Sometimes it takes forever for a project to come together. But when it does, and you get in that flow state, time does not exist. Which can be a good thing… but it can also mean things take a bit longer to finish. That was this bag. • The design went through a few different stages to get to this point, but I love how it turned out. And yeah, it took a bit longer to finish then I expected, but the end result was worth me being uncomfortable and feeling like I was letting someone down by not delivering “on time”. • I am having to get very comfortable with being uncomfortable with my work and the time it takes to finish things. I have never had a great relationship with my body. I have always been a bigger person. Taller and heavier then most of my friends growing up. Always had to wear the “husky” sized pants because nothing else would fit. • When I was 9, my mom was explaining “goals” to me and I remember saying “so a goal would be something like ‘I want to be 100 pounds by my birthday’.” I was then scolded because “we shouldn’t want to weight more”. • When I was 20 and in school in Savannah Ga, walking to classes everyday and eating well, I got down to 168 pounds. It was the smallest I’ve been in my whole adult life and still felt like I was too big. • I have big shoulders, big feet, big hands, and a big head (hats are pretty much a no-go for me). These are things I can’t change. Things I have to learn to accept about my body. • There are things about my body I love though… my feet are big, but they look nice and are fairly proportional. My hands are big, but they are steady and my fingers are nimble. I love my body art, my tattoos and piercings help to make me feel better in my skin. So, something cool just happen… I got 10k on tiktok! 😁😁 I’ve been on the app for about 3ish years now, but only posting semi-regularly for around 2. • I’ve documented most of my transition, the issues I’ve had with my parents not being accepting, some of the highest moment and the lowest, had a lot of fun, and met some really great people. I’ve shared my art, D&D stories, and funny interactions with my kid. But the most important thing I’ve gained, is love and acceptance. • I have been adopted by more moms then I can keep track of, gained more siblings, and family then I even could have dreamed. My 5 stages of of doing commissions: 1) “Yeah! I can do that!” 2) 🤔 How am I going to do that… 3) 😫 Why did I do this?!?! 4) 😬 I hope this works… 5) 😎 I’m amazing. I did it. • In all seriousness, I absolutely LOVE working with leather. I get to use SO many skills that I picked up throughout my life. The 15 years I’ve spent doing graphic design. The 24 years I’ve spent playing chess (puzzle solving, thinking many moves ahead, etc). The thousands of dollars I’ve spend on art school (#scaddropout), not to mention all of the art supplies from countless endeavors. My affinity for making something out of nothing, sculpting, and working with fine details. And just the general love of making art. • On the personal side, it has helped me make new friends, rekindle old friendships, and want to be generally more social. It has also helped me realize that what I make is worth something. That I am worth something. That my time and skills do not have to be monetized, but when they are, I do not have to be the cheapest and sell myself short. I have value. I have now been to more weddings in the past 6 months then any other year of my life. (The number of weddings is 2 now if you were wondering.) 😉 This was also the first time being to any kind of lgbtq wedding. The venue was beautiful. The brides were gorgeous. And I got to wear a dress again. 😁 • The main takeaway for me tonight, was seeing the love, support, acceptance, and genuine goodness from one of the bride’s parents. (I nearly cried twice at the reception watching them.) Not knowing that from my own family and only ever hearing about it, I had my doubts if it was even real. But seeing it tonight was incredibly beautiful.
