at a friend’s house when a bird flew into a large window and broke its neck. We went outside to investigate, and beneath the window were several other birds that died the same way. And how many birds have fallen prey to their natural enemies?
Jesus was not talking about sparrows chirping nicely in a tree, but about those that had been captured, and were being sold for lunch. They were so common that you could buy two for a penny (Matthew 10:29). And for two pennies you could get an extra one free. But even the free sparrow was not forgotten by God.
God does not promise that nothing bad will ever happen to us, but that nothing bad will happen to us that He will not turn into good (Romans 8:28). Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows (Luke 12:7), said Jesus.

The Race Is Not to the Swift
I returned and saw under the sun that—the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.
Ecclesiastes 9:11
The world tells you that those with the qualifications, talents, and experience get the jobs, promotions, and high salaries.
My friend, though you live in this world, as God’s beloved child, you need not be limited by it. You have God’s favor—His unmerited, unearned, undeserved grace!
Read Ecclesiastes 9:11—“The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.” So even if you are not the smartest, strongest, most knowledgeable, or best looking in the natural, God can still give you good success when you depend on His grace.
Instead of mulling over your “disqualifications,” be conscious of God’s favor on you. Smile and say, “God’s favor is all over me because of Jesus. I expect good things to happen to me today!”
Beloved, be conscious of His favor. Believe it. Confess it. And you will experience it!

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy.
Luke 10:19
As the disciples proclaimed the gospel, they would encounter demonic resistance, so they needed to understand their authority over Satan. Satan has more power than the strongest Christian, but less authority than the weakest Christian.
Imagine a traffic cop, in the middle of an intersection, with a garbage truck barreling toward him. The traffic cop holds up his hand, and the garbage truck comes to a stop. This does not happen because the traffic cop has more power than the garbage truck, but because he has more authority. I have given you authority . . . to overcome all the power of the enemy, said Jesus.

Jesus, Be the Center
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9
I love how in Luke 24, the Holy Spirit intricately records for us the meeting that Jesus had with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus on the very first day of His resurrection. With heavy hearts, grieved and shell-shocked, they talked about how Jesus, whom they greatly esteemed, had been taken by the religious leaders, condemned to death, and crucified.
Read the full story and notice how the two disciples were caught up with their own understanding of the events that had transpired and with their thoughts about the redemption of Israel. As a result, they were downcast, disappointed, and depressed. This is what happens when the truth about Jesus is absent from our minds.
The disciples had hoped that Jesus would be the one who would redeem Israel. To them, Jesus was simply a means to an end. They were more consumed with Israel’s redemption than with the Redeemer Himself. No wonder they were depressed!
Jesus can never simply be a means to an end, no matter how noble that end may be. We need to be occupied with Him and allow everything to revolve around Him as He takes center place in our lives.
The disciples were downcast because they didn’t believe in what God’s Word had prophesied about Jesus’ suffering and resurrection. If they had believed and understood that the events in the last three days were all orchestrated by God and that the cross was His grand redemption plan to save all men, they would have been rejoicing with faith, love, and hope. They would have been greatly anticipating their reunion with the resurrected Christ instead of being so inward-looking and discouraged. But because of their wrong beliefs, they had become disillusioned and were mentally defeated.
If you are feeling fearful, anxious, or depressed today, do a quick check. What’s on your mind? What’s your heart occupied with? Are your thoughts filled with faith in Jesus, the Shepherd of your life, or are they filled with apprehensions about the future, fears about your current situation, and excessive self-introspection?
Give Him center place by believing that He is the answer to every thing you need in life, and begin to walk in a new measure of His peace, joy, and liberty.
